Sally's Nails

Sally's charges $20 for a brazilian wax (or bikini wax, if you prefer) and $6 for an eyebrow wax. The place isn't fancy... it's a tiny salon on the ave. However, she did a great job and it was very quick and as painless as it can get. When I commented on being impressed by the speed she replied that she'd been waxing for 16 years. They take walk-ins as well as appointments.

I'm not really into manicures/pedicures for environmental reasons. Those chemicals are pretty bad for people/the world. However, if you're into that, those prices also seem very reasonable... I think it was $11-12 for manicures if I remember correctly.

People find it unimaginable that I'm a vegetarian who doesn't like falafel. Every once in awhile I give it another try just to placate their insistence that maybe I've never had good falafel.

I still don't like falafel. If I did, though, I'd probably like Samir's version.

I can say that I liked the garlic fries a lot. I was expecting just some chunks of garlic on fries, but instead it was a delicious sauce.

The hot spicy tea was tasty.

The prices are very reasonable - $4 for a sandwich.

As everyone else has commented, Samir is terribly nice. The place is wallpapered with photos of him and customers/friends/family.

My tofu sandwich wasn't anything exciting, but it was reasonably priced. However, the frozen yogurt was quite delicious. It's yogurt-like frozen yogurt that's tart vs. the more common american "frozen yogurt" which is filled with sugar. I like the taste of a more tart yogurt combined with sweet toppings, and it's healthier too.

The three stars is comparative to other places I've tried on the UW campus, not compared to a real coffeeshop. The coffee itself I'd rate just a two. It's consistently prepared far too hot and chars both the soy milk and my tongue. It's not delicious either. When I bring my own mug, it gets filled up to the point where I have to pour some out in the trash can to be able to put the lid on. Normally I'd just drink it, but I can't do that when it's so hot. I've tried ordering it "not very hot", etc. to no avail. When I first started I didn't know to hand them the travel mug without the lid, so the lid would disappear and I'd stand around waiting for it.

However, every place I've tried so far on campus has mediocre coffee, and this one at least has compost and recycling bins vs. everyone throwing their stuff in the trash. They have a few snack options (Odwalla bars, etc.)

I ordered yakisoba with tofu. It was bland and greasy. However, the frozen yogurt was delicious. It was the less sweetened kind of froyo where it tastes more like actual yogurt and is probably relatively healthy, and they have a variety of different toppings (mango, strawberry, blueberry, almond, walnut, chocolate chips, mochi, gummy bears are a few I remember).

The portions are huge so $8 was enough for both generously sized lunch and dinner meals. However, neither was very satisfying. I poured on a ton of cock sauce in an attempt to make it mildly interesting.

They don't really have waiter service... you just order up front and they bring it out to you.

I don't think I'd come back here for lunch, but I'd definitely come just for the frozen yogurt.

I have no idea why it took me forever to discover that maximus minimus has an entirely vegan sandwich... and that it's delicious, as is the fresh squeezed gingery juice.

I'm superstoked that Seattle's finally starting to consider relaxing regulations on food carts so that we may one day resemble the glorious foodcartland of Portland.

Ruzhen Mongolian Grill

I've been to multiple mongolian grills and have usually enjoyed them. I like that you can choose whether you want a meat, fish, or vegetarian meal and completely customize the ingredients down to the sauces. Granted, they use the same grill for everything, so some vegans & vegetarians may not be down with that.

I'm not sure what made this one slightly worse than others. I followed the sauce instructions and then added lots of extra garlic and lots of extra spicy stuff just like I always do, but I couldn't taste any of the sauce. They offer a ton of additional sauces which I haven't seen previously at a mongolian grill (curry, plum sauce, etc.) but none of them seemed to salvage the flavor.

The atmosphere was nothing to write home about but that's true of most places on the ave. The bathroom stall was small enough that I initially couldn't fit into it with my backpack on and had to remove it and hover it on my lap so as not to set it on the questionable ground.

I can only assume it has something to do with the ingredients themselves. I don't know enough about vegetables to glance at one and determine whether it's fresh or what its origin is, but these ones tasted somehow dry and old and not-fresh.

There were only a few people in the place when I went at 5:30pm on a weeknight and I walked by other packed restaurants so it doesn't seem like the overall "meh" sentiment of yelpers differs from the non-yelper sentiment.

If you haven't been to a mongolian grill before, don't judge the concept based on this place.

I rocked a soy morning glory chai instead of coffee, but it was tasty. I was quite pleased with the music selection... Aesop Rock and various funk/jazz classics. I like the big, airy space with high ceilings. They had a handy board with a lot of community postings for art projects, housing, studios, and upcoming events. Free wireless of course :)

I immediately loved this place because it reminded me of my house. I live in a group house where we periodically host shows with odd electronic music. I'm pretty sure this is a similar situation, albeit with a better setup.  They have a main room with a stage and room for a decent amount of people and loud sound. The decor is also creative and amusing. I uploaded a few photos.

Le Pichet

My housemate told me that Le Pichet was related to Cafe Presse. I love Cafe Presse. So when I happened to be downtown, I got a crew of friends to check it out.

It's true that the menu options are limited for vegetarians. However, I think the few options which do exist are still delicious. My friends all ordered meat dishes and I tried a salad and gazpacho. I was most excited about the gazpacho but it turned out to be disappointing. The salad itself was delicious but oddly small. Portions at Le Pichet seem smaller than at Cafe Presse. They still have the same reasonably priced wine options (by the glass, demi pichet, pichet or full bottle) which are great for sharing with a group of friends.

It's a lot smaller than Cafe Presse so reservations might be a good idea.
