Pike Family Nurseries
Category: Nurseries & Gardening
Neighborhood: Buckhead
I went to Pike again for a wreath this year, because year after year they have the greatest selection in town. Nothing is ever picked over, everything is completely fresh - no dying greenery here like at *cough* Home Depot *cough* - and there are multiple types of greenery to choose from.
Not only is their selection better, but the prices are amazing. I used to buy all my greenery from Big John's, but when I discovered the prices at Pike's I knew this would be my source every Christmas.

The new Pike Nursery at the back corner of Lindbergh City Center is AWESOME!!!
Holy Christmas wonderland!!! They have tons and tons of ornaments, trees, wreath, greenery (artificial and mmmm live!), as well as the friendliest people to help you. I wasn't there for five minutes looking at garland before someone came up to ask if I needed help. She explained the differences between the different kinds of garland, gave her recommendation, and cut it for me. I like garland you can buy by the foot, because you can get exactly what you need and you aren't stuck paying too much money for live garland you don't need!
Georgeanne was also the sweetest cashier I've ever met. She was so pleasant and helpful, and offered me paper to protect my seats from all the garland and wreath residue.
Pike also has the most amazing selection of poinsettas. I'm glad I didn't get one at Target because the ones at Pike were half the price and so full and beautiful! Red, white, pink, they've got them all. They even have these little mini poinsettas in tiny little pots for your desk or nightstand.
I know Pike is struggling right now, and I'm sure everyone would love to see this one make it through that, so go to your neighborhood Pike and support a great local business!

Zifty.com
Category: Couriers & Delivery Services
Neighborhood: Midtown
Zifty should take this cue. Instead of telling me an hour and a half - which is already downright absurd in the food delivery world - they should say two, and show up in 1.5.
To top off the distaste I have for Zifty, I know better than to use them on a regular basis. But instead, I use them when I'm sick and really don't feel like leaving the house. A $15 cup of soup and grilled cheese becomes $25 with their pricing, and when it shows up it's tepid at best. Talk about kicking a girl when she's down already, jeeeeez.
Sorry Zifty, we're broken up for good.

Zifty and I have a love/hate relationship. Sometimes I think they're the greatest in the world and then others I am cursing the day they were invented. It's a great concept really, it just needs better execution.
When i am feeling ultra lazy is when I usually give Zifty a call. I can have them bring me dinner AND a cupcake if I so choose. But here is where the hate comes in. They take a long time to arrive, yes. But worse, they are always late and if they're not they show up at the very very end of that "expected delivery" window. I would rather have the expectation set that it's going to take longer and for them to say....show up on time?
Once they finally show up, the food is tepid at best. My Figo pasta is always cold. Nachos from Joe's are always lukewarm. Sushi from Nikimoto's is room temp. I don't know who to blame this on, the restaurants or Zifty, but my bets are on Zifty. I am thinking the restaurant makes the food right away, thinking they will be there any minute for pickup, but the food ends up sitting there for a while.
But I do love Zifty because their delivery guys are usually not only attractive but really friendly. Who doesn't like a hot guy bringing them yummy food when they're sitting around in their PJs? Where is a man for me like this in the real world?
Particularly in the shoe department - the other night I had a complicated return involving returning a pair of shoes of a brand they do not carry in their store, and buying a new pair from another store since they were sold out online. Let's just say the whole process took about 20 minutes with all the paperwork, calling, and scanning involved but my sales associate didn't break a sweat. She was more than happy to do all the dirty work to get me the shoes I wanted. I thanked her profusely and all she did was smile and say "when you love shoes, you love shoes. I do too, so I understand."
I always receive excellent service at the Bobbi Brown counter and the ladies in the handbag section are so nice it makes me want to buy everything.
Alas, with my meager budget I am stuck trolling the sale sections but when Bloomingdale's has a sale, they have a S-A-L-E. And on top of that, there's always an extra discount whether it's presale, a friends & family event, or an extra 10-30% off depending on the apartment. They don't joke around with the sales here. No "sale" advertising only to find out that there's only 4 or 5 dollars off the price at this place. No way.

