This is an old building with REALLY thin walls...how thin? When my next door neighbor talks on her phone, I can hear the details of her conversation. It is necessary to speak in whisper tones when inside your apartment - unless you don't mind your neighbors hearing your personal business. And forget about playing any music. The sound goes right through the walls and is super annoying to your neighbors.
The apartments are nicely laid out and the rooms are situated in a manner that will block out most of the neighbor's noise, IF the neighbors close doors to bedrooms/kitchen and talk in the living room. If you have mature, responsible neighbors, the noise issue can be worked out.
I'm living next door to a family of four. They are in a one bedroom apartment. The parents go back and forth to Iran and sometimes leave the college-aged kids alone. The kids have parties 3-4 nights a week with very loud talking until the wee hours of the morning. I call security. Security asks them to be quiet. They are quiet for 20 minutes...then start again...then I call security again...
Resident Services are lame. They are ineffective at responding to your needs. If you have a noise complaint (which you will), you must go down to their office to complete a "complaint form"...this is great if you have nothing better to do during the day. Why can't I fill this form out online?
Maintenance is the best (provided that residence services can get the message to them that a resident has a maintenance issue). I typically have to put in 2 calls before I see someone from maintenance. When maintenance arrives, they are professional, courteous, and do the job right on the first time. Even though it's an old building, the place is very well maintained.
Trash shoot stinks. I would recommend that you do not get an apartment in the hallway where the trash shoot is located...it smells. They attempt to cover up the foul smell with a time-released deodorizer, but that smell is almost as bad as the trash.
Dog Lovers should live here. The place has a dog park (right outside my window actually) where all the residents take their dogs. I'm not a dog person and am not excited about your dog trying to jump on my leg in the elevator. Seems like most people have 2 dogs here.
The location is great with easy access to the 405 and 10 freeway. The parking is great; you get an assigned spot. The laundry room is newly updated and accepts credit cards so you don't need to worry about quarters. The pool area is immaculate and lots of fun year round. There is a bike room for residents (the beach is only 5 miles away!).
Traffic - you can hear it. It quiets down around 10:30/11pm...then starts up again around 6:30 am.
This could be a very cool place to live. Unfortunately for me, I wake up for work at 5:30 or 6:00 am, so I like to get to sleep by 10:30 or 11. Often though, I am lying in my bed listening to my neighbor on her phone or entertaining until past midnight. Sigh. I hear this complaing from other residents, too. There are a lot of college-aged kids living in this building. So the place is more suited for people who don't require a lot of sleep or who are "night owls".
Looking forward to the end of my lease.

Why You Should Read My ReviewsI'm picky
We requested a refrigerator when we checked in and by the time we brought our suitcases to our room, she was in there installing the refrigerator and a microwave! She also brought a humidifier from her home to let us use because Hampton Inn didn't provide them! Talk about above and beyond the call of duty. Carol should be running this place.
Other than that, basic needs were met -- comfy bed, adequate breakfast options (unless you want organic), free wi-fi, adequate business center (for brief use, not staying here as your home office...the connection is slow). Room was clean and not smokey smelling.
My wish is that Hampton Inn would provide organic breakfasts (oatmeal with not salt or sugar added -- let people add them separately if they want); local/organic eggs; local/organic fruit; and water for tea that doesn't taste like it was in an urn that was also used for coffee...come up with that and I'll give them 5 stars ;-)
