Five Guys Burgers and Fries

3.0 star rating

I value this particular location for the dog friendly patio area that is right next to this Five Guys, but the food is too disappointing and I consider 3 stars to be a generous rating.  I would come back ONLY if I had someone wanting to eat a lot of peanuts (yes I have people like that in my family) and needed a place to bring the dogs.

Despite my strong negatives about this place, they are almost nullified by the location being in a very dog friendly shopping center.  There is a large dog friendly patio right next to this Five Guys location and my rating is greatly boosted by the fact that I can bring my dogs here when people from out of town want a burger, noodles, or any other food they can sell you to go and we can all eat what we want at one of these patios, with the dogs.  That may be unfair to prop up a restaurant because of a feature that they aren't mainly responsible for, but I will go the extra mile for a good dog friendly patio, especially out here in Redlands where there aren't very many.  I really am a sucker for the peanuts and some of my family members would greatly value this feature.  Unlike Gladstone's though, you can't just deposit your shells on the floor, but that's a small concession.  The cleanliness of the place is good.  Parking is ubiquitous.

I've been inside Five Guys while exploring the east coast, way before they came to CA and I remember thinking that it's nothing special and not even worthy of spending any money there.  My impressions were only validated tonight.  Their burger is not worthy of mention with other top tier fast food chain burgers.  However, it's not the worst either, so I rate it 2 stars.  Their rendition of a veggie burger is a travesty, especially here next to the vegetarian friendly city of Loma Linda.  It is basically the same as a regular burger WITHOUT a beef patty or any patty of any kind.  You're just paying for bun, lettuce, tomato, pickle, and cheese.  That had me laughing out loud to think that I would pay for something like that.  This location definitely has to work out the kinks from opening recently.  Even though we only ordered 1 burger and fries to go, 2 parties of people who ordered more than us and after us, received their orders before we received ours.  I saw people who couldn't follow the directions to the line to order and simply approached the counter to order and surprisingly, the cashiers took them ahead of everyone else! I guess people are too nice out here to say something.

I'd come back, but only under my predetermined set of conditions.

Price: about $8-$10 per person with burger, fries, soda, and tax.
Food: Burgers are 1 to 2 stars, the peanuts are 4 stars, and the location is 5 stars.
Service: Mediorcre
Ambiance: Good
Location: Fabulous

Update - 7/18/2011 2 photos 1 Check-in Here
So we came back to check it out again and I'm happy to say now that people are aware of this dog park's existence and it has had a little time to mature, it's a pretty neat park.  Although the quality is of course not brand new anymore, it seems that the powers that be take good care of this park so that it has retained some quality.  I'd recommend a visit, but it's not large enough nor does it get enough traffic to make a special trip.

The large space is pretty good for a small dog side and the grass on both sides is present for the most part.  It has been dug at and is bald in certain sections on both sides, but I give it a pass overall.  The complete lack of shade is somewhat remedied with the trees growing up just a little bit and now there are strategic places where you and your pups can get some shade.  The layout of each dog park is like a shoebox, long and narrow.  I don't know whether to cite it as a pro or a con, but I tend to like it.  Plastic bags are provided with trash cans just outside the fences.  It's close enough that you can still deposit your bag there, but it's a smart move to keep the trash cans off the grass where it won't be a target for dogs to pee on, allows the grass to stay greener since water can now get to it, and keeps the smell farther away from the park.  There are plastic chairs provided.  You are supposed to return them stacked on the cement when you're done using them, however it doesn't seem anyone cares to do that.  Overall, great care and notice is given to try to keep the grass as prosperous as possible and I was happy to see that there wasn't any unclaimed poop the entire hour we were here, nor were there any strong smells coming from this park as typically occurs at dog parks with grass.

Most of the negatives now seem to be present or not present depending on what time you come.  You might have a hard time finding other dogs for your dog to play with.  On this past Saturday around 2 PM, we waiting about 20 minutes before some other dogs showed up.  We only waited that long bc we were meeting a friend here before we continued onto the dog beach, otherwise we would've left.  Once people did show up, there were probably about 10 dogs, so it was a nice turn out and our dogs got a good chance to socialize.  That bumped up the rating a bit.    But if no one had come, it would've been a problem.  Parking is now the biggest negative here as there is a nice parking lot, but it is dominated on the weekends by families, soccer games, etc.  You can probably still find a space because of the turn over, but you might have to walk about 5+ minutes if you are unlucky.  Shade could be better, but hopefully it'll improve.

