Next door to my favorite bar and second-favorite ice cream shop? Score! Cali homies, this is the spot y'all need to hit up! Posole on Wednesdays, tons of specials, a take out menu with photographs and no prices... Delicious. I love the chuleta because I'm a pork fiend (pork chop with salsa verde).  I've come with vegetarians before and they haven't had trouble with options (tortas, veggie burritos, sopes with no meat). I also enjoy the ultra-bright television playing MTV Tres at full blast. Makes me miss San Diego.

Full House Seafood Restaurant

Their dim sum is cheap and good yes, but don't overlook their dinner menu. Stopped by yesterday on Mommy's suggestion and, although we missed dim sum, Daniel N. was craving Peking duck so we stayed. The dining room was empty except workers finally getting to eat lunch at 3 PM, so we sat in the corner and watched Canto-pop news on the flatscreens.

Peking duck - $24, they gave us the standard plate with skin, mantou, sauce and scallions... as well as all the rest of the roast duck. Sweet! The duck was a little cold and the skin could've been crispier, but flavor was good, not too sweet, just delicious dark meat.

Spicy string beans - Not that spicy, but the skins were blistered and it tastes nice in my mouth.

Whole deep fried fish - I've gotten so good at filleting these! My favorite, but this one was not that fresh (probably not killed when I ordered it) because the bones didn't come right out of the meat. Still yummy though.

Service is not great and these are no lunch special prices. Still, I'd stop by again for duck in the middle of the afternoon.

Yeah the wine was a ripoff, yeah the place is huge and feels like a chain, and yeah, it was a good place to visit with the family. The tour was somewhat educational and entertaining, all the staff was knowledgeable and polite. The grounds and the spot are beautiful, with architecture that makes me feel like I'm on another one of many 4th grade visits to the California missions. I also made friends with an adorable baby, so what's not to like?

What a gem. The family stopped by here, not that hungry, and ended up packing away way too much food due to the incredible smells coming outta the kitchen. We were drawn in by how packed it was for a Monday night. I love the mural on the wall, it reminds me of Craig Thompson's visit to N. Africa in Carnet du Voyage...

We ordered:

Saag Paneer - Delicious. There was a slight char on the paneer that gave it an extra chew.

Chicken Tikki Masala - My sister's favorite, I can't really get into white meat (too dry) but the sauce was the perfect blend of tomato and spice.

Chicken Curry - Incredibly good, a little more spicy than the other dishes. Chicken was tender and the bones were mashed up a little, letting you suck out the marrow.

Lamb Kebab - Kind of dry but good flavor.

Mango and Plain lassis - The first was not too sweet, both were perfect for cooling down mouths.

Naan - Fresh, buttery, chewy, soft, fragrant. DELICIOUS.

Everything was served probably around medium spicy, but it builds up when you're stuffing your face.

Prices were mad affordable, for 5 adults I don't think it was much more than $40. You can serve yourself milk tea and it makes me feel like a baby child again.

The best part, however, was probably when I asked this kid coloring a blue cloud at a table if his cloud was raining and he glared at me in response.

Jim Russell Rare Records

How is it possible that one of, if not THE, most incredible record stores in New Orleans has no reviews?

Located in the Garden District in an assuming building with blocked up walls, Jim Russell's doesn't look like much. In fact, it kind of looks like crap, even after you walk inside: record sleeves strewn across the crown, 12 inches haphazardly piled, crates and crates of unsorted gems stacked precariously on each other. It's cold inside, the roof is leaking, the Food Network is playing, and Denise, Jim's wife, is smoking a cigarette and talking up different needles with a skinny nervous hipster.

Greatest hits are 10 or 12 bucks, 12 inches are generally 3.50, 45s are less. There are tapes, CDs, and a wall lined with amazing never-opened rarities costing in the three-digits.

Daniel and I stopped by yesterday to fatten our meager collection (I left all my records in California... although of course I remembered to pack the record player). We got Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson, the Commodores, the Shirelles, Cash Money Millionaires, Jimi Hendrix, and Billie Holiday... for about $60. Oh, did I mention that for every 2 records you buy, you get a 3rd free?

Well then what're you waiting for??--get your ass moving and pick up some Xmas shit, jazz, R&B, rockn'roll, or whatever else you can pick out from the mess!

