Bhan Thai Restaurant

Category: Thai

4 star rating

Have I already mentioned that this whole Yelp thing is going to turn out real bad for my waistline?? I was sifting through reviews before lunch and stumbled upon this place. I've been disappointed by Thai food in the Springs many times before, so I my expectations were not incredibly high, but this time I was not let down! Bhan Thai was fast, friendly, very clean and a bargain! For around $6 I picked up a plate of loaded Pad Thai with Tofu (available with any protein you want, really though) and I was able to order this hot. So many pad thais are sickly sweet and quite a turn-off to me. Bhan Thai had extra spices available that you could customize your food with on your own as well, but I didn't need that because mine came out perfect.

Their menu is quite extensive as well, offering a wide selection of curries, thai salads, noodles, traditional appetizers and even some chinese dishes. I can't wait to return and try the curries. Yum!

Charcoalburger Drive In

Who knew I would find one of my favorite burger places ever in Glenwood? I was up here for an event and looking for a quick place to get lunch. I thought Yelp would be dead in this small town, but it did not let me down with Charcoalburger Drive-In. This is a drive-thru or order at the window type of place. Burgers are made to order and can be made in stacks from single to triple (and up, I would imagine). Beef, Buffalo and Elk are all available. I hear the Elk is fabulous, but since I was feeding a family of 4 and was trying to stay money-conscious, we all went with beef. Fantastic! I had mine with cheese, mayo, lettuce, tomato and smoke house sauce (a smokey bbq spread). Other upgrades were available like bacon, blue cheese, green chile and the like. Just delicious through and through! Onion rings were also pretty good. I almost stopped here a second time before leaving town, but figured I'd wait for another trip. Next time I'll be sure to try one of the milkshakes all you other yelpers were raving about.

The Shoppe

Nom-Nom-Nom. This place makes me so happy just thinking about it. You can't help but smile each time you walk in the door and see the crisp, fresh, white decor and hot pink accents. The whole menu is printed on the wall, and you can browse their dessert case to see the day's dessert selections. I can not leave The Shoppe without a Red Velvet cupcake. I try other cupcakes and they are deliciously good: Chocolate and Peanut Butter with the smoothest and richest frosting imaginable, or Strawberries and Champagne. Oreo Cookie with mint is also great, as is a classic chocolate and mocha. Their Red Velvet is just incredible though, with a nice big mound of delectable cream cheese frosting that I could eat by the spoon.

Another reviewer mentioned how they appreciated The Shoppe's mini cupcake selection for those times you don't want to have a whole big treat. I also appreciate this option because you can maximize your tasting palette by loading up on different, bite-sized flavors!

My husband is a huge fan of the cereal selections. You can mix up your own, or pick one of their suggestions, such as froot loops mixed with trix and fresh strawberries. All these are served up with a carafe of your choice of milk.

Flying W Chuckwagon Suppers & Winter Steakhouse

This old "dude ranch" is super hokey and has an unmistakably Super-Christian slant that doesn't always feel welcome to someone as secular as myself, but the food is so good that I can excuse all that. I've been here twice for homemade Chuckwagon dinners served on an aluminum tray: strip stake, a hot baked potato, bbq beans, chunky applesauce, melt in your mouth biscuits, addictive spice cake and some crazy-good cowboy coffee. You'll gobble all this down at picnic tables and benches while listening to a cowboy band calling themselves The Flying W Wranglers. Before and after your meal you can stroll around the ranch visiting stores and playing horseshoes. Dinner costs close to $30, but is a well-worth-it splurge.

Chopsticks Restaurant

5 star rating

First, I am just racking my brain, trying to figure out why the first reviewer gave this place 1 star. I almost want to make a few more yelp accounts and keep rating this place with 5 stars just to make up for what he did to Chopsticks' overall rating. That 1 star made me so crazy that I went through all his reviews to see if we just disagree on restaurants, but guess what? The places he likes in this town are places I like and we seem to share the same dislikes as well. And I share his opinions on Colorado Springs cuisine even! But I digress...