Overall I'm a fan and since it's close to where I live, it's a nice asset to have.

This is a new park opened in late 2007.  I only use it for the dog park and will just stick to reviewing that.

Overall, the dog park is fairly pathetic.  Not the kind of pathetic that usually befalls dog parks where they stink, are not well kept up, too much dog volume, bad dog/owner personalities, etc.  Those characteristics are non-existent here, mostly because it's brand new.  Maybe it just hasn't grown into itself yet and needs more time, but the 30 minutes we spent there seemed like forever.  I couldn't wait to leave and experience the many other superior dog areas SD has to offer.  I'll probably come back because it's so close to my home.  Don't make the special trip to come here, it's just not worth it - not yet at least.

There are separate areas for large and small dogs.  I think there is a separate water fountain on each side.  There is a single double-gated entrance that is placed in between the large and small sides.  There are lots of poop bags provided.  The park is clean, doesn't smell, and you won't have any problem avoiding stray poop left on the ground.  Location is very good with a freeway entrance close by, UTC mall, local eateries, etc. a short drive away.  Parking is ample.

You would think that since this is a very new dog park that it would be flush with great amenities since it can just copy and then build what has worked at every other dog park.  You would think...  The dog park is located at the south east corner of the park, the most difficult part of the park to get to and farthest away from the residential areas.  While this may seem like a good idea bc of noise, it makes it a 10 minute uphill walk from the closest residence to here because the park is huge!  I have a home right next to the park and I feel idiotic having to drive there because my Scottie would tire himself en route to the dog park!  Each side has lots of dried grass that looks like it needs more water and makes the place kind of dreary looking dead grass color.  There are several baby trees planted, but they don't provide any shade - one of those things that maybe needs to grow in more.  Because of that, it gets unbearably hot for your dog and you.  There is also no place to sit!  There is a single stone bench in the double gated entrance!  Who the hell thought of that?  Maybe they're planning on adding more seating?  While the small dog side is a decent size, the big dog size is only marginally bigger, which is fairly ridiculous.  Not that it matter much because there are never many dogs here!  There were two owners and two other dogs the weekend we went there.  One owner was super chatty about himself and his mastiff, and the other owner was a bit withdrawn from people and her lab.  All our dogs wanted to do was hide in the one small spot of shade  from a greeting sign on the fence.  Again maybe the volume will increase when people realize there's a dog park here.  It was sad.  I only stayed and waited half an hour hoping others would show up.  No one did and we high tailed it over to the Del Mar dog beach where we had an awesome time.

Awesome dog park that recently opened.  Lots of grass and clean benches, but no shade. Highly recommended!

Been coming here a few times since we moved here and it definitely fulfills our expectations with the exception of the aforementioned lack of shade.  Because the park is very new, the grass is immaculate as is the rest of the location. People here are very friendly and on their best behavior.  I usually don't like to bring my smaller dogs to the big dog side however the times we have been here, the dogs have seemed friendly and well exercised so I don't mind.  All the standard amenities are present.  Big and small dog sides with their own separate double gate entry system, water fountains on concrete pedestal so dogs won't get muddy, and the ambience here is very pleasant.    Poop bags are provided for pick up.  Location is mostly a good thing with lots of grass space around to walk your dog before or after.

I've been to a few dog parks after they recently open and they're all very nice, but after a year things take a big downturn and they are not well maintained to accommodate the traffic.  Particularly parks with grass, they degrade quickly.  Already you can see (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) evidence by the water fountain on the big dog side that it is been dug at and water has created a nice muddy area that is perfect for your dog to dirty themselves up appropriately.  Only time will tell.  The lack of shade is probably the most glaring aspect as it is commonly very warm here in Redlands and even on temperate days, it is difficult to stay here more than 20 minutes.  There is a fundraising project to raise enough funds to build a shade structure, but I think it will take a while to procure since by my calculations, the amount they are needing is a pretty high amount.  The park is also difficult to find, but once you do you won't forget.  Enter off of highland just east of Roosevelt Rd and you will see signs directing you.   Parking, while abundant is a dirt lot which makes it easy to get dirty walking to and from the park both for you and your dog.

