I recently joined the Y to swim and workout. My previous review of their swim lessons still stands at one star but the facility itself is pretty good. Their pool deserves five stars (and the main reason I joined) - clean, warm, and there is always a lifeguard around. I think they could use a bigger cardio area but most of the machines are pretty new and I really liked being able to look out unto the park while I workout. Overall, though, the facility is showing its age and they really could use some fresh paint and various renovations. The locker room is especially ancient.
This review is for the YMCA's private swim lessons. If you're an adult who wants to learn how to swim, avoid this YMCA that is unless you enjoy being treated like you're an inconvenience and a pariah. I never learned how to swim as a child. A couple of months ago, I decided to muster up the courage to attempt swim lessons. I walked into the YMCA ready to sign up. Three bored employees sat at the front desk ignoring me and talking to one another instead of helping me (this should have been my first sign to run away and run away fast). After a few minutes, one of them finally figured out that since I wasn't going anywhere I must be needing some sort of help. I told the employee that I'm interested in adult swim lessons and wanted to sign up. He was surprised that the lessons were for me and not a child but handed me an "interest card" and told me that someone will contact me to schedule them. A few days passed and then I received a voicemail from a young woman about scheduling my lessons. I returned her call and left her a message. A few more days passed and nobody called me back. I called the YMCA and spoke to their aquatics director. After repeating my situation several times (I'm an adult, I'm available these times, I want to take this number of lessons), he took down my information and said he'd call me back once he found a time both the instructor and I were available. He was surprised when I mentioned to him that I don't know how to swim (hence the need for the swim lessons) but assured me that he knew "exactly" the appropriate instructor for my beginning needs. He called me back a few hours later and we scheduled 8 lessons at 9:45 AM on Saturdays.
I go to the YMCA on Saturday at 9:45 AM (the time they assigned me) and explain to the front desk that I'm there for a swim lesson. A few minutes later, the instructor arrives while still talking on his cell phone. Based on his phone conversation, I gathered that there is some sort of issue with my lesson. He informs me that masters swim is going on at this time and we cannot use the lap pool for the lesson so we must reschedule. I asked him if we could use the kiddie pool since it appeared empty and I don't know how to swim at all. He was shocked that I don't know how swim, apparently he had not been informed of my skill level. I get in the pool and he stands on the side and asks me, "Do you want me to get in with you?" Ummm, I don't know how to swim at all, what do you think?!? He rushes off to change because he wasn't prepared that he would have to get in the pool for a swim lesson (imagine that!). I spent the remaining part of the lesson learning how to kick with a kickboard, in the hopes that this activity will somehow eventually lead me to learn how to do the freestyle. At the end of the lesson, we rescheduled lessons 2 - 8 for 8:30 AM on Saturdays (so as to avoid the masters swim and have access to the lap pool). Lesson 2 comes around and it was actually fine - more kickboard laps but now in the lap pool. During both lessons, the instructor (who is probably 18 or 19) spent a lot of time chatting with the lifeguards. Even though doing so takes away from my lesson, I let it go. Lesson 3 comes around. I arrive at the YMCA at 8:30 AM (on a SATURDAY of all days). I inform the front desk about my lesson. They seem confused and apathetic. I wait a few minutes, no sign of the instructor. After about 20 minutes (into a 30 minute lesson), the instructor arrives. He insincerely apologizes for being tardy. At this point, it is almost 9 AM, which is when master's swim starts so we don't have a lane at the lap pool so he instructs me to get in the kiddie pool (which I did). After a few minutes, I was told that we'd have a lane at the lap pool so I got out and got in the big pool. After another few minutes in the lap pool, a woman came over and yelled at both of us for being in the pool and that the lane would not be available for my lesson (being that the lap pool was going to be used for the masters swim). I then had to go back to the kiddie pool. And that's when I had it with the YMCA.
It sucks to walk in to a facility needing assistance and not getting it. It sucks when a facility seems incapable of returning calls or scheduling lessons at appropriate times. It sucks to have an immature instructor. It sucks to have an instructor who is late. It sucks to have an instructor who is unprepared for teaching a student at their skill level. It is unacceptable to make anyone feel shamed for seeking help with a problem that they want to remedy. It is even more unacceptable when an organization can manage to fail at so many levels in one experience. EPIC FAIL.
On the plus side, they did refund me for the remaining five lessons (I still had to pay for those awful 3 lessons) and their aquatics director was extremely apologetic for my experience.

The main problem with this hotel tends to be the service. It really is hit or miss. Half of the staff seems super attentive, while the other half seems rather indifferent and it seems worst at the restaurant. For one meal, I had to wait well over 15 minutes before anyone came by to take my order and the place was pretty empty. On my last night, I had to switch rooms because there was a giant ant infestation in my bathroom (due to all the rain). It was gross & inconvenient and they were apologetic but it took about 20 minutes before a bellman came up. When you're freaked out about an army of ants taking over your room, you want to move rooms now! Not 20 minutes later!
Overall, it was a really nice place & I'll probably stay there again the next time I'm in Santa Barbara.
