Frank Theatres Towne Stadium 16

Are you going to Atlantic City? Nothing to do? Obviously the many casinos, shows, food opportunities, and beach aren't enough so you want to catch a movie! This is one of the closest theaters, let me tell you now. For an IMAX price, I'd rather come to Frank's for their matinee prices of around $7. I literally came here 2-3 times in one week.

You'll find that the theater staff, much like the area, is slow, but informative. The theater is empty or filled with young children, for lack of checking ID, or azn families who don't know how to silence their phones. I'd like to say my movie experiences were ruined but, for the low ticket prices, not really.

Three stars for what you pay for.

It should always be tea time. I'd like to emulate the Brits and bring this tradition here, where fast LA life begs for a midday self-check with crumpets and tea on this quieter street of central Santa Monica. You shall find me here every once in a while, idly chatting with a lady friend among families, tourists, and other ladies.

Peek the menu while walking by the door. I enjoy the tea for two specials that include one pot of tea and a set of crumpets. If your appetite is a bit more demanding, there are bigger and more options for your group as well. I like their sandwich, salad, dessert, and tea pairings but am perfectly content with just a pot of their house, rose, peach, or any tea and a freshly baked crumpet with delightful cream and jelly.

If ever I were to arrange a relaxing get together of some sort, I'd love for it to be at the Tudor House! I know I am already yearning to go back.

The Water Show

Despair not! When all else fails, the Water Show at Caesar's Pier is completely entertaining for the young and old. Walk a bit, then you will arrive at the shops. Continue straight ahead, where you will see the average fountain that transforms into jumping, dancing, water? It's amazing and I didn't think it would be. I recommend watching the show from the 3rd level, when it gets dark (no sun shadows), and with a snack, like an ice cream cone, while the show makes you feel like you are 5 years old again when little things amuse you.

I pass by Big Mama's and Papa's all the time and thanks to a Groupon Now promotion, an opportunity finally presented itself to force me to try this place. While placing my order, and enjoying my wait on Ventura Blvd., I had time to gather my thoughts, that went something like:

"OMG it smells so good. Ooo what is that on the menu, "khachapouri??" Hey, that's like my name! An egg pizza, wut?! Ooo you can park across the street and walk over. Wow, the man at the counter was so nice. Why's it so empty in here but the phones are ringing off the hook? Oh, here they come. Jeez there's also a Yelp check-in offer? I'm hungry!"

So, there you have it. My large pizza of pepperoni and proscuito was free, and I received a complimentary 2-liter soda too. I admit that I had a slice in the car before driving home and it was so delicious. I'm thinking I'll need to come back!

Bar Pintxo

Fat Tuesday 2012 for me was all about the West Side and lavishly indulging in drinks and little meals everywhere. Of course, we stumbled onto this little restaurant called Bar Pintxo. As we walked by and noticed the unique menu, plus the fact that they had happy hour, we knew we had to stop in.

My first impression was that this place really exemplified the Spanish lifestyle. I've never been to Spain but I knew I felt transported out of Los Angeles, with the slow pace, warm moods, and of course the tapas. Unlike some other people, my naivete and the fact that I was never spoiled with real Spanish living allowed me to take it all in for the very first time.

So, we started with a round of White Sangria, for $4 each. The fruits were fresh, and wine crisp, slightly sweetened by the wine-marinated garnishes. We took our time on that underneath the heat lamps and with our outside seats in front of the ocean.

Next, we ordered the "6 of $6" Tapas plate choosing 2 of each:
-Chorizo Bilbao, Cherry Tomato
-Huevos Rellenos con Vinagreta Vasca
-Crimini Mushroom, Mushroom Mousse, Manchego

The items were so unique! Although definitely not filling, they were made very well, for a first timer like myself and inspired me to try other tapas places.

My only disclaimer, which falls with the slow pace of Bar Pintxo, is that we did wait quite a very long time to order a second round of actual dinner and drinks, yet felt neglected. So by the time someone did come by to check on us, we had already Yelped new places to visit. I wish I could have tried the Paella, or more tapas, and more drinks. Hopefully we win the "Facebook photo contest," which would allow for another visit and a second chance. Regardless, I am indeed a fan of the place and I am glad we stopped in for a visit.

