Abigail Cafe and Wine Bar

Category: American (New)
Neighborhood: Prospect Heights

4 star rating
 10/29/2009
I'm so surprised by all the lousy reviews after the positively lovely end-of-a-date that Dude and I had at Abigail this evening.

Stopped by on the way home from the (highly recommended!) "Who Shot Rock?" show at the Brooklyn Museum, just because it happened to be next to our bus stop and we were kinda chilly. We agreed, even after only one visit, that it will become our go-to spot whenever we get to this part of town.

Particularly for a wine bar, both the service and menu were very unpretentious. The wine is reasonably priced and we got generous pours of a very tasty Malbec. The food menu selection is nothing groundbreaking, but it's not trying to be. What's important is that everything we tried was *really* tasty.

On Top Chef, they always say that you can tell a truly talented chef by their soups. Both of our soups--lentil chorizo and crimini mushroom artichoke--were delicious. The lentil was very flavorful and the lentils themselves were the right texture (not too mushy) but I have to say that the sausage, though tasty, was really not a properly spicy chorizo. [Wow, was that ever a run-on sentence!] The mushroom was so freakin good we were wiping up the bowl to the very last drop with the nice, chewy bread that was served on the side.

A surprising highlight were the house-cured olives, found on the small plates menu. A huge serving, they are prepared with orange and coriander and are absolutely bursting with flavor. The only disappointment was the penne a la vodka. The sauce was good, but the pasta itself seemed like it came out of a grocery store brand box.

To add the fourth star, the candlelit ambiance made for a romantic evening and both our server and the owner introduced themselves and were welcoming and friendly.

Newtown Creek Nature Walk

Category: Parks
Neighborhood: Greenpoint

Seriously, Greenpoint?! You know I love you baby, but who are you trying to kid? Even if I were blind I could tell that this is about 10 miles away from anything resembling a nature walk, because I could still smell the fetid stench emanating from the waste treatment plant which comprises most of the "view."

The walk begins with a tall concrete wall on one side and an asphalt manufacturer on the other. No nature yet. After several paces, it opens up to the waterfront. Ah, nature! Oh, wait. No. That's a polluted stream with a vista across the way of garbage barges, smokestacks, and a highway.

Moving on, I spotted some weedlike plants which are apparently local vegetation. Oooh, things are looking more naturey. Yes! Leaves! Brush! Sprouting miraculously right out of the concrete! Some of it is even green...but then, WHAM. It's over. The "nature walk" ends abruptly, smack dab in front of the aforementioned sewage treatment plant that smells like you're bobbing for apples in a big bucket of cow poop.

Oh, Greenpoint. I like you for what you are, pollution and all. Please don't ever try to go all "lipstick on a pig" on me again.

I usually have to head to downtown Brooklyn for something relatively unpleasant, like jury duty, so I look forward to visiting a place like Clark's that welcomes its customers with open arms.

Clark's is a warm, friendly diner with a pleasant lunchtime buzz, a waitstaff that doesn't hurry you along, huge portions, and food that actually seems lovingly home-cooked.

I wouldn't come to this area just for Clark's, but I sure am glad it's there when I do.

Dear Champion Barista,

I get it. You're hip. You're earthy. You and your single dreadlock don't bow down to the man.

But really, IS TAKING A SHOWER SO BAD? You're serving food, for goodness sake.

Yours,
Ex-customer

PS Way to go on the chocolate mint cookie, though!

Everything from the moment we were warmly greeted at the door was just sooooo good.

As I've posted before, I take my responsibility of restaurant-choosing very seriously, so when friends from Boston, San Francisco, and Chicago were all in town simultaneously, I relied on you, dear Yelpers, to help me make the call. All I can say is THANK YOU!!!!

Our server, Philip, was so cool and full of useful recommendations that we wanted him to just sit down and join us for dinner. He made the fantastic suggestion that we choose a made-to-order chef's tasting service (not listed on the menu.) All we had to do was let him know our preferences and what we'd like to spend and he and the chef would put together a selection that allowed everybody to try everything. They even made special courses for the vegetarian in our party.

We started with cocktails, and though not  included in the tasting menu, we all shared anyway. Each one seemed better than the last! I loved my fresh and summery Yuzu Ranbotan martini (also recommended by Philip) and a pleasant surprise was the "milkshake" made of some kind of alcohol, soymilk and toasted sesame seeds. It sounds kind of weird, but it was a frothy, almost marzipan-flavored delight. I also have to mention the truly special shochus, brewed there in the restaurant. People in our group loved the grapefruit but I was a big fan of the strawberry, which had been apparently distilling for four years!

The tasting menu created for us was absolutely out of this world and we had more than enough to eat. The plates ranged from more traditional Japanese dishes like stir fried taro root; to Euro-influenced bites like hot, gooey, delicious, fried sushi-rice-risotto balls; to unique flavors like a tofu salad with basil-infused tomatoes. As others have written, the "bombs" were really the bomb. I still can't even believe how delicious these bites of sushi were. Just perfectly textured, very fresh, not overwhelmed by rice, and complimented with tiny dallops of other flavors like wasabi cream.

