Big fan of this place and can't wait to go back.

Great, homey decor. Good service and a well-paced meal.

Between two people, we shared three small places and one large and it was TONS of food. It came out to about $30 a person, which was a great deal for the quality of food and how many dishes we were able to sample.

The standout dish was the wild mushroom toast - it's HUGE and tasty without being greasy. Loved it! Try it for brunch or dinner.

We also had the pumpkin risotto, pickled beets, and the salmon (large plate). All were delicious. The salmon dish in particular is the ideal winter meal - hearty with flavorful, nicely cooked fish on top of greens and a delicious mash of parsnip with a touch of horseradish.

Bead porn. Sweet, sweet bead porn.

Don't let the name confuse you: this place sells Czech glass beads - lots of 'em - at reasonable prices. (They also sell a small number of non-Czech beads, findings and finished jewelry, but it's all about the beads.)

The beads are displayed attractively, with little step stools for the ones higher-up. Pretty much any shape, size, color and finish you could ever want is here.

Bonus: this is a family-run business that has been in the same location since 1924.

Closed on weekends.

Granted, I'm biased because this was the place where I had my keys made when I first moved to NYC, but it's served me well for the endless home improvement projects I've undertaken since then.

Clean and well-organized: I can actually find stuff here! Hallelujah! Large enough to have a good selection, but not so large you end up wandering miles in search of what you need. Fair prices, good location, helpful staff. Suck it, Home Depot.

Their BBQ sandwich gave me horrible food poisoning. Their five-dollar (!!!) red velvet cupcakes are inedible. And their roasted vegetable sandwich (which I tried a couple times during my vegetarian phase) made me gag. I've had some good meals here, too, but I can't stand the clunkers - especially when they are very expensive clunkers ($10 for a sandwich and $5 for a cupcake).

They need to institute some serious quality control. Until then, I'm avoiding this place.

Silver Moon Bakery

This is my neighborhood bakery, and it took awhile to grow on me.

Things I adore about Silver Moon:

- chocolate orange rolls
- chocolate espresso rolls
- their espresso drinks (especially their lattes)

Caveats:
- sometimes they run out of the best goodies
- there's often a line out the door (but it moves fast)
- their brioche things are a bit dry and flavorless (IMO)

Despite its minor drawbacks, is place is the reason why I often walk around with a ring of chocolate around my mouth.

Truly horrid. I had the extreme displeasure of dealing with these people after the city towed my car.

In addition to charging me $400 to get my car back, they dented my car and are refusing to pay for it. The women in the office rolled their eyes and laughed at me as I filled out the complaint form.

They deserve to go out of business.

There's nothing better than wandering over to Bread & Cie as a Sunday morning fades into afternoon. Get a swimmable mocha, a bowl of soup and a sandwich and munch away and watch passers-by from the vantage point of an outside table.

Everything here is delectable, from pastries and desserts to bread, salads and sandwiches. I'm especially crazy for their ginger cupcakes, when they have them.

A great place for coffee or tea at any time of the day or night, but their desserts and cupcakes are just ok. I have an out-of-control sweet tooth but their cupcakes are just too sweet for me.

(Super-secret shoutout to Babycakes staff: I have a killer chocolate cupcake recipe you can have.)

However, their ambiance is really great, their location is convenient for me, and their staff is sweet and friendly, so four stars.

Holy retail nirvana, Batman! I'm very impressed by this store. It's as good, or better, than the Carlsbad and Chula Vista locations, and it's not out in the boonies!

The real test of an Anthro location is the sale room, and this one was TO.DIE.FOR. It was well-organized by color, with nearly every item available in a range of sizes. The selection of sale items was amazing and best of all, the room was nearly empty - no more fighting fellow shoppers for that last size 2! If you like Anthro's duds but hate the prices, you will be in heaven. Lots of good deals here.

The rest of the store is lots of fun, too, whether you're buying or just browsing. The staff is friendly and helpful, even when I hauled about 30 pieces into the dressing room. Definitely stop by if you're a fan of Anthro's brand of faux-quaintness.

Nunu's Cocktail Lounge

Wha? Why haven't I reviewd this place yet?

My favorite local drinking hole, by far. A "straight" bar, especially compared to the other bars in Hillcrest.

Nunu's brings strong drinks and old-school atmosphere. I love the skeezy guys who have seemingly permanently molded to their bar stools. Come early so you can grab a booth, and prepare to walk or take a cab home because you're sure to get blotto.

The food is typical bar fare: burgers, deep-fried stuff, and the like.

The crowd here is fun too. You'll find the aforementioned skeezy regulars, rabid jock types, a few hipsters, some poseur guys who didn't make it to the glitzy clubs downtown, and lots of other colorful characters of all ages. It's a free-for-all, really.
