Yelp's Life Of Pie

November 18
This Weekly Yelp brought to you by
Pumpkin pie made with
love at SusieCakes.

Sure, the holidays are about family, friends and celebration. But let's be honest – the best part about these winter months is the sudden proliferation of pie! Everywhere you turn, there's another opportunity to have a huge, satisfying slice to celebrate the season. And whether sweet or savory, yelpers clearly have no problem keeping their eyes on the pies.

Amandine Patisserie had Elizabeth F and family pumped last Thanksgiving thanks to their unique take on pumpkin pie – "a definite hit!" Meanwhile, Craig R gets a taste of maximum deliciousness in the miniature version from SusieCakes. He describes it as the best pumpkin pie he's ever tasted and goes on to say that "the filling was super creamy and light and had the perfect amount of spices. This pie was perfect." We sense a pie-eating contest coming on any second now!

A close contender for The Most Classic Holiday Pie is the much-loved pecan. Brooke W heads to Baby Blue's BBQ in Venice to get that warm and fuzzy feeling. "I love the pecan pie. It makes me feel like I'm at home and that's a good thing." Well, we all know there's no place like home! Amy W had quite the reaction when she checked out the mini pecan variety at Patisserie Chantilly in Lomita: "Seriously, I have died and gone to heaven. Okay, maybe just dessert heaven." Amen, sister!

With so many sugary choices out there, it's easy to forget the red-headed stepchild of the pie world: the savory slice. Leave it to the Brits at Tudor House to remind us of these gems. "What could be better than a tasty filling inside a flaky crust?" asks Diana G. Nothing? Likewise, the shepherd's pie at Rustic Canyon was a pleasant surprise for Matthew K. He thought "the butternut squash topping was stunningly delicious." But if you think the pie-as-entrée prize belongs solely to our cousins across the pond, Jody M insists you try the All-American classic chicken pot pie from Marmalade Café. "What else screams comfort food on a rainy Sunday afternoon than a warm, flaky, buttery, creamy, chunky chicken pot pie? It's crazy but ever since I had it, I can't wait for another opportunity to have it again!" That's not crazy, Jody. It's just the pie talking!

In 2006, we hiked down Wilshire. In 2007, it was Pico. And in 2008, we started at Sunset before walking the entire length of Santa Monica Blvd. This year, The Great Los Angeles Walk heads south and dives into the history of Los Angeles by hitting some ex-presidents: Washington and Adams Boulevards. On the way, we'll pass some of LA’s most beautiful historic places, like Ray Charles's old recording studio and the St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Roman Catholic church.

Join us and feel less guilty about gorging out at Thanksgiving. Email greatlawalk@mail.com to RSVP!

"This place is a sweet little spot right next to my gym and right on the Marina. Usually swing through after yoga and spinning to grab an evil concoction they created consisting of three shots of espresso, 3 scoops of protein powder, and chocolate that keeps me wired and feeling healthy for hours.…"

"Now, I know we aren't in NYC or Boston; but if you are looking to experience a little slice of history in our very own Los Angeles, a trip to the Apple Pan is in order.  If you have never been here, this is how it works.  You can park in the back, but there aren't too many spaces, so you may have to…"
