Update - 5/2/2010
November 28, 2008 - 5 stars.
May 2, 2010 - 2 stars. (I'm giving them one extra star, for old times sake.)

It's amazing how things change.

Those who have known me since I first joined the site in 2007 know - I used to love Yelp. I truly, honestly loved the site. Back then, Yelp was something more than just a review site. It gave me humor during the day with its entertaining, intelligent threads. It gave me something to plan my weekends around, with its UYEs filled with fellow yelpers whose company I genuinely enjoyed. Just read my prior review, the one I wrote almost a year and a half ago - I REALLY LOVED YELP.

But what's happened to it? Somehow, it has deteriorated to becoming just a resource. I'll admit, it's a useful resource but nothing more. It used to be so much more...

----------

For those wondering why you don't see very many reviews from me compared to before, here's the reason why:

Hi Felicia,

I'm writing because many of your reviews have been flagged by the community, and after evaluation, our Support team has determined that these reviews violate our Terms of Service (http://www.yelp.com/st...).  Personal accounts cannot be used in any promotional manner and the links to your blog that you've included in your reviews are problematic and will need to be removed.

We'd appreciate it if you could remove the promotional links by Monday 3rd May '10. If they are not removed by this date, we'll unfortunately have to remove the reviews.

Please note that you are welcome to post a link in your profile under "My Blog or Website", but links placed within reviews or outside of that space appear as promotional content and are in violation of Yelp's TOS (http://www.yelp.com/st...).

Regards,
Yelp User Support
San Francisco, California

Yes, my reviews have been "flagged by the community" and have been deemed "problematic". I was just trying to keep this yelping thing going, trying to find some way to keep active in this community that part of me just doesn't want to let go, but if you don't want new content, fine - I'll take them down.

So, if you're looking for new reviews from Felicia C., you're probably not going to find them on Yelp. I can't link my blog in this review but do as Yelp HQ says and look under "My Blog or Website" on my profile - that's where you'll find me.

----------

To all the people I've had the pleasure of knowing through Yelp - Thank you for once making this site wonderful.

For those that don't know, I left Yelp three months ago.

Not the "I didn't sign in for three months" kind of leaving, but the deleted account, question-mark orange head for an avatar, click on my profile and get the "This user requested their account be removed" kind of gone.

    *poof!*

    I was gone.

Now obviously, that didn't last very long as I'm writing this review today. But, as I've figured out in the past three months that Yelp is a part of me (as glorious or pathetic as that may be), I'm going to use this review - this review on Yelp itself - to document the pre- and post- Yelp hiatus reviews. (Not that it really makes a difference, but hey! I like being dramatic and Yelp embraces drama, if you know what I'm talking about.)

Why did I leave Yelp? That's a question I'd rather not address. For those that know me, who still kept in touch during my months in limbo, you know why I left - there's no need to spread that news around any more.

Why am I back? I think that's an even more important question.

Yes, I was annoyed at not being able to sort reviews by friends or by total votes.
Yes, I missed not having my beloved 200+ bookmark list at my disposal.
Yes, I was frustrated because I couldn't respond to Talk Thread topics or act as thread police when there were duplicate thread topics floating around.

But what's the real reason I came back?

    Yelp = Real people.

What, did you think I wanted to spend all my disposable income on a 15-course meal? Did you think I wanted to see my gut get bigger and bigger as each month goes by? Nope - as much as spending craploads of money on food and complaining about weight may appeal to some of you, I have to say the yelpers, the real people who I've met time and time again, are what keeps me coming back to this site.

(...Okay, I'm not gonna lie, I have nothing to end this review with. I guess I'll just have to end this review all stupid-like...)

    Yelpers - 5 stars.

    DONE.

1st 8th Annual Grilled Cheese Invitational

Why is it that, for both the LA Street Food Fest (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) and for the Grilled Cheese Invitational, I've had a complete and utter blast compared to everyone else?

Similar to last time, I showed up about an hour before the event started to wait in line. Yes, I still waited in line for an hour, but an hour outside BEFORE the event starts means you get to load up on food before the majority of people arrive (whereas showing up late means you wait in line outside to get in AND wait in line inside for food, with the rest of the masses).

I purchased three sandwiches, one from the Grilled Cheese Truck, one from Chef Greenspan and one from Chef Mark Peel. I didn't mind paying because I would have had to pay for their food anyway (out in the real world that is).

I was a registered judge and got quite a number of tastings that way too - no real problem in waiting. The trick to it was to camp by the fence by the competitors you liked and BE LOUD. I came to realize that the GCI is filled with characters who like energy and banter...talk to them, get friendly and you'll get food like that *snaps!*

In the end, I ate 6 sandwiches by myself, all of which were pretty good. And, I had a great time.