I've never been to Japan, but I did live in San Francisco which I believe contains the largest Japanese community in the U.S. and I've eaten Japanese in many of the world's renowned "food towns." I say without hesitation that this is the best Japanese meal I've ever had.

 Update - 8/3/2009
Just wanted to update and say that I received a lovely note back from Juliette's manager offering her apology and another chance to visit the restaurant on the house. I thought this was a very nice gesture, and I'll let you know what happens if we take them up on it.

I am so sad to give this neighborhood restaurant only 2 stars, but in reading the letter that I just wrote to their manager, you'll see why I did it...

    Dear Nancy,

As you know, my girlfriends and I recently had a wonderful experience throwing a bridal shower at Juliette. It was because of this, and as an excuse to use your lovely rooftop bar, that my husband and I decided to throw our birthday party there last night.

Unfortunately, we had quite the opposite experience last night. There were several instances throughout the night when my guests and I were made to feel uncomfortable and at times downright unwelcome.

When we arrived, we only had six in our party rather than the 15 that we had made the reservation for. (The rest were due to come throughout the evening.)  We therefore asked to sit at a much prettier location in the middle of the roof rather than next to the service station where the 15-person table had been located. The roof hostess made it clear that this was highly inconvenient for her, though I am still unsure why.

Although we were reminded FOUR times throughout the evening what a large exception had been made for us to reserve a table for 15 in the first place, that series of tables next to the service station remained empty all night.  This is also true of the round table at the end of the tables we did end up sitting in. Although the roof hostess refused to let us use that round table even when our party began to expand, it also remained empty. In fact, when we did expand, the entire party was asked to move back to the 15-person table. All the tables that we were asked to vacate also remained empty for the duration of the evening.

When it began to rain, we moved downstairs. A new arrival at the party was rudely refused service at the bar until our upstairs checks had been paid (which they already had.) When my brother approached the downstairs manager to let him know that we had already paid upstairs and to request that our party be allowed to order drinks, he was AGAIN reminded of the exception that had been made for us to make a large reservation. Allow me to remind you that there were plenty of open tables both upstairs and downstairs all evening long.

At 11 PM we were handed the bills, and told that, though you normally let guests linger past midnight, there were only two tables in use at the restaurant at that time and you therefore would be closing at 12 sharp.  Basically, we were being told one hour before closing that we should prepare to leave.

These are only a few examples of how we were made to feel like our relatively small and unobtrusive party was a huge imposition for your staff.  Ultimately, we had 25 guests come and go throughout the night. I am very sorry to say that the way we were treated made 25 Brooklynites and potential long-term customers feel alienated and unwelcome.

The one bright spot was our two female servers, who handled shifting tables, shifting guests, and multiple checks with grace and friendliness.

I want you to know that I have never written a letter like this before, but I enjoyed working with you on the bridal shower and I thought it was very important for you to know about this circumstance so that it can be avoided in the future.

    Thanks for listening,
    Liz

I've found myself making excuses to go to this godforsaken part of town to grab some mac & cheese from Supermac on the way home. My favorite is the  B & G, or what I like to call the "Bad Jew"--Bacon & Gorgonzola. Delishhhh.

Aureole

When I saw that Aureole was being featured on Yelp today by one of my favorite shows, Top Chef, I just had to add my five stars to the pile. I believe that their exec chef (not Charlie Palmer, but the dude who actually runs the kitchen here) is going to appear on TC Masters starting in a couple days.

So let me just start out by saying that any restaurant where dessert alone has three courses is allright by me. I mean, really, dessert had its own amuse bouche (a cherry tapioca pudding shooter) and was followed by a plate of delectable homemade bon-bons and beignets! These are all in addition to the main event, which was a beautifully-presented chocolate-banana tart with salted caramel ice cream. Are you kidding?! Life's short....review dessert first.

After much research, dude and I chose dinner at Aureole for celebrating our fifth wedding anniversary. The date fell on their final night in this location and, despite that fact, the staff was as patient and lovely as could be. We were treated like one would hope to be treated on a special occasion.

We went for the 5-course chef's tasting menu (one course for every year...) and it was a smashing success. Sometimes in tasting menus the dishes are hit or miss--some good, some not so good. In this case, each course was a hit. Seriously, every dish was gorgeous, with well-balanced textures and outrageously delicious flavors. Our heads were almost exploding by the time we got to the aforementioned dessert!

If you're doing the prix-fixe where you can choose dishes, I echo the others on here in recommending the scallop "sandwich." It was exquisite.

All the little touches really put my review over the top--great wine recommendations, wonderful olive batard rolls and other fresh breads, an amuse bouche before both savory and sweet courses, and the little, sweetly wrapped  pound cake that was presented on our way out "for tomorrow."

I look forward to saving up enough cash to visit the new location, maybe for the 10th anniversary!
