I grew up with dimsum and this is the trendiest I've seen a dimsum place!  Authentic food with a modern flair - I like it.  We came at 11:30am on a Sunday and our wait wasn't that bad, about 25 minutes.  The service was great and the food was good.  The portions are larger than normal... as in plumper, bigger, and juicier shumai and hargao.  Unfortunately, the prices are higher too... but that's expected now that they've taken up residence at The Spectrum.

Happy to see the influx of Asian food in Irvine lately!

Finally, a Chinese Hot Pot place!!!  Not to be confused with Shabu Shabu.  Yes, both require you to cook things in boiling water and offer dipping sauces, but the similarities stop there.  Having grown up, living and breathing Chinese Hot Pot... I could not believe how bland Shabu Shabu was the first time I ate it.  Hot Pot has so much more variety and flavor (imo)!

Each individual here places their own order and gets their own little pot.  Boiling Point offers a 7 different pre-assembled hot pots to choose from with varying ingredients depending on what you order.  Then you can add additional ingredients to your existing pot.  I didn't really find this necessary because I was plenty full from just what was in my pot!

I usually order the #1 (House Special) because it has three of my favorites in there - stinky tofu, pigs blood, and intestines!  Ok... I get that that's probably not for everyone.  :P  By the way, if you're not used to Chinese spices (like my husband) make sure you say "no spice" when they ask "how spicy".  My husband asked for "mild" and there was still a small kick to it.  The no spice will taste just as good because it's just straight up chicken broth, which will get additional flavor from all the other ingredients in the pot.  Plus, the dipping sauces here are delish so you'll get plenty of flavor from that too!

I've found the service fast and accommodating the few times I've been here, so I really have no complaints about this place.

Their menu is constantly changing based on the ingredients of the season and whatever inspires them creatively.  Come once, come often.  The space itself is really hip - if you've been to Father's Office... it's kind of like that, but not as dark.  Everything is made of wood, with chalkboards on the wall, and beer on tap.  They have some seats flanking the walls, and several long tables in the center, making the place feel homey and communal.  Say hi to your neighbor!

My girlfriend and I ordered a ton of things between the two of us.  Everything we ordered was delicious and spot on.  I won't go into the details of each dish because some might not even be here the next time!  Just know that you won't be disappointed with anything here - we sure weren't.

In the middle of dinner Chef Jason Quinn (of Lime Truck fame) made an appearance and greeted us.  He spoke passionately about his food and his vision for this restaurant.  It's obvious the food here is made with a lot of love and inspiration.

Whoa, super easy and super fast!  I was required to do a smog check for my DMV renewal, so I searched my trusty yelp and it did not fail.  I called Super Smog to see if I could come in right away.  Danny told me to come in 30 minutes, so I did - on the dot.  True to his word, he performed the smog check on my car immediately and I was in and out of there in 10 minutes.  He did not try to upsell me anything.

It's $50 flat if you pay by cash or check.  It's $53 if you pay by visa/mastercard.

It was really easy communicating with Kim over the phone.  She was friendly and personable.  On the day I scheduled my cleaning, two women came promptly at 9am and was ready to work.

My house was completely empty because we had moved, but we needed the old place cleaned before putting it on the market.  They spent 5 hours cleaning a 3 bedroom 2.5 bath detached home.  For the most part everything looked great, but there were a few minor things here and there that they missed.  I'd hire them again because overall they did a great job without any supervision.  Of course I have no way of telling if they could have worked faster or more efficiently because I wasn't there supervising at all.  I just came in the beginning and came towards the end.

You can pay by cash, check, or credit card.  When I hired them they charged $60/hour. Show owner comment »

Curry House CoCo Ichibanya

I first fell in love with Coco Ichibanya when I ate at one of their locations in Hawaii.  Having the option of Kimchi in curry was a revelation... so of course I was excited to try this place!

The menu looks different from what I remember and they don't have unique items like Curry Udon.  The portion size also seems smaller here.  I remember my eyes turning into giant gumballs at the amount of kimchi they topped on my curry in the Hawaii location.  Alas, it was not the case here.

How to order:
-  You can either choose from one of their "set" curry options and add on... OR...
-  You can follow steps 1-4 on their menu:
1)  Choose curry mildness level
2)  Choose amount of rice
3)  Choose spicyness level (not sure how this is different from #1)
4)  Choose what you want in your curry

By the way, if you want to increase the heat in your curry, expect to shell out some extra cha-ching!

They also price everything you add into your curry.  So if you want egg it's $0.80, if you want kimchi it's $2, etc.  The prices add up quickly if you're not careful.  My husband's curry cost us nearly $12!!  That's too much to spend on curry roux I could've bought in the store.

I prefer Curry House.  Here's why...
1)  Curry House's curry is thicker.  Too watery here.
2)  Curry House offers a brown rice option.
3)  Curry House does not charge for spiciness level.
4)  Curry House offers Curry Sets.  I love having a bit of curry, some side salad, fried shrimp, and corn potage for less than $10.
5)  Curry House's pickled radish 100x better.

I'm sticking with my tried and true Curry House which is just down the street from me.  Not coming back to this chaotic plaza just for this place.

I can't believe I forgot to write a review about this place!  I blame it on mommy brain.  We loved every minute we were here.  My only regret is that it took me so long to try this place even though I've had it bookmarked for years.