As a final note (and I'll say this time and time again):
IF YOU'RE GOING TO A FOOD FESTIVAL, SHOW UP EARLY WITH A PREPAID TICKET.
If you show up more than an hour after it starts, if you buy your ticket at the door, if you don't prepare...it all goes against you. Food festivals are not something that you decide to drop on by or go to on the spur of the moment. Plan for it and you'll have a good time.

Today was a cereal kind of day at Scoops.

Maple white chocolate with Fruit Loops.
    Toasted rice with Rice Krispies.

I was angry that they ran out of caramel toasted corn with Corn Pops - I would have been all over that like...well...like I am over Scoops normally?

Considering how many times I've been to Scoops, I'm starting to forget what flavors I've tried. So now, I will update each and every time I go to Scoops to chronicle my flavor adventures here.

Today, I also learned a very valuable lesson - don't order two scoops (i.e. four balls) at once. It's too much ice cream for one person...or maybe just too much ice cream for me. I'm full, happy and disgusted with myself, all at the same time.

    Flavors for today:
    - Argan oil = Wikipedia says that argan oil has a "distinctive, nutty flavor"...I agree.
    - Pistachio and sour cream = I loved it, but then again, I always love pistachio flavored ice creams. The sour cream added a richness/smoothness to the ice cream.
    - Butternut squash = Tastes like pumpkin pie filling, but with less spice.
    - Peanut butter and ginger = Too much ginger for me. It was also my fourth scoop of the day (I'm so full!) so I left it more or less untouched.

    NOW I GET IT.

I get all the reviews. I get the Scoops-mania. I get it all.

    Scoops deserves the hype.

Why is it so far away? Why didn't I know about this before?

La Street Food Fest

I honestly don't know what to say to all the nay-sayers out there - I understand your pain but, at the same time, you have to take some things into consideration:

1. If you showed up late, did you really expect to get in? Have you been to a food festival before?

Food festivals are crazy. Whether it be the KBBQ festival, this Food Fest or even smaller events like Jonathan Gold's - you will wait in line. And people will complain about waiting in line. It's just how it is.

With all the publicity and the hype spreading word of mouth, did you not anticipate the crowds that would show up to this event? I expected the event to be packed. Thus, even with my presale ticket, I STILL showed up almost 45 minutes prior to the beginning of the event.

2. Piggybacking off of the above, the lines for food - Again, did you not expect it to be hectic?

People fail to remember that Kogi, when it first opened, had lines 2 hours long and no one really complained (they were just happy they finally got to try Kogi.) Yet, in this situation where the event is planned, they expect to be served immediately. These trucks are working as fast as they can, the same way as they would be out on the streets. If you are willing to wait for them for an hour while they're parked on Abbot Kinney, don't complain about waiting for an hour at the LA Food Fest.

3. For those complaining about them letting people in half an hour later (at 11:30AM instead of 11AM), you probably don't know this piece of info - the fire marshal wouldn't let them open the gates. Did waiting in line suck? Sure, no one likes waiting in a line but it was out of their control (I bet, if they could have let us in at 11AM, they would have.)

I, personally, had a blast. I planned ahead, showed up ridiculously early (parking and tickets weren't a huge problem then) and was able to try all the trucks I wanted, plus some.

Considering this was their first year, I think it went pretty well. Others may argue otherwise but hey, that's your opinion, this is mine.

Apparently, the Hooters Hotel has 24-hour $3 blackjack tables. I mean, there are banners posted against the building outside, there are signs above the slot machines...The Hooters Hotel is supposed to have 24-hour $3 blackjack tables.

My friend and I walked into the Hooters Hotel.
We looked for these $3 blackjack tables.
We circled the casino three times.

THERE WERE NO $3 BLACKJACK TABLES.

One star for false promotions.
(I was looking forward to cheap gambling too!)

It's that time of the year again...That time where I yelp my dinner at my desk because I'm working through the night. Oh the joys of working late!

First off, let me note: I ordered through http://LAbite.com (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) at 6pm and the food wasn't delivered until after 7:45pm. C'mon now, LAbite, our food isn't even cooked!

Secondly, I've decided - sushi isn't as fun if you're eating it from a styrofoam box while you're sitting in front of your work laptop.

That said, the sushi here's okay. I ordered the chirashi sushi which didn't have as much variety as I would have liked and was more expensive than some of the good chirashi combinations I've had in the past (then again, the price may be because we were ordering through an overpriced delivery system). I'll give them credit - the tuna, yellowtail and salmon was pretty fresh. However, I'd prefer not to have anything seared/cooked when I want sushi and my box had more than a couple pieces of seared tuna/some other white fish I couldn't distinguish.

I probably shouldn't be writing any more of this since my experience here is probably going to be way different than everyone elses. I'd be willing to give it another go...but only if the firm was paying again.

