Hands down the best Mexican restaurant in the whole Newark area. Authentic and great pricing. The guacamole is thick but creamy!

I went to this place because of the 4 stars rating, however I am not fancy with the food, especially the flavor and taste.
For authentic Mexican food, the taste is bland, nothing social. Even the guacamole has no taste.
Will I go back again? No

I've been putting off writing this, but went there sometime last week. Not so much a "restaurant" as a deli feel inside. Seems like more of a takeout place. My problem was that the food just sucked. I had enchiladas and the whole plate of food was just completely tasteless. The rice was dry, beans watery. The enchiladas themselves consisted of poorly rolled tortillas with dry meat but the whole thing was drowned in a watery sauce, inside and out. There was just no flavor to anything. It sort of seemed like the whole meal came out of a can. I'm surprised there are so many good reviews; maybe a different dish, at a different time..? *shrug* Not every place can be a hit, and I would only eat here again if I was really starving, had no other options, and maybe was drunk.

This place is amazing from the food to the customer service. My friends and I really enjoyed the experience. I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for affordable authentic Mexican food. I will definitely be returning

Such great Mexican food! Their guac is one of the best that I have had !!! Such great portion sizes as well!!!

After reading Yelp reviews I decided to give this place a try. It was one of the few spots open when I arrived in town at 9:15.

I do not understand how this restaurant has such high ratings. While the chips & salsa were good, the burrito I got was absolutely disgusting! It was a huge portion (+ rice and beans) but the chicken was dry and the red sauce on it made me want to vomit. If you go here I would stick to the tacos.

Mediocre enchiladas, the sauce came straight from a jar, didn't taste authentic at all. Guac was on point though.

I had the steak burrito. I dont think it was very impressive. I should have gotten the tacos, but maybe next time.
The guacamole is very good, maybe just guac and chips and a taco would be a fine lunch.

Working at Newark Airport has certainly limited my lunch to leftovers and the occasional visit to the employee cafeteria. Even though I'm so close to Ironbound and downtown my 30 minute break, is often less than exciting.

Desperate, I was browsing one day on Yelp for lunch within a couple mile radius and stumbled upon Aguilas. I read through some of the reviews, and thought it would be worth a shot. A couple of coworkers and I got together and ordered (1) Al Pastor tacos, (1) Carne de Res tacos, (1) Chorizo tacos and (2) sides of Guacamole. There are 4 tacos per order, and even though they weren't overflowing with meat, it ended up being a sufficient serving. The downsize to ordering takeout was the tacos and filling weren't exactly piping hot and looked less fresh than it would have had we sat down at the restaurant to eat. The meats seemed kind of dry, but again since it was takeout I am giving them the benefit of the doubt. My favorite was the al pastor because it was the most flavorful and tender. I'm not a huge fan of spicy foods, so I wouldn't try either of the salsas that came with the tacos. When I dabbed my finger to taste, all I could determine was that the green salsa was HOT and the red salsa was EVEN HOTTER. Our guacamole was good and I ended up putting it in my tacos. The fresh chips (to accompany the salsas) were really really good.

Now that I've tried the basics and for the most part, enjoyed the meal, I want to go back and try some of the more traditional Mexican dishes like chicken tinga, sopes and enchiladas.

I have no idea how to eat Mole de Olla politely lol but I recommend it highly anyhow! At Agave this is a stew of tremendously long cooked meat on the bone with fresh corn, green beans and zucchini added at the last minute to a deeply flavorful broth, not very spicy despite the menu's promise. Served with lime wedges and half a dozen warm corn tortillas, a steal at $9.

They start you with free chips & salsa, clearly house made corn chips, largely unsalted, the sauce a pale orange with a nice dose of fresh cilantro but rather modest heat, good.

We enjoyed great service from our perfectly bilingual server, he answered questions about the food, these gringos didn't feel out of place at all :)

My dining companion got the enchilada platter, nicely grilled steak bits inside corn tortillas, all smothered in an interesting red chili sauce that was just a bit warm for her, mild for me. Arroz and frijoles on the side were very good too, yummy house made beans.

Vegetarian rating: 1 star, they're making no effort at all. Oh sure you can get guacamole & chips, a salad, maybe cheese quesadillas too.  Frustrating bcos it's so easy to do great veg Mexican dishes, not here tho.

Very good food, low prices & great service means I'm a fan despite the lack of margaritas not to mention the location, which is well off the beaten path.

I love this restaurant. The owners/staff are super friendly and the food is a knockout every time. I've ordered tacos al pastor - great. A soup I never remember the name of but it's got beef, string beans and corn in it (oh, it's Mole de Olla) - I dream about this soup sometimes. Someone else mentioned the guacamole and the green sauce. Yes, they're both fabulous.

Ok... I forgot to take a pic because I almost inhaled my tacos!!!! Authentic Mexican food. That's it, that's all you need!!! The service was good. It's a small, quaint neighborhood spot. The girl behind the counter seemed to be a student but she was super helpful and attentive. She offered up any info I needed to know to make my decision pretty easy. Steak and chicken tacos. The green sauce??? Just drink it! It's soooo good!!!! Definitely will be going back!

Great service, super clean, very friendly. We tried the most standard tacos: chicken, pork and beef. The chicken and beef were very good, the pork was a little meh. The red and green pepper sauces are awesome. Overall,  great service and price for simple, classic tacos.

So...i Went in to get a menu told the lady in front I would be back to order and she said ok left for less than 3 mins. Went back in and was told that they are closed it was 8:23 pm and the door clearly reads... closed at 9:00pm

stopped here on the way back to nyc. great service and great food at a reasonable price. chicken enchiladas were amazing!!

Had my food delivered to my hotel room several times and it was quite fast.  This time I had Taco al pastor (4 tacos per order) for 7 bucks. Chicken mole and hominy pork soup. Water bottle is a buck each, totally beats the hotel price.  Lol
Food is very authentic Mexican style.  They are fresh and tasty.  Besides the fact that the soup is a bit fatty for me, but I think that's how it's supposed to be, it still is a very flavorful dish.

You must try their guacamole!  It's amazing.  We ate here a few times (food is great!), then we bought kilos of guacamole to go for a party. Everyone loved it.  I am a regular at this place now. There's something about the food that draws me here rather than other Mexican restaurants in the neighborhood. maybe fresh ingredients? I don't know.

This is my go-to Mexican restaurant. I've been ordering from here at least once a week for the last two years and have never been disappointed. Whether in the mood for some tacos al pastor, a tinga chicken burrito, or my wife's absolute favorite, the grilled chicken torta, you can't go wrong. To top it off, it is a family run operation and they are the most down-to-earth people. They make it a joy to order and eat there.

I USED to love this place when they delivered to me. I am not too far, maybe 9 blocks or so, still in the Ironbound area... lately all I get is excuses, ranging from.. "oh sorry there is a festival and we can't reach you".. to todays excuse of "sorry we maxed out our deliveries for the day"
WHAT??!!!!
Sorry AGAVE, but crappy customer service is crappy customer service. A simple yes or no would have sufficed, no excuses needed.

Decent spanish resturants, alot more options than most spanish places and clean too. Very nicely priced