Still it is very pleasant here and I would certainly recommend a visit if you're a local or in the area.

Best place for burgers in a casual gastropub atmosphere around here.  Definitely 4 stars when considering the area.  If you have high standards, I can see it being a 3 or even a 2 if you're going strictly by food.

You don't really need my review do you?  I've eaten here almost half a dozen times in the last 2 months, so I can be pretty confident about my thoughts.  For me, the best feature is the dog friendly patio out front where tables can be rearranged to fit anywhere from 2 to12+ people.  The patio is also adequately separated from the parking lot too which adds a degree of privacy for us people with dogs banished to the outdoors.  Ceiling suspended heaters I believe too keep it comfortable sitting outside in the cooler seasons.  Tables are a little close together, so big dogs would be problematic, but my smaller dogs are quite comfortable here in the shade.  This is probably the first place I think of when I want to go out to eat with the dogs and definitely the first when I have a guest from out of town.  Their gastropub feel with a slight leaning towards sports is right up my alley and I think a welcome addition to the usual blahness that permeates suburbia in general.  I like to get the cowboy burger with veggie patty and bacon on the side for the dogs.  Gorilla fries are a usual order for me and their onion rings are very good.  The tv's at the bar and in the dining area make this a great place to watch the game.  Beer selection looks Good.  Location is great as it's close to some other modern eating establishments and a bit of activity on Orange. Parking can be tough at times, but they have an overflow lot just east of the main lot that usually is open.

This is one of those place where I was on the 5 star train at first and it finally has settled down to a 4 star mark because I've noticed some less than stellar aspects after the novelty wears off.  The food is unfortunately the most disappointing thing here ironically. It's really just OK to meh.  The burgers are of course the standout, but they're only a strong OK at best.  Having sampled a bajillion gourmet burgers (25 degrees, father's office, Shake Shack, O Burger, counter, etc), the burgers here are nowhere near the best I've ever had and are sometimes even disappointing.  Being forced to be a vegetarian 90% of the time, I make sure to treat myself to meat I really love when I have to stave off protein deficiency and the burgers here don't make me salivate.  When I come here it is not difficult to pass by the meat items and I guess that's what's most disappointing about Eureka.  Normally wouldn't be a big deal, but with a place with "burger" in the name and me with an unfulfilled love affair for meat, I would expect more.  Their veggie patty is also pretty meh to not good.  I don't think there is a Very Good veggie patty out there that's healthy, but for all the veggie patties I've had, Eureka is on the lower end.  Service also is hit or miss.  The first couple of times, service takes a long time and drink refills are not readily available.  Since they have the drink station practically in the dining area, they should just allow people to help themselves.  However the last few times I've been it's been pretty good, so I think they're on the uptick with me.  But I don't expect good service when I come here.  I would really love to see a tv out on the patio, so I could enjoy the game while outside.

Overall, I'd say I'd recommend a visit and would say i'm a fan.  However, I think Eureka does take a little too much advantage of the area in that there is little competition pushing them to do better.

Farmer Boys Restaurant

I like this place!  No it's not great food and no it's not fancy, but the friendly service, decently cheap prices, actual breakfast entrees (ie omeletes WITH hash browns and toast instead of only a lame breakfast sandwich/burrito) served all day, variety of the menu, open most days until 10PM, and best of all for me - a dog friendly patio covered area (when it's not too hot) make this a keeper in my book.  Recommended.