We came on a weekday, so no wait.  Their service was unbelievable and it made our whole dining experience so memorable.  Our server started off by asking us our names, and he remembered them throughout the entire night.  I don't think I've ever been to a restaurant that did that!  Sometimes the experience is in the details...

The food is phenomenal.  Definitely the best Italian food I've had in The OC.  We started with the fried calamari and caprese salad.  For entrees we ordered the Sorrento Pasta with Pink sauce and Cioppino with Linguine.  Everything was really fresh and the pasta was cooked perfectly al dente.  They even made a free mini pasta with red sauce for my 11-month old baby to munch on.  This is definitely a very baby/kid-friendly restaurant.  In the women's bathroom, there's even a cute little changing station set up with wipes and other accessories all set up for us mommies.

We are definitely coming back.  They made a lasting first impression on us and we will never forget how at home we felt dining here.

Update - 12/24/2011 1 Check-in Here
After last night's dining experience, absolutely 5 stars.  I guess I haven't been back in about awhile because when we asked if Duck Fat Fries were on the menu, they said those haven't been in the menu for two years!  Time flies.  Oops.  With that said, I should mention that this place changes their menu all the time so don't come in with your heart set on any one thing!  However, every single thing we ordered on their menu last night was delicious.

They accidentally brought out the wrong flatbread so they gave us that one for free and brought out the correct one.  The charcuterie plate was one of the best I've ever had... that chicken pate thing - I'm still dreaming about it.  It comes with freshly sliced baguettes and when we requested more bread they gladly obliged without a blink.

One of their specials - the wild boar mac 'n cheese with truffle oil - was the shining star of the night.  The beef cheek tacos, butternut squash and wild boar raviolo, skirt steak with Mediterranean hash and everything else we ordered was rich, decadent, and heavenly.  I wanted to savor every bite.

No complaints about this place!  Great ambiance, top-notch service, unique food, quality ingredients.  Lola Gaspar is definitely one of my favorite restaurants in the OC!!  Just wish we saved room for dessert.  My friend, Arnold W., keeps raving about their vanilla gelato ice cream with sea salt and espresso.

Finally made my way over here after having this place bookmarked for ages!  The ambiance is dark and romantic, but casual at the same time.  Whether you've just had a long, tiring workday or you're looking for a romantic night out, Lola Gaspar has what you're looking for.  Well, unless you're looking for Authentic Spanish food that is.  Having lived abroad in Spain for a summer, nothing about the food here is Spanish unless you consider the fact that they're served on "small plates".  This food is more reminiscent of Mexico than it is of Spain.

Duck Confit Fries ($9): fresh cut fries topped with spicy duck meat + salsa verde + crema + queso.  Don't be too eager to eat this like I was, or you'll risk burning your tongue!  This is a huge "small plate" and the fries come out piping hot.  I liked the texture of the fries, they tasted fresh and were nice and crispy.  This is just my preference, but I still like my fries with good ol' ketchup.  4 stars.

Spanish Chorizo Flatbread ($10): smoked mozzarella + chorizo bilbao + italian stewed tomatoes + goat cheese.  Liked the big chunks of sausage, but the flatbread itself got pretty soggy.  There was a lot of flavor here, but don't get it if you don't like oregano because there's a strong herb taste to it!  4 stars.

Carne Asada Street Tacos ($7): comes with three 4-inch tacos and the tacos cannot be mixed and matched.  These tacos were soo good!!  The beef is seasoned so well and the flavors really pop in your mouth.  Don't forget to add all the sauces that come on the side.  5 stars.

Seasoned Chicken Street Tacos ($7): still pretty good, but definitely not as good as the Carne Asada tacos, and not worth the $7.  3 stars.

Overall, an adorable place in the heart of Santa Ana.  Check it out.

Their food is seasonal and changes 52 weeks of the year, hence the name.  The concept is elegant food with all dishes being 475 calories or less.  Great concept!

For entrees, we ordered the caramelized sea scallops, cedar plank roasted salmon, grilled lamb t-bone chops, and filet mignon.  My favorite was the sea scallops.  Everything else was more overdone than we requested.  The flavors weren't as developed or complex as I would've liked in any of the dishes, but it was pretty good for being "healthy".  I love that they cook according to the seasons and respect the land.

The best part of our meal was the desserts.  They had this special "pumpkin pie" type dessert for fall and I loved it.  They bring you a try of all their mini portioned desserts and you pick and choose the ones you want.  Because the portions are small, you don't feel guilty ordering multiple and trying a bite of each.  No waste either!

If our server was more attentive I might've given this place 4 stars, but I was not impressed.  The best way to describe him would be "flat".  He told us the specials, came to check up on us once in awhile, but there was really nothing out of the ordinary about the service.  At a more upscale, fine dining type restaurant you tend to expect things like that.

Tustin Ranch Tire & Auto Center

Categories: Tires, Smog Check Stations

It would've taken Costco 4-5 business days to get the tires I needed to their warehouse, but with the holidays coming up and an un-patchable hole on my tire, there was no way I could wait that long.  We walked across the lot to Tustin Ranch Tire and they quoted us cheaper tires that would fit my car.  The service was okay and the turnaround time they quoted of an hour was fast.  We also asked for an oil change while they were at it.

They never called to tell me when my car was ready, so I ended up coming in a few hours later only to find that they completely forgot to do my oil change.  Since I picked up my car towards the end of the day I just drove it off the lot and decided to do the oil change elsewhere.  More of an annoyance and hassle than anything else.
