Saarloos & Sons

Ugh, Yelp still hasn't incorporated the 6th star I've been asking for-- Specifically for Saarloos & Sons?!

It's a rarity that I walk into a wine bar and instantly feel welcomed like I did at Saarloos. Keith Saarloos was both welcoming, witty, and unabashedly comedic in every sense of the word.

Let's start from the beginning. I opened the door and found a room full of picture-framed walls, delicate grey interior wall and chartreuse stenciled vintage wall paper...and a very entertaining set of wine-os.

After some debating over which wine tasting option we would start with, we decided to let Keith make the call. Not only did we try some really great wines, we were told the stories behind each.  "Brielle", "Son" "Mother" "Extended Family" (one of my favorites) and 194VII "Man and Wife" (another one of my favorites).

I even ended up with an unmarked bottle of a seriously delicious Rose wine. The man and I drank the whole bottle one night without even blinking. I didn't want it to end.

I'm planning another trip up there, and it can't be soon enough. Saarloos & Sons, you really showed me what it's like to have a passion for the wine.  Such an amazing family establishment. Show owner comment »

Yeah... I won't be going back.

1 server in the whole restaurant. Bus boys brought food we never ordered (40 mins after ordering) and DIDN'T bring us the food we DID order.

Ordered the spare rib dim sum.... yeah... I couldn't even eat it. I took one bite and got bone and a HUGE chunk... no, BALL of cartilage the size of a large marble. And we all thought it was going to wrapped in dumpling, since it sounded like it on the menu. Instead, it was watery, flavorless meat.

The baked chicken bun was decent... sweet flaky bun, but very little chicken in it.... severely disappointed but at least there was some sugar on top

The chicken fried rice saved the day...not because it was spectacular, but because it was decent. Albeit very salty, it was decent.

As far as the service, I don't even know what was happening there. Our entire table got all of their food and two of us were left staring at empty plates. 15 mins later they were bringing the wrong dishes and everyone else had finished eating. So awkward.

My stomach hurts. :\

Very much so a fan.

I entered into the white-washed warehouse expecting little more than an establishment with delicious food (based on a friend's recommendation) but was pleasantly surprised at the minimalistic decor that boasted pristine steel espresso maker with the capability of making 6 espressos at the same time, large commercial-grade cheese cyclones, a wall shelved with aging parmesano reggiano, a bakery and gelateria duo and a larger than life pizza oven.

I was overwhelmed by intrigue. I picked up the menu whilst simultaneously snapping photos of the warehouse interior and found an exhaustive list of unique pizzas, pastas and...wait for it...a GELATO SANDWICH?! A fruit BIGNE?! Olive Foccacia?! I just simply couldn't resist myself.

We ordered, and ordered, and ordered. Our bill? Under $50. Everything had such a unique flavor and the quality of the food was refreshing. Fresh, made in-house, I suspect and made so so well.

Definitely going back.

Beach Massage & Day Spa

Well, I was kind of disappointed. I kind of had the same experience that ST. had.  I was pleasantly surprised upon arrival, but as time when on I was let down.  After writing this, I went from 3 stars to 2.

*Main points: If you dont want to read my rant*
- Masseuse was 15 Minutes late
- Poor massage technique and pressure consistency
- Front desk girl was loudly chatting with her friend right next to the thin walls of the day spa lounge where I waited for 20 minutes- made it hard to relax
-Poor music. Went between relaxing spa music with chimes and piano to Dave Mathews Band and Third Eye Blind..(?)
- Walls too thin- I could hear the business next door operating- made it really hard to relax while listening to a guy on the phone arranging some kind of pick-up of {an order} (?).

The spa is set up well and the girl at the counter was very nice when I arrived. She showed me through the waiting room with a faux fireplace and couches to the locker room where I changed into a robe and slippers. Nice for a 30 minute massage. I was 10 minutes early so I relaxed until my 11 o'clock appointment. It seemed like I was *waiting forever* and there were no clocks so I walked back to the locker room to check the time on my phone. 11:15. So...where was the masseuse that was supposed to come get me?

I was also disappointed that while I was in the waiting room before, the girl at the front desk was talking SO loudly with her friend- took away from the "day spa" feel and made me feel like I was listening to a gossip channel.

She forgot she had an appointment I guess. So my 30 minute deep tissue massage started at 11:25 and she gave me 45 minutes instead of 30 and added scented oil instead of regular oil. Smelled nice, but it didn't make up for the massage that I thought was pretty poor quality. Technique was a bit off. There's more...

When I walked in, she asked me what areas she'd like me to focus on...so I said "well my feet are a little sore from walking a lot and my neck and shoulders always hold a lot of tension, so I guess those areas". What I thought was weird was that for 45 minutes she ONLY worked on my neck, back and shoulders... no lotion or oil on my arms, hands, legs, feet- nothing. I thought that was REALLY weird. I've had 30 minute massages before- lots of times- and they have always balanced the time to massage my whole body. I mean, I could have left my jeans and shoes on and she probably wouldn't have noticed.

Sure, my shoulders felt better. Albeit, still knotty. I was pretty disappointed when I left.  Also kind of weird that the music went between spa music (piano balads and chimes to Dave Matthews Band). Threw me off big time.

Another qualm- MAN the walls are thin!! During my massage, I could hear a guy in the business next door talking on the phone and maybe ringing people up. Made it hard to relax.

I know it wasn't Burke Williams and that it wasn't expensive, but I had hope for better.

