Extraordinary Desserts

Not only are all the desserts beautifully plated, but they taste delicious, too!

I'm a creature of habit, so every time I come here, I order the chocolate strudel. I don't know anyone who doesn't like it, and if I met someone who did, I'd seriously question my relationship with this person.

During my most recent visit, though, I ordered my new favorite, Chocolate Croissant Bread Pudding. YOWZA. My friend took a bite or two (or five), but not without asking me to drizzle chocolate sauce on it slowly while talking dirty to him first. Is it weird that it wasn't the first time someone has asked me to do that???

I love to pair the dessert with their matcha green tea latte or birthday tea, and if I feel like drinking (and I always do), I enjoy a glass of Moscato d'Asti or Stone IPA.

Break of Dawn

It's fitting that this restaurant is named Break of Dawn, because my cousins dragged my ass there at an ungodly hour on a Saturday. I'm only ever up that early for two things: food and court-ordered appearances. All the coffee in Colombia won't make me a morning person, but the food at Break of Dawn might!

I ordered the Creme Brulee French Toast, which was so divine that I almost spontaneously conceived a child while devouring it. It was better than the Strawberries and Cream French Toast that I inhaled at Cafe 21 in San Diego (which I'm pretty sure I wrote a dirty haiku about, so that's saying a lot).

My cousin ordered the craziest mac and cheese I've ever seen. It had Sicilian sausage, short ribs, smoked gouda, tomato carbonara sauce, bacon fried eggs... I'm almost certain the kitchen sink was in there, too. It was also unbelievably good, and I was craving something salty after that french toast, so I may have had a bite (or six).

My sister and other cousin both ordered the Eggs Benedict with pesto sauce, or as we like to call it, "Green Eggs and Ham." I don't know if I would eat them in a box, or if I would like them with a fox, because the portion seemed small in comparison to the rest of the food we ordered. It came with a generous side of delicious homestyle potatoes, though.

The only real complaint I have about this place is that the Passion Fruit Mai Tai was listed on the menu, and when I asked for it, he said, "Mango Mai Tai." And I was like, "No.. Passion Fruit Mai Tai." And he was like, "No.. It's Mango." And I was like, "OK. I'll have the Mango." It was too early to argue (but apparently not too early to drink).

Heaven Sent Desserts

My friends and I came here after a night of drinking in North Park. Major points for being open till midnight on the weekend!

I indulged in an Irish Angel--a rich, moist chocolate cake layered with Bailey's creme brulee. If this dessert was sent from heaven, I wish I wasn't such a bitch to my ex-boyfriend, 'cause I sure as hell won't be enjoying this cake in the afterlife! I better savor this shit while I'm alive.

I stopped by here again during the Taste of North Park event, and they definitely had the most generous sample... a freakishly large piece of chocolate cake! Imagine my surprise when my fork hit the bottom of my empty plate. I had so many questions... How did I eat all that cake? Did I just have an orgasm? Is my sister gonna finish hers???

I think I'm in love.

During the Taste of North Park event, I stopped by this restaurant expecting some sausage, but I didn't end up getting any (story of my life).

I did, however, enjoy a butternut squash empanada with chipotle cream sauce. Its crust was buttery and flaky, while the squash was piping hot and delicious paired with the spicy sauce. It was definitely one of the better "tastes" during this event.

I'll have a better analysis after I've had their sausage (that's what she said).

Station Tavern & Burgers

My friends and I literally stumbled by this place after getting our Booty Bassment on down the street at Whistle Stop. The restaurant is beautifully designed, and they've got these gorgeous lights hanging in their outdoor patio, so we decided we'd eat there.

My burger was amazing, and I wanted its pillowy challah bun to have my babies. Hodad's still has the best burger I've ever eaten, but Station Tavern is a very close second. If the bacon at Hodad's joined forces with Station Tavern's challah buns, its level of deliciousness would be illegal in some small countries. Their garlic fries were pretty outstanding, too. And it was cheap! The four of us spent $50--burgers, sides and beers included.

It's in South Park, so it's very family-friendly. Everyone was there with their babies and/or their dogs. Well, everyone except for us. #1: I have yet to reproduce. And #2: I left my yorkie's funky butt at home where he belongs.

We had a good time hanging out till they closed at midnight, and we've all been back at least a couple times since then.

Crepe World

Their crepes are garbage. All the crepes I've ever eaten outside of Crepe World have been soft and delicate, while Crepe World's crepes are more akin to flattened fortune cookies; they're crispy like fortune cookies, and they taste like them, too. I even used a semicolon to show you how serious I am. These are not real crepes, ya'll.