Just checked out Farmer Boys last night bc it was July 4th and everything was closed around 9PM, even more so than usual.  Decided this was a perfect opportunity to try a chain restaurant since all the local eateries are closed.  Donna helped us and upon hearing it was our first time there gave us a rousing welcome and even started telling us about the good points of living in Loma Linda.  So nice!  Just confirms my guess that people out here are nicer than in LA.  Ordered a veggie sandwich and was content with that for dinner, but after looking over a to go menu and realizing they had breakfast entree items, I was sold and added that onto my order to eat for dinner and save the veggie sammie for lunch the next day.  Overall I'd say the atmosphere here is like Coco's but in a to go set up.  Decor is about the same as Coco's or other like restaurants, clean and cheery.  Lots of great booths fit for the 'big boys'.  Food was wrapped up for us, although not as fast as I would've thought and took the food home.  I noticed their dog friendly patio covered area and it had 3 or 4 concrete rounded bench and table sets set up.  Looking at it from the street, I wonder if it's too exposed for me to enjoy sitting there, but getting a closer look at it, I think it's be a nice option to have, again, if it's not too hot.  I also noticed they had lights underneath the patio cover so you could eat in the early evening with comfort and they also have electrical outlets that you can connect any electrical devices too as well.  I don't think they have wifi though...  My omelet with hash browns and rye toast  wasn't great, but it was good enough for me and cost less than $6.  Veggie Sandwich was also good and less thatn $3.50.  IMHO the prices are definitely NOT "outrageous."  Value is in the eye of the beholder, I suppose.  They have ample parking in the lot, although we came at 9PM on a national holiday, so if the businesses that are located in the same parking lot are working, I wonder if the lot gets crowded.  Drive thru window is a nice feature too.  I'm eager to try their burger next time.

I didn't see anything negative worth commenting about.  If you're expecting nicer fare than bargain coffee shop food, you'll of course be disappointed.  The location is close by to me, so I put a bit more value on this place than someone driving here.  It's not worth a special trip in my opinion, unless it's late at night and you want want something different than the jack in  the box kind of crowd.

I can see most people rating this 3 stars since it's nothing special, but I liked it quite a bit and can see it filling a niche in my dining out agenda.  Especially because of the dog friendly patio area and all day breakfast entrees I'm happy giving this place a solid 4 stars.

Price: Less than $6 for just about everything
Food: OK to Good
Service: Great
Ambiance: Good
Location: Good pending parking space availability during the workday, but is parking ever a problem out here?

Mu

7/4/2011 4 Check-ins Here
A great option in Redlands.  I would highly recommend, however this is only my first time and I'm a firm believer in trying places 2-3 times before making a final judgement.

Moved here recently from West LA and it's hard to find good places to go that provide the kind of dining experience that we're used to.  Making it even tougher for us is that we have two small dogs and like to take them out to eat with us.  Dinner spots are especially difficult.  A fancy type restaurant like Mu with table cloths?  We normally wouldn't even bother asking, but we were hard up to find a place to eat dinner at night with the dogs.  Called Mu and they said they would be happy to take us and they have heaters!  Even though it was in the mid to low 60's we headed out on a Saturday night to have a night out.

Like other reviewers mention, the decor is very nice.  Modern and attractive inside with a nice outdoor patio area in front of the restaurant that is shielded from the sidewalk.  This is a great dog friendly patio regardless of whatever city it's in!  It was graduation week, so just about every table inside was filled, but we were here for the outdoors.  They have maybe half a dozen tables outside and each table can accommodate 2-4 people.  They moved a floor standing heater right by our table.  We brought moderately heavy jackets with us, but we didn't need them bc the heater was adequate, even for my "gets cold too easily" wife.

Ordered a bounty of food for only the 2 of us.  Among the dishes I can remember, green curry (OK), a vegetarian dish with mock chicken they made for us when I asked what else they could prepare for not meat (Very Good), Hamachi Sashimi (I know, at a Thai restaurant?! I usually hate restaurants that encompass more than one nation of Asia, but it was actually Good!), Spring Rolls (OK, a little too PF Chang-y for my taste), a fried rice dish (OK) and a couple other dishes I am having trouble remembering.  Not a bad one in the bunch.  One of the most awesome things is that inside at the host station they have a few small dishes of different candies.  Among them were skittles and my fave Andes chocolate mints!  The kind that you used to find on hotel pillows.  I'm a sucker for these mints.  I think I was put in a real good mood by these and I actually raided these bowls while I waited my 5 minutes to be greeted.  Maybe that's done intentionally and the candies are to greet you.  I'm perfectly fine with that!  Getting back to the dogs, they were warmly greeted and I didn't feel at all like a less than average citizen for having dogs in tow.  They even brought out a take out container of water for them.  Parking is abundant with street parking or they have a private lot in the back.

