Wayside Noodles

Why does happy hour end so early at most places? We were walking around trying to find a happy hour place at 6:30 one day, and what did we find???? Wayside noodles. One of the few who don't end their happy hour by 6pm! That's worth a few stars right there!

Okay, so it isn't a fun hang out at type of bar since it is really a restaurant, but you get well mixed drinks for $2.95 each and those bad  boys are strong! You definitely get all of your dollars worth here. And in addition to cheap mixed drinks you can get whole bottles of wine for hardly any money too. Nuts, I say. Especially for someone who lives in Boston now where happy hour is illegal!!!! Yup. Illegal. Go figure, they don't like fun.

They have a mini happy hour food menu too with a bunch of appetizers and rolls that are all only a few dollars and made pretty fresh. One of our rolls was really good and refreshing, but the spring rolls we got were just bland. Of course we ate them since we needed something to go with our strong $3 mixed drinks, but I would stick to the rolls here or I eyed some other people's noodle bowls (not on happy hour price though) which also looked pretty good!

Dive Bar

Sacramento is getting classy. I grew up here, but now only come home to visit my parents, and I had heard about this bar and always wanted to go try it out. So we did during happy hour where they have free hot dogs, chili, cheese, fritos, veggies, and mac cheese! YUP ALL FREE. Strange right? And minus the fact that they had almost twice as many buns as hot dogs, the food was actually okay tasting for being free. They have some cheap drink specials too, but I guess you have to specify the happy hour beer types because we ended up with 22 ounce glasses that were not of the happy hour price we had seen online, so just make sure you specify!

But that giant aquarium about the bar, like Sammy J. said in his review too, really reminded me of disneyland. I felt like I should be getting  into their submarine ride with my beer in hand and going  on an awesome adult version of that ride, looking at all of the cool fish...No sign of mermaids while we were though. I hear they really only come out at night, and happy hour they rarely appear, but maybe one of you out there will get lucky! I think this place should have a mermaid countdown clock or something like that, since that is really the real reason people come here. The fish are really cool though still, and this place like I said earlier, really does make sac-town feel way trendier than it was before, and I hear they have live music here some nights too! Next time I'm back in town, maybe I'll check it out!

If you like beer in a relaxed environment, and especially lots of local beer that all costs about $5 a pint no matter what kind it is pretty much, then this place is for you. But, as my brother Adam G. learned, there is no dessert menu here to go with their dinner menu, but hopefully soon they can get on that! They did say they are working on a later alcohol license right now and having taster flights, so once they have those things, this place will be even better!

They have both booths, bar tables and the bar area and a few TVs making it a pretty chill spot to bring a small group to and  just hang out. Plus they even have a small couch/lounge area too if you want to really feel like a cool kid sipping on beers from all kinds of CA breweries for the most part. And if you get bored easily, they change their  beer menu here tons. You'll see on their walls the taps of tons of types of different beers on velcro it looked like that they switch out from being decoration to actually pouring your beer--a pretty unique idea if you ask me.

Ginger Elizabeth Chocolates

Chocolate addicts unite!! This place is amazing. I only wish it was a little cheaper for my poor stipend budget!

This place was rated as being in the top 10 chocolate places in the US. And after having come here and trying their  caramel filled sea salt dark chocolate morsels of goodness, I know why. It is heaven. Pure chocolate heaven. You can tell that everything is made super fresh here too. Not the biggest store in the world, but it is crisp, clean and modern inside and they have plenty of staff to help out too, yet I hear there is usually a line here, so beware for that, especially with that 5 minute parking spot out front ha ha

They have some of the most unique chocolate flavors too--elderberry, coffee, raspberry....man that list just goes on and on and on and then all of sudden that assorted box of chocolates is empty...That's why you wish the chocolate was cheaper ha ha But all addictions come with a price, and they say chocolate is good for you, right?? heh

Plus they have this amazing sounding Mexican Hot Chocolate so next time I am in sac-town this is what I want! I hear, just like everything else here, it  is perfect and amazingly delicious. Oh Ginger Elizabeth chocolates can you just appear magically on my doorstep right now?

Wilbur Theatre

Before coming to this theater, I was really confused why it had such low ratings. I mean a 2.5 star average is pretty bad...And after coming her, it wasn't an amazing experience, but it wasn't two star worthy either. I came for the Tracy Morgan stand up show, so not sure if it is set up differently then than for other types of shows, but the entire lower level is set up with individual chairs all huddled around the smallest cocktail tables ever. Matt J. and his long legs barely fit in the crowded space, but it did make it pretty easy to see who was laughing and who wasn't throughout the show since it was such close quarters! Good thing no one spit while they were laughing or farted for that matter, because you definitely become friends with people in this set up. It is a nice looking theater though, and it looked like if you sat up in the balconies that you got much more room, but it didn't look like table service...always pros and cons!!

