King of Thai Noodle Cafe

Yay... another late-night joint that's tasty and cheap.  These seem to be harder to find in SF than you'd think so I have to give super props for it being open after 10... it's even open until 1am!

That being said, we ordered squid salad and shrimp in garlic sauce with steamed rice.  Both were prepared very fast and were fresh and tasty upon arrival.  There was lot's of garlic!!  I love garlic... I also liked the cilantro and my dish had a good amount of crisp shrimp.  I was worried since it was almost midnight but all was good.

We'll definitely be back.  It's a lil better tan average Thai because of the combination of taste, price and being open late-night.

See ya there.

Sutro Heights Park

Beautiful Beautiful Beautiful... this park was such a perfect destination for yesterday's lazy Sunday.  We took our dog, a blanket, and a ball and spent an hour or so walking around, playing with the dog and sitting on the old estate fence.  We were content to relax, soak in the sun, and enjoy the amazing views of the Ocean beach, the coast line and the ocean itself.

I would highly recommend Sutro Heights Park for daytime fun or to watch the sun go down.  It's great to walk around and imagine what it must have looked like at it's peak... when San Francisco's old millionaire mayor had his mansion up there.  What a yard!

Note: The pup was a lil muddy after playing in this park.

See ya there!

The Tennessee Grill

 Update - 11/9/2009
Went to Tennessee for lunch today.  It was my 3rd trip in the week or so since we discovered it and the 1st time I ordered non-breakfast food.  So here's my updated opinion.

The Pancakes still rock.  They're better than the French Toast and Tennessee will let you upgrade your toast to 1 pancake for free. :)
The Grilled Cheese is taasty but the potato salad is a lil too creamy for me.
The Eggs and Hashbrowns are still great.

My grilled cheese and potato salad came to 4.92$ today (plus my 2$ tip).  That's a pretty good deal!!!  Cheaper than fast food and according to the parking meter, I was in and out in about 20 min.  How's that for service?  Of course, I sat at the bar... it was fun to watch them cook.  Just ignore the liberal use of butter/oil. lol

See ya there!

The Tennessee Grill is a tasty lil diner that has incredibly reasonable prices.  It's a blast from the past where normal, working class people can go, be comfortable and have a good meal for a decent price.  San Francisco seems to lack joints like these... it's got more of an East Coast Diner kinda feel.

We checked Tennessee Grill out last night because it was one of the only breakfast joints in the neighborhood that's open after 3pm.  They close at 9pm everyday, btw.  When we left, we were glad of our new Yelp find.  We both had eggs (fried eggs and scrambled egg beaters), hash browns and substituted a pancake for our toast .  The bill was less than 13$.  Amazing.

Now, the food is above-average good (tasty pancakes and awesome syrup) and not too greasy but the atmosphere could use a lil work.  Got paint? The joint needs some color. LoL  It's actually the kind of nondescript gray place you could totally forget about, except the prices will probably keep you coming back.  We'll probably be back the next time we have breakfast food cravings and don't wanna cook.

Oh, also, the pasta the guy across from us was eating looked tasty too.  They have a wide variety on their menu, not just breakfast food.  I think I remember burgers, a small salad bar, pastas, etc... typical diner fare.

Service was friendly, restaurant was clean enough.  In general, I like places with booths, tables and counter bar seating options.  :)  I hope people tip well though.  At inexpensive places like this, I worry about the servers not making enough tips!

    See ya there.

The Slanted Door

Hmmm, I'm trying to be nice to a place that charges an arm and a leg for 'Vietnamese' food that, in my humble white girl experience, is not really even very Vietnamese.  In all fairness... the food was average-good but too expensive. Also, the hostess was a lil too snotty and the waiter, kind of a kiss-ass.  (Oh wait, in all fairness, I've actually backpacked Vietnam and then later, roomed with Vietnamese for years... lol.)

Guess it's still 'A-OK' but I'm used to getting amazing Vietnamese food for a fraction of the cost and I try not to dock a place too much for price just because I'm cheap sometimes. LoL  Guess I'm just not 'foodie' enough to deal with places like the Slanted Door.

We sat outside so we could see the ocean which was nice but it was too cold.  Too bad the wait for inside was too long.  What can I expect from a place in the Embarcadero?

Won't see ya there.

Hankook Supermarket

Wowwowowowowow... what an amazing market. We joked that it's a  Korean version of the really cool Mi Puebla Mexican grocery store in Hayward (others probably don't get that but whatever - it's a compliment).  LoL

There's not much I can say that the billion other reviewers haven't said already, I just wanted to let y'all know that this place rocks.  Stop in for a clean, organized and well-stocked experience in Korean shopping, mostly grocery but of course, there are some other side shops with clothes and trinkets.

