Zen's Sushi and Gourmet Asian Cuisine

The food is still really good, although the noodles tend to be on the greasy side.  The service is still horrendous, so we only get food to go now.

This place opened around Christmas, and it shows... they still haven't worked out all the kinks.  The front of the house is A MESS.  We stood at the hostess stand for 5 minutes before one of the 4 (YES 4) people on the floor noticed us.  They sat us down-- without menus.  After about 5 minutes I started looking around for some help, and the waiter came over, pointed at me, and said "I'll be right with you," clearly not noticing we didn't have menus, because he came over pen and pad in hand and asked us what we wanted.  I just stared at him and then he realized we didn't have menus.  My husband was ready to walk out at about minute 8, and by this time we were at minute 11, but the menu is extensive so it kept his interest.  This place calls itself Asian Bistro-- and they have Thai, Japanese, and Chinese food.  I was a little scared of the sushi since I'd never been there, so we ordered crab corn soup, pad thai and beef with assorted vegetables.  The corn soup was really good, especially considering it was only 4.95, which was enough to feed 2 people, and it had REAL crab in it!  The the shrimp in the pad thai were perfectly cooked-- juicy and plump and there were quite a few of them for 8.95.  The beef was also very tender and the vegetables were crisp and fresh.  In my opinion they should fire the busboy who was totally clueless (he sat us without menus, and refilled my iced tea by taking it back to the station and then returning-- with no ice cubes in the iced tea... and I just pictured his grubby hands all over the glass).  There seemed to be a manager type person there but they were hiding in the back with the servers fidling with the computer system.  Our server was pretty nice and appologetic, but he had two tables and only checked on us twice.  It seemed like everyone needed more training.

Anyway, the food was GREAT, and hopefully they work out the service kinks.  I might try the sushi next time.  Bottom line, the food is 4 star for the price, but the service was horrendous so they lost 2 stars.

I had the balsamic fig mascarpone ice cream with snickerdoodle cookies.  It was AMAZING.  However, the ice cream borders on too sweet.  I think the balsamic balanced the sweetness well.  But I took a sample of the bacon ice cream, and it was WAY too sweet.  Overall, I was absolutely thrilled when it pulled up in front of my office building in Pasadena yesterday! They also serve it with an edible rice paper wrapper.  It was... well... edible.  I just took a nibble to try.  Interesting concept though... especially with the Dr. Phil advertising!  I can't wait to try the red velvet ice cream next time...

My husband and I always get the same things here, large lengua and carne asada tacos with the homemade corn tortillas.  The tortillas tend to fall apart by the time you have eaten half the taco, but they are soooo tasty.  Yeah, it takes a while for them to make your food BECAUSE IT IS MADE TO ORDER PEOPLE.  I usually call ahead and have my hubby pick up the tacos to go, alleviating the waiting problem.  And the breakfast burrito (served all day) is really good, although I always tell them to hold the sausage.

WOW. This place is so good I would actually take my dad there.  (He is Italian, so won't eat French food unless it is perfect).  We got the savory tarte with peaches and it was the BEST thing I have tasted in I can't remember when.  And the pork chop was moist and delicious-- which is not easy to do.  Dessert was just good, not extraordinary, and they were out of a few things.    My only real complaint is with the front of house-- the bartender ignored us and was clearly overwhelmed with the overly complicated drinks.  And if the place is that busy, why is there only one person running the bar?? Although when I finally DID get my drink it was delicious.  It had one ginormous ice cube in it and some bourbon-- that's all I remember.  We had to have a reservation on a Wednesday, and we still had to wait  for like 20 minutes which was annoying.  However, I will be back because that was some of the best dang food I have ever had.

Kyla did the hair for my wedding, and Nicole did the makeup.  They were super awesome, and did a great job.  My makeup barely needed any retouching and my hair stayed nice even through all my dancing.  I was also very happy with the pricing.  My wedding was perfect, and I couldn't have done it wihout Paper Scissors Rock! I wish I lived a little closer!