There was a group of about 6 women who were dismayed they couldn't get seated inside (graduation week), so they braved the outdoors with us, but there were not enough patio heaters to serve them and they complained the entire time of how cold it was as only 2-3 people at their table were feeling the effects of our heater.  So be prepared if you're braving the outdoors.  The price of our meal wasn't cheap, and standard for what we're used to paying in West LA for dinner.  I'd say we got slightly more food for our money than in WLA, but considering we're out in Redlands now, it's pricey by comparison.  Service was indeed hit or miss like other reviewers mentioned.  I did have to stand at the host station for about 5 minutes before somebody helped me (yay candy!).  A taller woman with long hair with a take charge personality that indicated she may be the manager and/or owner was incredibly helpful and gracious.  The busboy that lit our candle, moved the heater, and moved the tables for others that couldn't get seating indoors was also very helpful.  We had a bevy of servers bringing food to us and 2/3 of them were very indifferent, just bringing the food to the table with nary a word.  But they all did their job and I was happy with everything and overall I felt that I was an appreciated customer in these tough economic times.

I usually wait until after my 2nd or 3rd time to review a restaurant I like as they commonly will fall a star or two after I go back and aren't consistent or the novelty wears off.  But with Mu, I feel that it offers a great dog friendly patio, good service, and very good food that I wanted to get my thoughts down right away.  Most importantly, we had a great time and will definitely be back.

Frank's Wholesale Meat

3.0 star rating
6/10/2011 1 Check-in Here
If I was to judge from my experience so far, I'd rate them 2 stars, but as it's my first time here, I'm giving Frank's the benefit of the doubt by giving them 3 stars.  I do see some potential if they had more of the items that I wanted in stock, but I'll update if I don't see that improving.

Came on a Tuesday just to check it out and see what kinds of premium meats they had.  They did have some interesting meat selection as you'd expect.  I noticed rabbit for sale for something like $6+ a pound.  They will cook any meats you purchase for an additional charge.  I was also curious when I saw a sign advertising their dog food with beef, pork, chicken, and rice for $2 a pound raw or a little more cooked.  Thought that was a pretty good price in case you don't want to make your own food for your dogs.  Their food service looked like a good find and I would be interested in coming back to try that since they had a pretty good menu for BBQ items.  They also have a good selection of beers and other drinks which must be nice when you come to enjoy lunch here.  Service was efficient and polite.  Parking is ample in their private lot.

Problem was they were out of stock of most of things I wanted and there was no solid ETA for goods.  I asked if they had any bones for the dogs.  "Nope. maybe next week."  I asked if they had any of the dog food available for purchase. "Nope, maybe next week."  The "no" I can handle.  "Maybe?!" Am I supposed to call back every time before I come to see what your supply is like?  The rabbit I bought was frozen solid.  I don't know if maybe that's the only way you can get rabbit, but I was expecting a fresh carcass being a "wholesale meat" establishment.  Especially for $6+ per pound.  The atmosphere resembles a fairly dark cave once you walk inside.  Not the most inviting.  The darkness also makes it hard to tell how fresh their meats are as you have to squint to make out everything.  I was seriously pulling out my cell phone LED flash to use as a flashlight.  Most of their meat displays are empty or sparsely stocked.  I found that pretty surprising that they weren't filled up like you'd see at any other grocery meat department.  I had to wait around perhaps 10 minutes before I could find anyone to help me.  I called back the week after to find out if they had any of the items I wanter. "Nope, maybe next week."  Their kitch-y decor is a love it or hate it proposition.  Their food service area looks like it's supposed to be a raucous sports bar of some sort without the big tv or other things you might expect.

Overall, I'm on the fence about Frank's, but will give them a couple more chances before I settle on a final rating.

Dib's Safe & Lock Service

I've had Dib's out a couple times in the last month and they're fast, reliable, and professional.  I'd recommend.

My third 5 star review on a service today.  I'm feeling generous.  I got a recommendation for Dib's from my trusty go to lock provider Bundy Lock and Safe in WLA.  Because I respect Bundy's so much I went with this company even though there were no Yelp reviews.  True to their word, Dib's has fulfilled my expectations.