Peeps, when you want a good Chinese meal, go to Chopsticks. When you are tired of yet another crappy, stale Chinese buffet or combo restaurant that smells like grease, and every dish tastes strangely the same and equally terrible, making you consider giving up on the cuisine all together, go to Chopsticks to restore your faith. When you say to yourself, "Really? Is PF Changs really the only option for good Chinese food in the Springs? Really?!?" Go to Chopsticks. It is clean, friendly and so-so-so good. We had the classics here: a starter of some fantastic Hot & Sour soup followed by Kung Pao Chicken and Sesame Chicken. Both very good and the Sesame Chicken is just perfect. We left happy and planning what dishes we will try on our next visit.

Bambino's Italian Eatery & Sports Bar

Categories: Italian, Pizza

4 star rating
 Update - 10/29/2009
I ended up trying out Bambino's lunch buffet and need to hand out an extra star for them! Lunch is quite a deal with an endless variety of pizzas (the spinach alfredo pizza with roasted garlic is craving-inducing!), chicken wings in a couple flavors, a full salad bar with all the extras and multiple pasta dishes. All that is served up with a friendly waitstaff for a perfect lunch break. I'll be back for this one!

Bambino's is not bad, but not great. The waitstaff is real friendly and I loved the foccacia bread appetizer that was free with our meal. I also thought the salad bar was quite good. The prices were a little steep for the quality here. For good Italian food you can do better in the Springs (see my review of Rocco's, for example). I may try this place one more time for the pizza, so perhaps my rating will change, until then, we'll stick 3 stars. Decent, but you can find better.

Shuga's

Shuga's is decent - nice decor and pretty tasty sandwiches, but it is missing something. Went here for dinner, but left only partially satisfied and still a bit hungry. I think the idea is great, the building and location are perfect, but Shuga's needs to jazz up their menu to really wow me. I would stick with this place for drinks or an afternoon snack with friends for now.

La Baguette

5 star rating

So yummy - this place is a classic! Sandwiches on baguettes with grapes? Good. Fondue with bread and apples? Good. Beef Bourguignon? Good. Quiche and salad? Good. Tortellini? Also good. French Onion Soup? Absolutely perfect. I have never been disappointed with an order here and once even ate at La Baguette 3 days in a row because I just couldn't get enough of it. Just hits the spot every time.

My favorite part about coming here is dessert. I don't often order dessert at restaurants, but almost always order the creme caramel at La Baguette. Typically this is served right when you order and I eat it right then too - before I even get my meal because it is just that fantastic. (Excuse me, I may need a moment...)

Ai Sushi & Grill

Categories: Japanese, Sushi Bars

4 star rating

I'm giving this place 4 stars for great sushi, but if I could rate this place twice I would give it a 1 for hibachi - it is quite terrible. (Go to Musashi for hibachi!)

I've sat at the sushi bar a couple times though, and have not been disappointed. The sushi chefs are spunky and fun. Orders come with miso soup and a delicious seaweed salad that has a nice and chewy piece of octopus in it. This startled me at first, but it is very good! I've had many different rolls and nigiri here and was not disappointed. The fried tempura rolls are fantastic! Meals are finished off with a decorative orange and strawberry creation that is very refreshing.

As other reviewers mentioned, I too was a bit turned off by this place being in a suburban strip mall, but it really ended up being one of my favorite sushi places in the Springs.

Musashi Japanese Restaurant

Category: Japanese

5 star rating

This is THE place for hibachi. I have tried Benihana's, AI and others, but Musashi beats them all by a landslide for lunch or dinner. I usually order Musashi steak and scallops or steak and chicken and upgrade to fried rice. Musashi gives you a nice, warm bowl of miso and a simple salad dish with house ginger dressing for starters. I dream of their house ginger dressing - it is like no other and can make everything good. I could literally drink this stuff! Dinner will come with a small shrimp appetizer that is a real treat and the chefs will entertain you with knife and fire tricks while they cook your meat to order along with veggies and bean sprout sides. I love the mustard and ginger sauces with the meal as well. Every hibachi restaurant has the same elements, but Musashi just does each piece better. When I move from the Springs, this will be one of the places I will consider making a trip back for!