BJ's Restaurant & Brewhouse

Got nothing to do on a Saturday night in Oxnard? Come to BJ's! You will discover that the whole city has dinner here on the weekend, then moves over a few tables in the bar for drinks after. This is definitely the most popping establishment around here. Maybe it was a town hall meeting? Regardless, BJ's never fails. Drinks are drinks but I appreciate their great small bites and appetizer prices. Plus, who knew they had a full bar?! I'm only on wine at the moment but for your varied group of friends, that's always a good thing.

It's too bad it smells like cow outside.

..a breakfast nook that's only open until 2pm?! Genius! Why are these so widespread in the LBC and so few and far in the Valley? I sigh.

After a crazy ladies night out, in which case I mean me and some random old ladies since I lost my group of friends, and waking up at noon, The Coffee Cup was a necessary task that just had to be done. We just had to wait for half an hour to try this place with good reviews and that takes cash only!

To be honest, everything was good. Once we were in, we got hit with coffee, waitress, food, check, check!

While I had the Chorizo and Eggs (I think this is my current go-to craving), my friend had the very popular Breakfast Club Combo for $5.50. Hot waiter helping us out, endless refills of multiple coffee flavors, and our wide selection of french toast, sourdough, potatoes, eggs & chorizo, fresh fruit array, etc. we were so happy! We were so happy.

What a great afternoon this was, as we reminisced during our walk back to Ocean Blvd. I could really imagine myself living here.

So on a last note: if you come around 1:30, or before closing, the wait tremendously decreases and if you do happen to wait, there are self-serve coffee mugs for you to go grab yourself a cup while you chat outside.  I highly recommend you come to The Coffee Cup Cafe for an amazing breakfast!

Leap Year At The Lab Elite Event

So, Anthony started petting my hair. That was fun. How do people know I like that? I almost forgot this was an event review and not "things that make me happy." I really liked this event! It was "close," which is really the same distance as West LA to my house in the Valley, but felt way more local, so that was nice. I also used this as an experience to introduce to a non-Yelper. I hope I will be able to turn another one of them!

I know The Lab definitely appreciated the exposure from the party, but maybe not since the outdoor area was full of locals enjoying a quiet dinner by the fire.

Thanks to Leap Year At the Lab, I will definitely come back, and bring my group of friends with me!!

P.S. I am definitely going to use my super cool Yelp CA glass to spread the Yelp word!

Anchos Southwest Grill & Bar

You must try this place! They have fresh tortillas made right in front of you, which arrive piping hot and fluffy. Is there another reason?

From super friendly service as you enter, from the manager no less, to throughout your mean, and as you exit, Anchos just yelps for a pleasant time. As I looked around, I saw a wide variety of families, couples, young and old, and visitors all enjoying an evening with great food.

If you do decide to try this place, and if you happen to be in Riverside--because that's where we all go during our weekends--I'd recommend that someone at your table get the fajitas. Burritos are huge, satisfying, and great, but I want you to have the experience of a sizzling hot fajita dish in front of you as you indulge on those with the fresh tortillas. If you get some tacos, be sure to finish them quickly as they won't keep in quite the same condition as they came in. I think we all just agreed on trying some delicious steak or chicken, or what have you, fajitas.

How about their salsa? Really spicy! We definitely enjoyed those pre and post meal.

I can't think of a reason why I'd take off a point for this place. It's just the right amount of authentic to keep me coming back!

Kathmandu Kitchen

Indian slash Himalayan food? Sure, why not! Who knew Davis was so multi-cultural?

Let's start off and be straightforward. I am going to tell you that I think it it is best if you skip the restaurant and go to Kathmandu's booth at the farmer's market. I did not do this. I paid the price, literally. The market is on Saturday or Wednesday.

If you do want to do the whole sit-down experience, which is more than welcome, you  should get the buffet option for $9. All the menu items are laid out for your choosing and you can sample much more than one dish. I would recommend this alternative route.

Me? I chose neither paths. I ordered the safe Chicken Tikka Masala, which was moderately portioned, a side of white rice, and added on a side of buttery, fluffy, naan. The food was very delicious and if I could eat more, I should have gone for the buffet. Regardless, I was pleased.

The atmosphere is good and nice, as it should be, with quiet and unobtrusive servers. If you don't know what to talk about, there are quite amusing music videos on the televisions for your comments.

Whether you attend their formal location on G Street, or hit up their Farmer's Market food booth, be sure to give Kathmandu a try one day you feel like having something different to eat!