As you may already know, I work for The Man. Not just any man, but THE Man.

The Man is mean. He makes me work late from December to April and won't let me leave my desk. Right now, I'm lucky - I get a window next to my desk! But most of the time, I never get to see the sun...

But I really can't complain too much because at least The Man feeds me. And not always from that random place down the street, he feeds me real food! From almost whatever restaurant I want! I just go on http://LABite.com and order food and an hour later (after my stomach has already half-eaten itself in anticipation), food is delivered to my desk! (And then I work some more...)

Honestly, I have no idea how much it costs to order from http://LABite.com. The other reviews say it's expensive or that there's a minimum order but I don't care - The Man pays for it and I get food.

Now back to work I go...

Kingston Cafe

Category: Caribbean
Neighborhood: Pasadena

5.0 star rating

When you try a specific cuisine for the first time, you always hope it'll be good - I hate ignoring an entire range of food because my first experience was not up to par.

Luckily, this was not the case with Caribbean cuisine. Kingston Cafe was my first official venture into that sort of food and let me just say: It was damn good.

Seeing that this was Caribbean/Jamaican food, I had to order the jerk chicken. I mean, jerk chicken seems to define that area - how could I not? My dining companion went in a complete opposite route and ordered the coconut shrimp for herself.

All dinner entrees start with a salad with a mango relish/salsa over the top of it (which was light and fresh and a great way to start a meal) and an order of plantains and some kind of sweet bread (which was also rather nice).

The waitress warned us when we ordered that a mild jerk chicken was still going to be spicy, and she wasn't kidding. Even though it was mild, there was still a spicy burn lingering in my mouth after every bite.  The rice and beans served with the chicken helped tame the flames a little bit, as did trying some of the coconut shrimp.

The coconut shrimp was absolutely delicious - almost wish I had ordered it myself. It came with at least 6 or 7 huge shrimp, covered in a creamy coconut sauce. The coconut wasn't too overpowering and, when you got a bit of that sauce on their buttery white rice, it was pure goodness.

Lastly, one thing to point out - Kingston Cafe has a drink called "Cool Runnings" and I HIGHLY suggest ordering it as you won't be able to find it anywhere else. It's this electric green drink made from cucumbers, ginger and brown sugar and it's absolutely fantastic. (Your first reaction will just be "Wow.")

What a great way to start off my exploration of a new cuisine...

Chabuya Tokyo Noodle Bar

Category: Japanese
Neighborhood: West Los Angeles

3.0 star rating
Update - 9/29/2009
A year ago, I would have claimed Chabuya was one of my favorite ramen houses of all time. However, after my many Daikokuya (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) and Santouka (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) runs, I now see the truth - It's just okay.

Today I had lunch at Chabuya for the first time since I wrote my previous review. I ordered the Zembu ramen, which basically has a little bit of everything (nori seaweed, bean sprouts, chasu, etc.), and an order of pork gyoza.

The gyoza was solid. (And that's all I'm going to say about that.)

Now onto the ramen...The toppings in the ramen were fine - the pork was okay, the bean sprouts were fine, the egg was good. Everything was fine. My problem with the ramen that causes me to bump it down one star is the broth. The broth in my ramen was a little salty and lacked the depth that I remembered it having in the past. Maybe I should have ordered the miso-based ramen again instead, I don't know. I just know that, when it's good ramen, I want to slurp up every last drop. This time, at Chabuya, it was just there to flavor the noodles. Nothing more.

If the portions here were as large as the bowls in Daikokuya (http://www.yelp.c... )...Man, we'd have a problem. I might have to drive out here instead of Little Tokyo and I just can't afford the gas for that!

After seeing the UYE posted for this place and reading about it on rameniac, it boggles my mind that I didn't try Chabuya before. I mean, I went to the Lollicup next door all the time yet never step foot in here! What was I missing all this time? I was missing out on good ramen.

    Damn good ramen.
Too bad the bowls are so damn small.

I ordered the classic with pork chashu with miso and have the following comments/statements:
    - The broth is as meaty as Daikokuya's, and is fantastic if you add the chili pepper to it. My friend says her's was bland and flavorless so I'm thinking the miso added the extra dimension. Either way, I polished off  my broth like that *snaps fingers*
    - I like soft noodles and the noodles here are soft. Some would say they're too soft but I think they're perfect just the way they are.
    - The pork is not as tender as the one at Daikokuya, which makes me sad. I've been spoiled by tender, melt in your mouth pork that when I tried the tough pork here, I was a bit disappointed (but of course, I still ate it).
    - The decor here is very typical LA - the ambiance is really really snazzy for a ramen house, but considering it's located on the Westside, I guess it's understandable.

I don't know about wait times or parking here as I arrived around opening hours for lunch, but from the food itself, I'm definitely satisfied.

    Yum yum yum.
