Bar Crudo

Update - 8/1/2010
A couple weeks late with another review. This visit i brought 8 new people (clients) who had never been to Bar Crudo before. Usually its just me, or me and my girlfriend so this was the first time i have ever come with a large party. This review will be the same as every other review i have written for Crudo, the food, service, atmosphere, and social dining style was perfect. Though every person who hadnt been there before looked at the menu with apprehension for what to order, everyone raved about their meals and all left with a sense of adventure and new story to tell about what they ate at Crudo.

If you have a small party, 8-10, call ahead and make arrangements, they will take care of you but the restaurant is small so they cant just "squeeze" you in. Thanks Tim, and everyone for amazing service and another amazing meal.  See you all soon...

Another fantastic meal.  This trip was a bit of a celebration for us and they helped me make it a special night. A few changes to the menu. More unique options. Look forward to visiting the new location next month.

2 times in a month i have eaten here, added to 50 times in my life.  this place is still my favorite of favorites on the planet.  Heard a rumor that they are moving which will suck because they wont be in my neighborhood anymore, but some food is worth traveling for, Crudo is no exception.

    See y'all soon.

I really enjoyed this place.  My first visit after walking past it 100 times.  Laid back environment, nice decor, a little on the trendy side, great food, very healthy, not probably for everyone (raw fish and such), but for me it was great.  People are also extremely nice.  Not a bargain price wise, but nothing like Nobu or similar.

Also, i travel a lot alone, and have a hard time finding places i feel comfortable eating solo.  Crudo has a cool counter-style seating area that i dig.

    Enjoy it raw...

The Alembic

This place really doesnt need any more 5 star reviews, but I am going to give it one, albeit 2 weeks after we went there. My girlfriend and i cabbed over to Alembic after a big group dinner at one of our favorites, Bar Crudo. It was based on a cocktail recommendation from a friend.

We were really taken back by the friendliness of this amazing neighborhood bar and our bartender was such a good guy, very enthusiastic about the menu and their vision for how they run the place. Soon he had us looking at the unique menu and wouldnt you know it, we ordered more food (one day i swear we are going to weigh 300#).

Anyway, we ended up ordering some small plates just to taste...beef tongue sliders, duck hearts, and of all things, bone marrow (which i can only describe as beef-butter). for two people who werent hungry, we ate all these rather exotic creations and loved them all.

What i love about Alembic and restaurant/cocktail bars of its kind is that more than not, the successful ones always have staff as passionate about where they work and what it stands for as the owners are. This isnt a trendy place, its a great place. Well worth a visit for ANYONE who is a laid back hipster, or someone looking to try something different in liquid or food form that you simply will not find anyplace else in san francisco or otherwise.

We will be back, soon.

Old Granite Street Eatery

I have been laggin on my reviews lately but after my girlfriend and i ate at Old Granite Street Eatery, i wanted to make a point to come on and give them a good review. As most of the other reviewers mention, it is nice to see establishments like this opening in downtown reno. This is the redevelopment i am always hoping for and will always support. Good concept, true to their direction, unique and interesting, and frankly, a good value so that we can come more than on special occasions.

We started with some small plates and then ended up ordering around the great cocktail and food menus. Pork belly, quiche, cheese plate, and a couple deserts along with a few of their classic cocktails were what we ordered. Everything we ate or drank was cooked and presented perfect. Service was attentive, casual and friendly. We left with zero complaints, and an excitement to come back very soon.

This new eatery has quickly risen to be one of, if not our top, restaurant in Reno. Excellent work guys...you have a couple new fans!

West Street Wine Bar

Id call west street wine bar and the entire west street market a real gem of reno. I visit the wine bar at least once a week either to get a break from the office and work a little, or to meet my girlfriend after work for a drink, and other times we visit in the later evenings for a place to relax.

It's small and cozy. modern and minimal. Graet people watching. Their wine selection is great and the owners are just awesome. Very helpful with making selections. It's always a nice mix of people. Food is all around you and you can bring it in.

I find it hard to say anything bad about this place. What they created is unique and I really enjoy it.

Had our first chance to stop into the new Bangkok location this saturday night. My girlfriend and I are always on the hunt for new late night places since we both often have to work late. When i heard Kris was opening a new place i was excited for him and was looking forward to seeing what it would look like.

