The absolute best burnt miso I've ever had in my entire life! I'm going back to Japan in August and this place is a MUST!

My boyfriend and I found this place from our favorite YouTuber living in Japan: Paolo from Tokyo. We are so happy we took his word on it!
Food: I had the Special Kogashi Miso-men (burnt Miso Ramen) & my boyfriend had the Special Kogashi Shoyu-men (burnt Soy Sauce Ramen). Honestly, you can't go wrong with either of them. Both of the broths were delicious. I think the Miso Ramen is a little sweeter and the Soy Sauce was saltier, but in a good way. Water is served upon request and there is a refill jug on your table so you don't need to track down your server.
Service: Our server was nice & polite. You get a bib since the burnt ramen is black and can get on your clothes. There was no wait so we got seated immediately. Check was provided upon food arriving, so we were in and out of there in about 25 minutes. The host & server know some English, but I majority spoke to them in Japanese.
Location: This restaurant is off the Nishiki Market, and you may miss it since it's kind of hidden. We used Google Maps to find this place, but you won't regret it!
Overall, I would come here again if I am ever visiting the marketplace!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Jan 14, 2019
After walking through Nishiki near closing time- and not finding too many options ended up coming here. The weather was pretty bad so there weren't too many people around so we got seated quickly. The menu said their specialty was the burnt miso ramen. Why not?
The little appetizer was good, but very small. I couldn't tell from the looks of it but Kyoto Gogyo is an izakaya and there's a sitting fee- at least you get something and it's under 4 bucks USD so it's not too bad.
The ramen though, 'burnt' is probably a bit of a misnomer smoked, I think, is a better term for it and the smokey flavor with the grainy texture of miso was delicious! Rich, but not super heavy like pork based, not better or worse, just different. Worth a visitHelpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Jan 10, 2019
After checking out the Imperial Palace at night, we were ready for some late night eats. We settled on Kyoto Gogyo, which is known for their burnt ramen.
We dropped in on a Thursday evening (around 8:00pm) and there was a small queue. There's a sheet outside to jot your name and party size down. We only had to wait for about 5 minutes to get in.
The inside is the fanciest ramen place I've ever been to. In the front, there's seats at the ramen bar and then further in, there's tables (that fit about 20 people). They were playing top 40 music (all in English). Service was spotty but all the staff spoke excellent English. Make sure you ask for a ramen bib if you're wearing white/don't want to get wreck your clothes.
The menu is quite diverse with drinks (everyone seemed to be ordering beer), salad, cold starters, warm starters, fried dishes, hotpot, ramen, rice and dessert. Hotpot looked really good but we were here for the ramen. Four types of ramen (burnt shoyu, burnt miso, tonkotsu and shio). Note: there's two prices. The only difference is the ¥1,290 gets your more pieces of chashu compared to the ¥890 bowl.
The one irritating thing is that for dinner, there's a ¥400/person service charge! Rip off. All you get is a dinky little appetizer.
- 2x Service charge (¥400/person) - our appetizer was three small pork meatballs. Luckily, they were flavourful and tender with a touch of broth underneath but ¥400 is excessive for what you get.
- Kogashi miso-men (¥890) - burnt miso ramen with cabbage, fried onion, half a seasoned egg and scallions. The noodles are thin but seemed like a hybrid between a Chinese noodle (lo mein perhaps) and a Japanese ramen noodle. All I know is it matched well with the broth and had a good bite. The burnt broth was unique; creamy and intensely rich but never felt too heavy.
- Kogashi shoyu-men (¥890) - burnt shoyu ramen with the same ingredients. The broth was also good; I'd be hard pressed to pick one over the other. It was slightly less burnt.
The burnt ramen was completely different from all the other broths we've been eating. Worth a try but save yourself ¥400 per person and come at lunch. 3.5 stars.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Nicholas R.Central San Jose, San Jose, CA053Apr 11, 2023
Closed. Walked a lot to find the place. It's closed. I need more characters before I can post this review.

Excellent ramen place right next to nishiki market. The place was packed with locals so thats always a good sign. They have an english menu and the staff is super friendly. I got their signature burnt ramen and wife got the tonkatsu. Both were splendid. And the quantity was a lot! Should have ordered the petite portion!

Gogyo Ramen is famous for their burnt ramen in Kyoto. Basically, they scorch the broth at extremely high heat to burn the broth into a black colour. The broth tasted a bit smokey, but other than that the noodles and toppings were quite average. Overall still delicious, but not as mind blowing as I thought it would be. Probably a one-time thing for me, but definitely a very unique and creative idea.

Fancy ramen in a higher end restaurant but this just wasn't the place for me. The burnt miso-based ramen was really good, just super fatty/rich, salty and dare I say too burnt?, so it unfortunately got a bit one-note and tough to finish by the end. However, the fatty pork was one of the better ones I've eaten and kudos to the ambience of the place. Meanwhile, my husband got one of their regular ramen dishes, which he wasn't as impressed with. (He thought the chain Ippudo restaurant tastes better, but he's not Japanese so take that with a grain of salt :)
There was a line when we got here at 8pm on a Sunday, but it wasn't too bad of a wait. The restaurant itself is pretty spacious by Japan's standards with quite a few tables, although the wait for food after ordering is rather long. Service, as always, was exemplary.
They give you complimentary tofu in a little broth as an appetizer, which was tasty and started our meal well. We also ordered gyozas, which were ok, that came with the best spicy wasabi ever - a bit salty but totally something I kept going back for.
All in all, no regrets coming here since I got to try a different flavor of ramen. I just can't call it the best I've had.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Aug 29, 2017
Do not believe the hype.
Gyozo was not crispy.
The smoked broth is a nice gimmick, but unfortunately you can not order it spicy.
Shaved beef appetizer special was chewy and over cooked. Like cold thick sliced roast beef.
Great music, hipster vibe... pricy and forgettable.
Mediocre "from soup to.... (deez nuts)"Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - 18310735Apr 20, 2019
I came to know about this place in youtube travel channel. The special about this place is burnt miso ramen which is unique and delicious. The portion was generous and i loved they gave 1.5 eggs . For some reason if i have to compare this with my ramen experience in some New York places i dont think i missed much / the wow factor was missing. But overall its a good place and i do recommend this place. Will i go there one more time before i leave Kyoto ..na.
