Both the food and the service at Steak Frites were amazing, and paired with the lively decor and ambiance, this place is a win.
Our waiter (and the other staff) knew we needed something almost before we did. They were extremely polite and very helpful. Beyond the service, the food was absolutely delicious--the salad dressings, the wines, and of course the main dishes were all exquisite. We did not have time for dessert, which was a shame. We will hopefully come back again to try some!
Taking into account other's reviews, it seems there is a wide margin of error for this place. I imagine the service quality is not very consistent, but the food was downright fantastic. If you are in the Union Square area, I highly suggest giving Steak Frites a chance--you might just be delighted. --ap
We went here for lunch on a Thursday, and I must say it was a constant battle between poor service and great food.
They have some great lunch specials all for around seven dollars, including soup AND salad. You can pick the meat and spiciness for any of the specials, giving you a lot of options to work with. Everyone enjoyed their dishes, and I think we all felt pretty satisfied to be leaving out the door at less than ten bucks a person. I was very happy with the pork green curry fried rice dish I got.
Unfortunately, there were several service issues. The restaurant was far from busy, and yet it seemed to take a while for them to take our orders. I didn't receive a place setting until most of the rest of my group had virtually finished their soup. One of the us found a piece of Styrofoam in the salad, so that was bad. Finally, two out of the seven of us got our food about five minutes later than the rest of the group.
The food here was fresh and enjoyable, and the service was friendly and fast. The selection of meats to grill is great, too. Starting at three starts, this would bring their rating up to four stars.
Unfortunately, the price for the dinner buffet was much more than I had anticipated, bringing their rating down a star. Lunch prices are around fourteen dollars per person (plus drinks and tax and tip), but dinner is around twenty-six dollars per person. I would have been comfortable with paying around fifteen or sixteen dollars for dinner at Palace BBQ. Their current prices are simply too high for the style of food being served (especially considering it's mostly self-service).
I will probably go back to Palace BBQ for lunch, but never again for dinner. -- ap