I don't like the mall much, but I always stop here. Lots of times its the ONLY place I go in Lenox. I am giving this store this many stars because for women, they have a great selection of pieces that aren't necessarily "mall-esque" but have a unique twist. I like their denim selection here, their C&C California tees, the Juicy Couture (clothes, not those nasty sweat suits), great Marc Jacobs section, and clothes to drool over all day long.
The sales can't be beat, I bought two dresses here last week, one BCBG one Laundry and both of them were originally $400, I scored both of them for $100 each. And if you happen to see something you like, they also do this novel concept called "pre-sale." You can buy it for the sale price, and they hold it for you in the back until the sale starts. Once the sale starts, you go with your ticket and it takes like five seconds to pick up. The most I've ever had to wait was 3 days.
I bought myself a box of macaroons and was convinced I would be able to eat the whole box, but the sweetness kept me at two. If you're looking for a quick treat, I would imagine most anyone would be satisfied with that number. I tried every flavor and just saved the box, eating one a day on my trip until it ended. I would suggest you finish before day three, after that they became a little hard and lost some of their awesomeness.
They also have an awesome selection of chocolates, tarts, cupcakes, biscotti, shortbreads, and even some cake stands and cute serveware.
Summing it up: cute. tasty. must see.
The only problem is that when I went in, that was all they had. Those super small ones. They are more purse size makeup bags than one to hold my everyday essentials/for traveling.
And the lady in the store was on the phone the entire time I was there, so I couldn't really ask her if she had any of them, just in a larger version. Sometimes, even if you're helping another customer on the phone, you just have to ask them to hold one moment so that you can acknowledge the presence of another customer. It's simple retail 101.
I also approach stores like this with a grain of salt, simply because I know the wholesale price of every single item in that store since I'm in the design business. We have accounts at all of those vendors and I know the real price of that $68 wine bottle stopper.
Brookhaven Home has a small, but cute selection, and is worth checking out if you're in the area.

Zoe's Kitchen
Category: Sandwiches
Neighborhood: Buckhead
If I'm coming from Midtown, or wherever, I would probably give it 3. It's a solid lunch option for me though, hence the extra star.
When you work over in this Peachtree Battle/Lindbergh area, you basically have only a few restaurants that are worth eating at. Thus, I bring my lunch a lot. And Zoe's is like something I would make for my own lunch, but infinitely better.
Today I had spinach rollups, which include spinach, feta cheese, sundried tomatoes, and I added chicken, rolled up in a thin flatbread. Served with a side of salsa (umm...ok?) and a side of your choosing, it's a really filling, mostly healthy meal.
I don't understand the salsa...it doesn't really go with the flavor of the rollups. Some greek influenced or maybe a spicy cream sauce would have been a little better.
At under $10, Zoe's will probably go into heavy rotation for my lunchtime spots.
PS I'm kind of worried Gretchen O. has her eye on him.... :)

Savvy Snoot
Categories: Furniture Stores, Interior Design
I've seen everything from Jonathan Adler lamps, a Nancy Corzine mirrored chest, some rustic modern furniture that looks like what Pierce Martin or Bobo Intriguing Objects sells, and light fixtures galore that are worth drooling over.
But the best part is the prices. Are they Ikea cheap? No, of course not...after all, that lamp you've spotted was originally a $700 price tag. Savvy Snoot is selling it for around $150 though. So if you want that designer look without a designer price tag, I highly recommend. If you are looking to furnish your dorm room on the cheap, probably a skip.

Bodies: The Exhibition
Category: Museums
Neighborhood: Atlantic Station
There is a lot of shock value, especially in the fetal section of the tour. What bothered me most about the museum was the lack of staff patrolling the exhibit rooms. There were people talking in what we'll call "louder than outdoor voices", childrens pointing and screaming "dead babies, dead babies!" and 13 year olds doing what 13 year olds do and giggling at everything while blocking the exhibits for those who are truly interested.
It is definitely worth checking out, if you've never seen it, but if you want bang for your buck I would do Dialog in the Dark instead. It's far more interesting and you get your moneys worth.

Toronado has a great selection of beers on tap, so it's definitely a beer bar. I would compare it to the Brick Store here in Atlanta, but more of a dive than Brick Store is. It's not pretentious, it's loud and has a juke box, and it's always a place I enjoy going when I'm out in San Francisco.