Came here last night with my boyfriend after an open bar event a few blocks away. We stumbled our way through the CBD and luckily, Luke had a table ready for us (thank god for flash floods and rainstorms keeping the majority of people home). I'm a fan of the hotel/bank decor, but slippery stone floors and a tipsy rain-soaked me was not a good combination.

We sat at a table and immediately ordered wine and appetizers: the rabbit and duck liver pate and a roast beet salad. My Bellini was great, with the fresh peach really resonating, but Daniel was unsatisfied with his wine (it came in a tumbler like Italian wine... weird).

The pate was the hit of the night! So smooth and rich and buttery, accompanied with Creole mustard, tiny pickles, and 2 fruit relishes on buttery crisp toast. INCREDIBLE. We literally scraped the cute little glass container out. Restaurant August needs to take a tip on pate from Luke because this was seriously superior.

For an entree we shared the moules and frites. Amazing fries, fresh and hot, and a great creamy buttery garlic broth with the mussels (although a few were shriveled and overcooked). At this point we were happily satiated and thus declined dessert... and still, dinner was only $60!

I've come before for the oysters and they are great and ESPECIALLY reasonable for happy hour. Their house microbrewed beers are delicious, although the cochon de lait sandwich I tried before was somewhat dry and bland.

One of my favorite mid-priced spots for a chill delicious dinner. Can't wait to come back.

RUBARB is a community bike project located in the 9th ward, in the back of St. Mary of the Angels church (where Common Ground used to be headquartered). RUBARB stands for Rusted Up Beyond All Recognition Bikes, and began when, after the storm, volunteers began pulling unused bikes out of garbage piles and fixing them up for both residents and volunteers.

It is completely volunteer run and thus is only open Mon. 10-2, Wed. 3:30-6, and Sat. 1-6.

I just picked up my bike and I love it. The selection is obviously small, since it's all donated or found bikes that are fixed up by volunteers, but I got an excellently shitty Columbia 3-speed (now single-speed since it's missing shifters and gears, ha) for $50.

One of the raddest things about RUBARB is their Earn-a-bike program for youth. Saturdays are dedicated to the kids, who come to learn how to fix and build their bikes, learning about parts and mechanics, eating snacks, and just hanging out. If you see a kid biking around the 8th or 9th ward, chances are they got it here.

All the volunteer adults that I've met have been really great, extremely friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. This is not a fancy place by any means. They are always in need of volunteers, art supplies, bike supples, tools, etc., so if you've got any extra resources, put them to good use here!

Chill dive bar, with pool, slouchy 70s basement couches, and a mediocre jukebox. Lots of elderly locals chilling with a beer, mixed with hipsters drinking Hi-life. There are ten millions plaques and trophies stacked up on a wall and the beer is kept in a regular white Frigidaire behind the bar. Seems like an after-work kind of spot to me.

St. Joe's Bar

I don't get the hype. Maybe not so much on Yelp, but I've definitely heard that St. Joe's was the greatest shit ever in some circles I run with (or.. around). Stopped by on a Thursday night to watch the Lakers game and it was mad packed with obnoxious douchebags pushing up against me. What? Okay. I'm sitting on this stool already so why are you pushing me over, asshole. Ended up leaving and watching the rest of the game at home.

Beer selection wasn't bad but the bartenders were way too rushed and it took forever to get a pint, even sitting at the bar. Decor was cool. I like the crazy chandeliers done up in huge oversized Xmas ornaments for the holidays and the ornate Catholic paintings. Prices were fine but too much compared to the Red Door (although this is Uptown).

I might give it another chance but probably not of my own accord.

Huey P Long Bridge

2 star rating

Good lord. One day I will have a job that does not require me to risk my life crossing this rickety piece of shit. The Huey P. Long was built in 1935, according to Wikipedia, and you can definitely tell. They're currently widening the bridge, so from 9 AM - 3 PM, only one lane is open. Mind you, the entire bridge is only 2 narrow lanes on each side (no shoulder, just a rusted pipe fence). What with the trucks taking up both lanes anyway, the train tracks running in between shaking the whole bridge, and the 200 foot drop to the Mississippi that you can clearly see, my morning and afternoon commutes generally have me petrified.

One star for not having to pay a toll, though, to get to the West Bank. Another star for.... luck... let's pray these poles can hold me up until they finally finish the widening project.