Guess I'll just have to treat myself to another Birthday massage!

Handy J Car Wash

Category: Car Wash
Neighborhood: Culver City

Update - 4/6/2011
Jeez. 80 Bucks for a car wash and you definitely should NOT see dirt spots on the roof, side of the door and sideview mirror.  Albeit, the inside was very well cleaned, I think they could have done a much better job.

They do a good job, but next time, I'm not going for the mini detail...or maybe I will and then just walk around the car like a d-bag and check for leftover dirt. (We drove in the desert the weekend before so the dirt was WAY visible- I don't think they should have missed it).

I do like that The Outdoor Grill is right there..that's a plus, but it's also not Handy J's business (is it?) so I can't rate it on that.

"THEY EVEN GOT THE HIDDEN CUP HOLDERS!"

JUST as I was pulling up, ordering The Abassador Wash, I looked over at my friend and said "They one thing I hate, is that car washes always forget to clean the cup holders!"  To my surprise, not only did they clean the cup holders, they cleaned out the door handle area and in between my seats and center console.

Thoroughly impressed that my leather seats, back and front, were also cleaned and leather-conditioned, wheels shiney and nooks/crannies are spotless- all for $30.

    I'll be back.

Oh, and while you're waiting...have a bit to eat at Outdoor Grill so you can chomp and watch as they clean your car. Convenient AND delish (especially the Tri-Tip Sandwhich).

Are you kidding me? 4 stars for this sub(sub, sub, sub)-par pit stop? Honestly- and I don't do this often- the "Bravo Burger" was one of the worst burgers I've ever had. I felt disgusting for hours. The fries weren't bad though... I ate all of those but failed to come close to finishing even half of the burger.

After lunch- en route to Yosemite- we made our way to the cheese and gift shop next to the restaurant, but after trying a couple of the samples, decided against buying anything. Meh.

I haven't written a lot of reviews lately, but felt that I had to write this one. Because when the lady at the next table over orders the same terrible meal you couldn't stomach, you just feel badly. I can't believe I paid what I did for such a terrible meal.

Yay- Def a fan, it was reasonably priced (I got a AAA discount!), had a convenient location, and served as a good midpoint between all the places I wanted to see in Seattle.

Kind of wish they had a bar, but if you like Sushi, apparently their restaurant Dragonfish isn't bad!

Good food: When you leave a restaurant and feel like your stomach is smiling like you've just done something really good.

That's exactly how I felt after indulging on lobster mashed potatoes, filet and wine.

The environment is a little loud, so it's not ideal for a quiet, romantic conversation, but it's lively and fun.

Bone in Filet 18 oz. - Fabulous. Juicy. Tender. Flavorful beyond belief.
Wine- delicious. Had a lovely Pinot Noir and a taste of my counterpart's wine as well.
Mac and Cheese- Well, I almost ALWAYS love Mac BUT Mastro's Mac n Cheese is extraordinarily good.

I was sooooooo full after dinner that I didn't have room for dessert ::GASP::  but I promised myself that I'd double up on dulces the next time I went ;)

The ambiance was great. It was a lot less pretentious than Cut. They definitely pack people into the restaurant which made it hard to have a conversation at points, but the ambiance was great anyways.    I ate upstairs on a wednesday night and it was still packed!

    I'll definitely be back!!

Was on vacation with a girlfriend of mine a few months before her wedding and found out about this new place through a Twitter follower of mine. My girlfriend was kinda freaking out because she hadn't yet found "the perfect dress," so when I heard about Luxe Bridal we figured we'd at least go and look.

Absolutely STUNNING dresses! Very unique and high quality- and the owner, Lisa was super helpful- she is obviously very passionate about what she does. Apparently they'd just opened a few weeks before but they had a ton of designers and options.

We spent hours trying on dresses...yes, I said "we." I may not be getting married any time soon, but how could I pass up trying on some of those gowns!

Just got back from a much needed appointment and I'm feeling so much better. I hadn't been in a while and started feeling my shoulder lock up, my neck ache and just feeling low in energy.

I took some time to relax with a muscle stimulator and heated towels while waiting for Dr. Jochen and it felt great.

Everyone at the office is so nice and welcoming- April and Mark are always so helpful and nice, as is everyone that works there.  It makes for a good experience when you're feeling uneasy about having someone work on your bones ;)

I also learned that they're redoing their website which is cool too. They'll have exercises there that you can reference in order to keep your body at its healthiest when you aren't able to keep up with regular appointments. Now, What Chiro do you know that does THAT??

Yet again, a great experience at Jochen Chiropractic!

Don't let the website fool you, Jochen Chiropractic has been long serving the many celebrities that reside in Beverly Hills.  Jochen just recently invented a product called the Stress Roller, which has worked wonders for me.  The size of two tennis balls encased in neoprene (wet-suit material) that you roll up and down your spine as you lay on the ground.  Gets out all your knots and feels great! Perfect for in between appointments

From my first visit, after an arm-break fall at age 7, I have been seeing Dr. Jochen and Dr. Stephen Jochen ONLY.  I'm the kind of person that doesn't give her spine away to just *anybody*.  With the exception of a few years I was traveling or across the US for school... Dr. Jochen has seen me and kept me aligned for...nearly 20 years now.  Scary.

I would, an often do, recommend his office to those looking into Chiropractic work.  He's honest, knowledgeable and offers comparable prices.. considering you're among Beverly Hills celebs that also frequent his office!