Note: You can get prepared foods there as well as groceries.

We *heart* Hankook!

See ya there. :)

Omg... we've seriously gone here a couple/few times a week since we discovered it.  We have to stop.

Go at your own peril... this place is too delicious and addicting!  Perfect milk tea with boba and eggette waffles.

Nomnom... Eggettes, we wish we hadn't discovered you last night... and then again tonight! (Thank-you for staying open later than the other joints) LoL  We went in for some boba and and egg waffle thingy (hong kong style waffle) and ended up really liking both.  Why?  Because they weren't too sweet.  The egg crate was tasty but... healthier tasting than most similar desserts.  Same with the milk tea... it was delish but not too sweet.  Extra bonus because the tapioca was perrrfect.  It was just perfectly chewy and perfectly sweetened.

Total:  6.50$ for a large milk tea with boba and and egg waffle.

We'll be back for sure.  I just wish it had a lil more... atmosphere? lol  Some color or something?

    See ya there!

Fujiyama-Ya Japanese Restaurant

What hurts the most, is having excited anticipation for a joint... and it letting you down.  Way down.  Down to the ground down.  That's what happened with Fujiyama-Ya and us tonight.

We'd been hoping to replace our all-time favorite, Ray's Sushi in Hayward but, were sadly disappointed.  Way down.  *sigh*  We walked in with full spirits and loved the cute look of the lil Japanese restaurant.  The wait was a lil long to order but we didn't care too much.  The miso came out... it was above average.  This is where everything started going downhill.

Though the prices were really reasonable, most of the food was a big disappointment.  My gyoza tasted ok but were mushy.  It's like they'd been over boiled/steamed and then lightly seared on the bottom.  Next, the Tuna Lover roll was very salty and had way too much mayo in the crab.  Not a good sign.  When my Dynamite roll came out, it was covered in a gross creamy sauce and the tuna inside was fishy tasting and drenched in a mayo sauce too.  It was mushy.  Gross Gross... I think the 2 of us only ate 3 pieces... which is saying a lot for a couple who rarely wastes food.  The Hamachi Nigiri was stringy and not so good.  The Tekka Don (maguro chirashi) had such a small amount of maguro, I thought they'd made some mistake.  It's taste was ok though.  Also, the udon had nicely chewy noodles but the tempura itself, was SO GREASY that when you pressed a chopstick into it, grease seeped out.  You could taste the oil in the batter.  Gross.

I feel so let down.  I guess that's the danger of hoping for too much.  If you like cheap sushi and Japanese food that is drenched in mayo and grease, this is your joint.  lol.  I know there are people out there who do so I'm trying to be objective.

Definitely won't see ya there.

Yelp Elite Event @ Melt Lounge

Thank-you Melt and Yelp for another fun evening out!  The Roaring 20's theme was so fun!  We compared it to being back in our grandparent's era.  :)

We both super-loved the Rain vodka.  We're sold!  It was tasty and smooth in shot form and with our mixed drinks... a vodka tonic and vodka cranberry.  We'll definitely look for Rain Organic brand when we go to the market and bars!

The restaurant itself was a cute space that's we'll revisit soon.  We find the best spots through these Yelp parties!  My guy's office is just down the street so we'll probably hit it up for a lunch, early dinner, or maybe even their Halloween parties.  The only glitch was we didn't get to try any food... I think it was there but maybe there wasn't much of it?  We saw some fries but the line was too long and then later, I saw a salad but there were no plates?  We actually had to leave early because we were hungry!  Ah well... the drinks were tasty and we got to dance to a few songs with the fun DJ upstairs before we hit the Peninsula Diner next door.

Thanks Connie, Jessica and Melt!  Loved the pics!

See ya around!

Yum... this place, Sweetea, has some of the best tasting milk tea with boba!  It was a perfect mix of tea, milk, and sweet and had plenty of well-cooked chewy bobas.  Nomnom... delicious!

I suggest you pick-up some tea here and head to Brigadoon park for the cement slides... that's what we did.  We'll do it again the next time we're in S. San Jose too!

See ya there!

This place, Q-Cup, has the worst milk tea with boba ever!  We walked in to satiate our boba craving and only left disappointed.  The milk tea was a terrible, like milky water.  And the boba, the few that were in the cup, were too soft and mushy.  Gross.

Gross. Gross. Gross.

Won't see ya there!