First visit was to rekey 4 kwikset deadbolt and doorknobs on a home we purchased. cost was $117.  Second time was to cut off a couple of locks that the selling realtor didn't have keys to as well as help me punch a hold through my front door for a new door fixture I was installing.  I forgot my drill in WLA and didn't want to go to HD to rent one.  Cost was $80 and they came out the same day within an hour of calling.

Like Bundy's they're not cheap, but I'd rather have someone reliable and pay them more to do it right and quickly too.  If I ever have lock needs, I'm going back for sure.

Trojan Carpet Care

Found Yohance from a referral from an LA carpet cleaner and cross referenced with yelp.  I was pleased with his service and ability to be flexible with my schedule.  The results were OK in general, but I was less than impressed.  I would recommend Yohance for his personable demeanor and great service, but will probably try another service next time and see if it's any better.

We just moved to Loma Linda and purchased a house that was in need of some serious cleaning. None of my LA contacts wanted to come out this far but did have a recommendation.  Even though he was a little west of us, Yohance was readily available and I liked how his website was informative and he had a flexible schedule to come clean the heavily stained carpets.  I told him that I was having housecleaners out the same day I was scheduling him to come out and he suggested I have the cleaners start at the farthest back of the house and then work towards the door since that's what he said his process was going to be.

Day of, Yohance was on time and very friendly.  He had the whole place done in about 4 hours and he admitted it was one of the dirtiest carpets he had ever cleaned.  Price was $350 for a 2400 sqft house although less than half the house is carpeted. At the time, I thought it was an OK price, but afterwards I saw the living social deal and had some buyers' remorse.  I guess I can't fault Yohance for that.  I enjoyed dealing with Yohance and his polite and attentive demeanor.

Before - http://www.yelp.com/bi...

After (the line is where I had a chair mat and was how clean the carpet looked right after cleaning) - http://www.yelp.com/bi...

My only issue is with the results being somewhat lackluster.  The cleanliness of the carpets in general seemed Good, but less than I expected since some of the heaviest stains seemed unfazed by his cleaner.  Perhaps I expect too much?   A few weeks later after cleaning, I happened to take some regular Lysol all purpose cleaner that you find at any store and found that even the heaviest stains that stood up to Yohance, lightened up considerably and some even disappeared after a few go arounds.  I wouldn't expect a regular cleaner to get out stains that a professional can't get out.  I am also noticing that after I vacuum the carpets even 2 months later, I get this chalky looking residue in my vacuum that I didn't notice before the cleaning.  It must be left over from the cleaning.  You can't see it, but when I go to empty my canister vac, it's there and a lot of it.  I wonder what other chemicals are still trapped in the carpet?

I think for most carpet cleaning jobs, the level of clean afterwards would suffice and generally I would recommend.  But if you have carpets incredibly stained as mine were, you might be left wanting.  Overall I was happy using Yohance this time around, but I will be looking to compare his results with someone else the next time around.

Pleased with Raul's service on two different occasions now.  I would recommend to anyone.

First time I called Raul, I needed him to snake an exterior drain for me as well as check several sinks throughout a house I purchased and was a mess inside.  Raul was very accommodating to my schedule and came out promptly.  He was able to clear the drain from roots that had gotten into it as well as cleared some bathroom sinks and tubs that were not draining well. The price to clear the outside drain was $100 and the price to fix the leak under the kitchen sink was $65.  I asked him to test out all the other bathrooms and see if they were draining well.  He cleared those as well, but charged me $65 each drain for what I think was a typical snake.  I wasn't too happy about that, but think it balanced out the price of the other repairs being reasonable.  Price was $350.

Second time he came out was to increase water pressure in my home since we were noticing it was really low like in the 40's. I was going to do it myself, but since I don't have a pressure meter on hand and to save me the trouble of shopping for one, I just had him out to do it.  He came out within 30 minutes of my call and was able to educate me on the range water pressure should be in (50-80) and why setting it at 80 might be bad bc it would be more wear and tear on the pipes and I'd be at risk for leaks in the walls.  So we settled on 70.  Showers are much better now. Price was $75.

Overall I'm happy with the service, however I'm used to paying a lot less for service bills.  I would definitely make sure to ask how much for each repair bc my bathroom sinks while slow draining could've been unclogged by using some draino.  Raul isn't very cheap, but I'm pleased with his professionalism and results.
