Capn's Steakhouse & Saloon

We knew going into our first visit to the new Capn's that Randy Schopen would not disappoint us and we were right. The four of us had steaks and pork chops and all as excellent! I had an 8 oz. New York strip steak and it was a little thin for my liking, but what can you do with just 8 ounces. I ordered it with a garlic crust and mushrooms with a mashed potato side.I ate every speck of steak! It was very, very good. My wife had the New York Strip steak too and it was just as good without the additions. The rest of our party had pork chops and were also not disappointed!

Deserts were great, the service was good and overall we were very pleased.

The Loco Gringo

A nice little place and needed in Oregon. We stopped in for a quick bite after I worked late. The menu is a nice selection of American and Mexican cuisine. On the American side, they have burgers, chicken, pasta, fish and lots more. The Mexican side is huge too. If you cannot find something here, you are too picky. We wanted something quick and ordered tacos. My wife had two ground beef tacos, one on a flour tortilla and one on a corn tortilla. She was very pleased with her selection. A great taste and full tortillas. I had a blacken shrimp flour tortilla taco and a Chorizo flour tortilla taco. We also ordered chips and cheese. I asked if the cheese had salsa mixed in, thinking of chili con queso and did not get a good answer from our waitress, but I think she was new. We received chips, a cup of salsa and a cup of melted cheese. I mixed them together. The tacos were very good. The blacken shrimp taco had a good bite to it and was not Americanized with cheese, lettuce and such. It had just blacken shrimp, onions, cilantro and Pico de Gallo. Very good. The Chorizo taco was good, just not as spicy as I like them. Again, just some onions, cilantro and Chorizo. I asked for some lime wedges and received enough for my tacos. The shrimp taco was so good I ordered a grilled tilapia with Pico de Gallo. Again it was true to form. Grilled tilapia, not deep fried and not over done. If we had to judge just from this meal, we give The Loco Gringo two thumbs up for sure. Worth stopping in for a meal, for sure.

Giuseppe's Italian Restaurant

We came down for racing and ended up staying in Denton. We drove downtown to see what was around for shops, etc. On the way back to our motel, we saw Giuseppe's Italian Restaurant and it looked interesting. It was an old house and was changed into an Italian restaurant the is very comfortable.

I had more than enough food. The service was great and the food was great. All six of us had different meals and were very pleased with each dish. My seafood pasta dish was something I wish I could find back in Wisconsin. Shrimp, clams and mussels in a white wine lemon sauce that was over the top. We all ate until we could not stuff any more food into us. But I had to try the Tiramisu and was hoping I would get some help to finish off the treat. It was great, not store bought, but homemade and pretty good. Maybe above average, but not great. It was a nice finish to the meal, but based on the meal we just ate, we all thought it would be more over the top.

Dinning at Giuseppe's Italian Restaurant was a great for a nice evening meal. The prices were reasonable , in fact, very reasonable for the amount of food and the quality of the food.

Razzoo's Cajun Cafe

We just got into Texas from Wisconsin and were looking for lunch on our way to the motel. Razzoo's was along I-35 and looked interesting. It was not the normal chain restaurant found in Wisconsin. The six of us all ordered something different. We all had good food. I may have had better Cajun food in Louisiana, but for good food at a nice price, Razzoo's was worth the stop.

I had crawdaddies 2 ways and was very pleased. The crawfish Etoufee was great. The fries and the fried crawfish were very good. I would rather have sauté crawfish, but I ate every bite, so it had to be alright.

The other 5 dinners had everything from the cheeseburger to catfish. All were pleased with their meals. We had plenty to eat. The place is just fun too. The decor is fun, the staff is fun and the menu is worth framing and hanging on your wall.

A great place for lunch. A very nice selection of sandwiches and salads. We had lunch, but they also have breakfast. Very friendly staff. They have a daily soup to go with the lunch selections. I had a Southwest Turkey panini that was very good loaded with turkey. The sandwich also had lettuce, spiced chipotle sauce, onions, peppers and cheddar cheese on a sour dough bread. You can have chips, pasta salad or a daily selection to go with the sandwiches. Others had egg salad and deli sandwiches.

Hy-Vee

We stopped at the new Hy-Vee on our way to Door County to pick up some treats to take to our friends. We were blown away by the store and the employees. The store reminded us of a very upscale grocery store we visited in Birmingham Alabama, but the prices were a lot lower and more inline with Madison prices. The deli is more like a restaurant and deli combination. We had breakfast there and were impressed with the food, real plates and silverware. Not gourmet food, but very good for the price. The deli had lots of items for you to take home and re-heat if you do not like cooking.

We picked up some rye bread that was very good and flavorful. All the bakery items looked good and they had a very large selection. The meat we picked up was some of the best we had, an opinion shared by our friends too. The bacon-wrapped steaks were priced very well and were very good, lean and flavorful. I grilled them and you could cut them with a fork. We will be back for those for sure. We also picked up a pork loin and I did that in the oven on a bed of fresh apples, then finished off with a local Door County sauerkraut. It was some of most flavorful, lean and best pork loin I can remember having. Again, the price was reasonable.

I hope the great selection of fine meat was not just an opening week trick to get us to come back, but I do not think so. The butcher seamed real proud of his department. They did not have any veal yet, something this Italian Swiss sometimes has a hard time finding in Madison. The butcher said they would be getting some in soon. I will be back soon to get some.

Overall, we were impressed with the store. It is a very good addition to Madison.

I love to cook and use lots of different olive oils. The Oilerie is a must stop for those who like to cook. Not only do they have many different olive oils, but also vinegars, spices and other food items. Curt started out selling his own spices before adding olive oils. It was a good move. He had one of the first olive oil bars in the midwest. Show owner comment »

I love the Village Cafe for breakfast. You have to get there early or you will be waiting for a table on most summer weekends. During the week the wait time is shorter, but in any case, it is worth the wait. If you have to wain, look around at their decor, it is fun and great. A good restaurant needs more than decor to keep people coming back, and the Village Cafe has great food. I eat mostly breakfast there and there is plenty of choices. Overall a great place to eat.

Door County is known for their abundance of artists. Artists need supplies and the Artists Guild fills this need very well. Lots of supplies for just about any artists, but mostly painters and watercolor artists. They are locally owned and I have found very friendly. As a photographer, I have even found items I could use for my art that I had a hard time finding in other shops.