So this review would be more for the late-night happy hour/lounge more than the restaurant. We got there around 11. the main restaurant was closed but the lounge was very comfortable and inviting. This is their first go round with the lounge/bar concept and it works. The decor is really beautiful and they did all the work themselves.  very nice attention to detail. Would be a great place for a small party. After 11p the apps are half price and they have a great selection of finger foods to sample. Exactly what you need at that hour. This night we had their meatballs, rangoon, and a bangkok beef plate.

Bartender is great and the service is excellent. We had their Bangkok Mojitos which are sake based and amazing. It was a great place to just relax, unwind, enjoy a quiet couples conversation, grab a bite of delicious food, and catch up with an old friend.

Not sure if everyone knows just how authentically Thai the owners of Bangkok restaurants are. These family run businesses were born in reno by way of Thailand. Kris, his mom, and many members of the family are in the restaurants every day. The recipes are all his family recipes. There is a certain charm and authenticity to businesses like this, and i encourage anyone to support these types of places. I have known kris for 30 years, literally, and i am so happy to see them doing so well.

Support the new location, for lunch dinner or late night. I dont know how you would be disappointed.

This is a cool place, been there forever, but strangely new to me. Had a nice lunch with an amazing view. Wet Woody of course is the signature cocktail here, but the food is good too.  No bargains to be had, but what a beautiful view. Service was great. Nice crowd.  Tahoe classy.

Cant wait to come back this summer and hang on the deck.  I think my crawl may be:  Sunnyside to Jakes to Gar Woods to Lone Eagle to The Lodge to Bed. (with a DD of course).   We'll give it our best...

Paragon Restaurant & Bar

I have eaten and "drunk" at paragon no less than 100 times over the years.  Since we are Giants season ticket holders, I visit this place before most every game (and after most as well).  Best mojitos, best bloody marys, great service and bartenders. Outdoor is fun if its nice.  Decor is beautiful, industrial modern.

The main menu is good, but i typically get light fare before or after an event.  As others have mentioned, the grilled cheese and tomato soup rule.  Burgers are good. Tartare is good.  its all good.  You cant go wrong.

if theres a giants game, then its sporting wear, if not, its nice casual.

Worth a shot if your are in SoMa near PacBell park.

Rouge et Blanc

I am a big fan of Rouge & Blanc and pretty much visit this bar every visit to SF (which means 15 or so times a year).  It is consistently good.  Nice wine list, a lovely and friendly staff who i feel thankful to have gotten to know over the years, good light app style food (primarily cheese plates and light social food).

The place is just north of union square in lower nob hill and is quite near my SF basecamp so thats why i visit.  You wont find WiFi and a cafe atmosphere...its about relaxing, and reflecting.  Thats what i do when i am there.  I have taken a couple photos over the years on the rare occasion i have camera equipment with me.  I loaded a couple shots to their page.  Its really a well designed place.

When i compare this to the crap service at Cafe Le Presse, i wonder how they are owned by the same people, but, they are.  Alas, i dont hold that against Rouge et Blanc.

I will be back soon...

Sezmu - CLOSED

Finally had an opportunity to enjoy Sezmu. I have wanted to go since it opened and just have never had the opportunity.  This weekend i was treated to a fantastic experience at this amazing neighborhood eatery.

Its casual, but you shouldnt show up in a t-shirt and flip flops.  Its nicer than that.  You will see many on special nights out dining with you so look the part.

This place borders on 5 star in my opinion. Its a beautiful place, excellent service and dinner/drink menus that have things on them that you have never seen prepared/combined anyplace else.

I had an Absinthe based drink called a Mojo that was amazing as were all of our drinks...all one of a kind.

dinner was amazing.  nice size portions. great course breaks.  The chefs tasting menu didnt suit my tastes this night but i have heard its phenominal.  Wine list is great.  Desert was great.  Plenty of options but not too much. fantastic atmosphere.  Just a great place.  Its off the beaten path so its primarily locals, but i am certain the proprietors would love to see gang all there.  anyway, I cant wait to go back and i would recommend it to anyone looking for a nice dinner and something a little different than the standard reno faire.

Enjoy!

A street cart gets 4 stars from me along with the many other fabulous restaurants i have eaten at.  I took a 6 block walk in 28 degree weather, just for the privilege of waiting in a 30person line to have a combo place with white sauce and hot sauce.  It is new york street dining at its finest. Never been anything but perfect.

I hope this guy retires a millionaire someday.  I'll be back in March for sure.