Crepe World should change their name to Waffle World. I've had one waffle that was perfect. It was fluffy, perfectly cooked, and evenly covered in taro ice cream, Nutella, strawberries, and whipped cream. That waffle earned the one star I gave this place.

I refuse to give any additional stars for these reasons:

- They take FOREVER. It doesn't matter if you're the only customer here. I've waited upwards of 20 minutes for one waffle.

- On two separate occasions, they ran out of waffle batter. Once at two in the afternoon, and another during dinnertime. Why didn't they just go in the back and make more? They would've taken 20 minutes to make my waffle anyway.

- Every time I order Nutella as one of the toppings, they forget to put it on there. EVERY TIME. They end up giving it to me in a cup on the side after I've reminded them.

- The last time I was there, they were out of taro ice cream. I asked if they would have it in the future or if it was out indefinitely, and she told me, "We just couldn't find it." I mean...???

Partly because I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt, but mostly because my waffle iron was in storage, I came back a couple of times. But they have screwed up every time, so I think I should take a trip to my storage unit and give up on this place.

Crab Hut

Forget the fried stuff. I always order a pound of boiled shrimp with full house/medium sauce. I once made the mistake of ordering the spicy level hot, and my mouth was on fire. And so was another unmentionable part of my body! Yikes. And I'm someone who carries crushed red pepper in my purse at all times (which makes me an expert on spiciness levels, obvi).

You'll have better luck parking on the street than in the crowded parking lot... especially with all those Asians who don't know how to drive (myself included). It's not racist if I'm Asian, right? Is that how it works?

The Crab Hut downtown is closer to me than this location, but I trek it up here because what is Crab Hut without the promise of boba after? Besides, I'm not trying to go downtown (or anywhere for that matter) directly after eating here. You have to take two showers and burn your clothes afterward to get rid of the smell.

I went here for happy hour with friends before a concert.

We all had $2.22 tall boys and half off totchos (nachos with tots instead of chips!) to start. I liked the chili totchos better than the pulled pork ones. I would've tried the chilaquiles totchos, but I was worried the sunny side up eggs would make me chilaquiles in my chones.

I ordered the Dirty Sanchez (grilled cheese with jalapenos and bacon) for my main entree. What was once my favorite move is now my favorite sandwich! Just kidding. (It's not my favorite sandwich.) It was a little on the small side, but both delicious and half off during happy hour. I would've been really disappointed if I paid the full $10 for such a small portion, so I wouldn't dream of ordering it outside of happy hour.

Even if I didn't have a good overall experience, my review would've been completely redeemed by the fact that I ran into Adam Brody from The OC because his brother was throwing a charity event here. If only Seth Cohen was real... he would've, like, totally understood me.

I came here for restaurant week, but instead of partaking in their special menu, my friends and I decided to order appetizers and drink our dinner instead in the form of white sangria. Not only was everything we ordered plated beautifully, it all tasted pretty outstanding, too.

We had Pipian Crusted Brie (with jalapeno jelly, honey roasted garlic, grilled nopales, mole negro, and scallion flatbread), Scallop and Shrimp Ceviche (cured in lemon juice with cucumber pico de gallo), and Arugula, Frissee and Radicchio (with cotija-stuffed dates wrapped in applewood smoked bacon, blackened shrimp, and a prickly pear vinaigrette). I couldn't get enough of the mole negro and bacon-wrapped dates! The salad and ceviche are half off during happy hour, so def try to arrive before 6:30 if possible.

The white sangria was ridiculously good and refreshing. It's $50 for a pitcher, and we were able to get at least 10 glasses out of it. It costs $11 a glass, so if you think you're going to have a few drinks each (and we always do), then get the pitcher for sure!

After an awesome first time, I will definitely be back for seconds! I'd love to see what else this restaurant has to offer.

Viva Brazil

I love, love, love this place. I heard about it through Reader Steals, and was able to get a Brazilian wax for $21. It normally costs $45, but you get $10 off for mentioning Yelp as a first time guest. I've been to the Pretty Kitty and Urban Skin Care, and this was by far the best Brazilian I've ever had. They use a homemade hard wax instead of the usual wax strips and it's a lot less painful. I have a ridiculously low threshold for pain--I popped a vicodin or two (or five) to ease the peroxide-induced pain of teeth whitening... I'm exaggerating zero percent. So you can only imagine how crucial it is for me to find a gentle esthetician. Linda was great and I highly recommend her! She regularly waxes two of my friends and they love her, too. Having your vag exposed can be uncomfortable and embarrassing (unless you like that sort of thing), but Linda made me feel completely at ease. I will definitely be back!
