Amelia's is a production bakery that specializes in hearth baked bread in the Italian tradition. We bake fresh bread every morning for use in our restaurant Bluebeard and for sale at our retail store. After we bake our orders for the day we mix, divide, and then handshape each of our loaves and allow them to undergo a long, cool fermentation overnight in order to develop a depth of flavor unlike a commercially yeasted bread.

City Loaf is my favorite... toast it. Add butter and salt.
Little known fact... Amelia's has to-go sandwiches every day during the week.
ALSO... MUST TRY the Curry Chicken Salad in their refrigerator section. It sells quick so get it if you see it. You'll thank me later!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Jan 21, 2019Previous reviewGet that $2 double drizzle chocolate chip cookie or maybe that pretty peanut truffle biscuit!

I had been coming to Amelia's for years for their amazing breads and pastries. I don't live in the area so to come here was a real treat and no matter where I was in the city I made it a point to stop here at some point during my trip.
They almost lost me as a customer though, because this time last year I was there and they had a guy working who was just so over the top I was really astounded at how he was talking to people (I get it, this is a stressful time of year but damn! All of the people shopping that day were behaving so IDK what his deal was)
I hesitantly walked in to a shop about half full. The workers were busy packing up orders but everyone was in good spirits and were smiling, saying happy holidays to everyone - it was a much better atmosphere all around. I bought my bread and pastries and cheese and left with my wallet considerably lighter, but thankful my Indianapolis staple remains on my list! I dont know what I would do without you Amelia! Thanks for being so greatHelpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jason A.Indianapolis, IN373695Apr 13, 2024
How can you not like this place? The Pullman bread and sourdough are my favorites not cheap but they last a long time. Everything here is top notch, I don't consume a lot of bread but when I do I use Amelia's. Best in the city IMO, 2 thumbs up.

Finally visited this little after been wanting to go here for such a long time. Their bread is so good. You can buy the whole loaf or buy half, which I'm glad because their loafs are big. The young ladie that helped me was very nice and recommended the city loaf. I didnt really have to wait long before someone was asking me if i needed help very attentive with their customers. Their prices are great not overpriced at all. They have pastries and decided to try the raspberry, lemon curd Danish omg it was delicious and it was big. Parking wise I was lucky to find a spot out front, I'm not sure if there's other parking besides street parking. I can see it being a little difficult to visit here often if there's no parking but it was worth it. They have tables outside if u want to sit and enjoy your pastries. There a little coffee shop next door which is perfect to go with your pastrie.

This has become my favorite neighborhood market since moving to south side. Fresh local product from Full Hand Farms / Smoking Goose Meats / Fresh bread and pastries. The salad of the day and financiers are my fav. The service is... chill but nice. The space it quaint, smaller, and a little bright but you can find a good amount of basics.

My wife wanted a chocolate croissant after church, so l looked on here & Amelia's was the first one that was open. We got one of those, and a ham & cheese biscuit, cherry something & cinnamon croissant. The last one was the best one, we decided. I liked the cherry thing, the chocolate croissant was pretty good, as was the biscuit. Prices weren't too bad, either ($3-5ish).
Staff wasn't overly friendly, but not as bad as in actual Paris France, either, though.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - 35138486Jul 27, 2023
This is a little shop and bakery near Bluebeard on Virginia Avenue - one of three Amelia locations. Amelia supplies the bread used at the famous Bluebeard restaurant so we decided to try some of their baked goods that they offered.
It is a very small storefront with a select few baked goods available daily. I was definitely expecting a lot more options. They also offer a daily specialty bread (see picture).
The three of us split three cookies: an oatmeal pecan, a chocolate buckwheat, and a breakfast cookie. The chocolate and breakfast cookies were nothing special but the oatmeal pecan was fabulous! The texture definitely came through on that cookie and was the only one worth the $3 they charge for each cookie.
We did not buy any of the goods available off to the side as they were a bit pricey and we didn't see anything we needed. Overall, this is a good bakery with delicious bread and some pretty good baked goods. Give this location a try!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - May 23, 2023
Okay, I am literally obsessed. I have passed Amelia's so many times. I work in Fountain Square, but I used to work closer to Mass Ave, and I would pass their east side location all the time. I went to go grab a coffee from CF Coffee Shop during my teacher prep period, and since Amelia's is right next door, I decided to stop in and check it out.
First of all, I love bread so when I walked in and was met with the delicious scent of freshly baked bread, I was more than impressed. I walked around for a minute and saw that they serve as a small grocer for some more luxury and local items. They had local lettuces, a variety of deli meats, and pasta. However, my eyes were drawn immediately to the fresh bread and pastries at the counter. I was planning to grab a half loaf of bread to take home, but when I locked eyes with the French onion Danish, I knew it was coming with me.
I didn't even know savory danishes were a thing! However, now that I've had one...I think Amelia's is my new favorite pastry shop in Indianapolis. The Danish is perfectly cooked. Flaky on the outside and soft on the inside. The middle has cheese and is topped with herbs that make your mouth water, the middle is filled with caramelized onion. I can only imagine how delicious this could be dipped in hot soup. I think I need to reiterate how DELICIOUS this Danish is. I am completely sold on savory danishes, and when you try one, please make it from Amelia's!
The employee who rang me up was so friendly. He told me about their specialties and got me excited to try the French onion Danish. I am so glad I decided to stop by on a whim, and I cannot wait to go back soon! I think I will try a loaf of bread next time!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 53147433Nov 25, 2023Updated review
Everything is as delicious as always. Pastries are almost impossibly flaky. I love seeing all the layers after you've taken a bite.

Thanks for taking the time to write this kind, detailed review Cassandra! You have all the good tips about our sourdough. In case you didn't know, we also have daily rotating bread loaf specials if you wanted to try something a little different! My favorite is the Cacio e Pepe (available on Thursdays), made with polenta so its super soft, cheesy, and a bit peppery - so good for grilled cheese! Thanks for your support!
Feb 6, 2022Previous reviewIf you like sourdough, you'll love the bread here! All of their loaves have a sourdough base, and it's perfect for toasting. I let a work friend try it, and she described it as "How God intended toast to taste." I could not agree more! As a nice bonus, Amelia's will slice your bread for you. They also sell whole and half loaves. The half load is perfect for this single gal. If you're more in the mood for a sweet treat, I highly recommend the shortbread. It's pure buttery deliciousness!
