Samir's Mediterranean Grill
Categories: Middle Eastern, Greek, Mediterranean
Neighborhood: University District
I still don't like falafel. If I did, though, I'd probably like Samir's version.
I can say that I liked the garlic fries a lot. I was expecting just some chunks of garlic on fries, but instead it was a delicious sauce.
The hot spicy tea was tasty.
The prices are very reasonable - $4 for a sandwich.
As everyone else has commented, Samir is terribly nice. The place is wallpapered with photos of him and customers/friends/family.

However, every place I've tried so far on campus has mediocre coffee, and this one at least has compost and recycling bins vs. everyone throwing their stuff in the trash. They have a few snack options (Odwalla bars, etc.)

The portions are huge so $8 was enough for both generously sized lunch and dinner meals. However, neither was very satisfying. I poured on a ton of cock sauce in an attempt to make it mildly interesting.
They don't really have waiter service... you just order up front and they bring it out to you.
I don't think I'd come back here for lunch, but I'd definitely come just for the frozen yogurt.

I'm superstoked that Seattle's finally starting to consider relaxing regulations on food carts so that we may one day resemble the glorious foodcartland of Portland.

Ruzhen Mongolian Grill
Categories: Chinese, Mongolian
Neighborhood: University District
I'm not sure what made this one slightly worse than others. I followed the sauce instructions and then added lots of extra garlic and lots of extra spicy stuff just like I always do, but I couldn't taste any of the sauce. They offer a ton of additional sauces which I haven't seen previously at a mongolian grill (curry, plum sauce, etc.) but none of them seemed to salvage the flavor.
The atmosphere was nothing to write home about but that's true of most places on the ave. The bathroom stall was small enough that I initially couldn't fit into it with my backpack on and had to remove it and hover it on my lap so as not to set it on the questionable ground.
I can only assume it has something to do with the ingredients themselves. I don't know enough about vegetables to glance at one and determine whether it's fresh or what its origin is, but these ones tasted somehow dry and old and not-fresh.
There were only a few people in the place when I went at 5:30pm on a weeknight and I walked by other packed restaurants so it doesn't seem like the overall "meh" sentiment of yelpers differs from the non-yelper sentiment.
If you haven't been to a mongolian grill before, don't judge the concept based on this place.

Le Pichet

It's true that the menu options are limited for vegetarians. However, I think the few options which do exist are still delicious. My friends all ordered meat dishes and I tried a salad and gazpacho. I was most excited about the gazpacho but it turned out to be disappointing. The salad itself was delicious but oddly small. Portions at Le Pichet seem smaller than at Cafe Presse. They still have the same reasonably priced wine options (by the glass, demi pichet, pichet or full bottle) which are great for sharing with a group of friends.
It's a lot smaller than Cafe Presse so reservations might be a good idea.

I'm not really into manicures/pedicures for environmental reasons. Those chemicals are pretty bad for people/the world. However, if you're into that, those prices also seem very reasonable... I think it was $11-12 for manicures if I remember correctly.