But we did have table service were servers would come by to take our drink orders from their full bar which is pretty cool, but also pretty pricey and I wasn't sure if there was any alcohol in my drink for the price that it was, but I was supporting our economy, right??

Then, don't be alarmed when you use the bathroom downstairs after a late show, because downstairs turns into a loud crazy club at night!! I opened the door just to go down the stairs to pee, and that club like smell and warmth plummeted me over almost and I had to fight my way through the line of men trying to get into the club in order to get to the women's bathroom. Pretty hilarious, but I guess Club Cure helps this old theater get some extra business?

3.5 stars! I always wish I could do half stars....

This cafe is pretty adorable. I mean adorable. The second you walk in you are bombarded by sensory overload with all of their pastry options, the smell of coffee, the look on the happy faces of everyone sitting at those cute little wooden tables. Plus when you order a latte to drink there they serve them in those giant mugs all fancy style, which just makes you feel warmer inside despite the fact that you are drinking warm coffee drink ha ha

The croissant Kelly D and I split also was pretty good, but for the price for what it costs, I wasn't that impressed. My latte also  wasn't the cheapest either, but I guess you pay for sitting in adorable land, eh? I would still come back here, and I know the SF population likes to support more local cafe spots, and this place definitely is fully supported since literally seconds after we left there was a line almost out the door! So just plan ahead for the wait if you aren't as lucky as we are!

Mario's Bohemian Cigar Store Cafe

I want more places like this  in Boston. It is a tiny little cafe/bar/sandwich shop and supposedly a cigar store too? All of  that packed into one tiny corner shop??

You walk in here and see the big oven to cook their pizzas and paninis and to melt all of the cheese that Kelly D. got on her tuna melt. That oven is tucked into  the bar itself  and when we were there, they had two awesome people working, the guy who worked the bar and made all of our food made sure we were all completely happy with our sandwiches and pizza. Frances S. and I both got panini's, mine with chicken and pesto and sundried tomatoes and cheese all melted and toasted together and Frances S. got their mozzarella panini and we were both pretty happy with them. A little on the small side though for the cost and definitely in comparison to Kelly D's tuna melt which was made open face style, and I pretty much had  sandwich envy with that  one ha ha Kat got one of their sausage pizzas and she also seemed pretty darn content.

A nice quaint little bar and lunch spot that if you happen to be walking around this area, I know the people here will treat you like they are your friends.

Nick's Crispy Tacos

Taco Tuesdays with red velvet looking walls and giant chandeliers hanging from the ceiling? Sign me up for that!

Yup, they have $2 tacos on Tuesdays here, and it is so  popular that you pretty much need a table reservation in order to have somewhere to sit, unless you get here early enough to grab a spot at the bar. They are 2 hour reservations, so if you are smart, have one person reserve one table for 2 hours and then a second person reserve another table, and you have one one full taco tuesday fiesta. But be sure to order your tacos earlier rather than later, because there is a separate taco order line that gets really long really really quickly. And if you get your tacos nicks style one tortilla is crispy fried inside the other and it is topped with a mountain of guacamole. Mmmm that taco full of that chicken and the other one I got full of their asada was super tasty.  Brought taco tuesday to a whole new level.

But watch out--if you stay too long here, I was told this place turns into one mean 18 and over club!

King of Thai Noodle House

Feeling poor living in San Francisco?? Well King of Thai has you covered since literally all of their draft beers are $2 (and that includes things like pyramid heffe!!) and almost everything on their menu is $5!!! (minus some seafood items which are a whopping $6 or $7 ha ha)

Yup, this place is huge too. During the week for lunch you are pretty much guaranteed a table for your work group, and they have TVs here to catch your fav game too. Because who doesn't like watching a little football while drinking $2 beers on their lunch break, right?? And I was told that later in the day their upstairs opens and it is like bar heaven up there, because yup, those $2 drafts continue all day long. It is like the definition of happy hour in a restaurant that never ends!!! How beautiful is that?

And the food is actually semi decent too, event for 5 bucks. I got their thai yellow curry with chicken and steamed rice and I was more than full when I finished it and it was actually pretty flavorful too. I did ask for it spicy and it wasn't as spicy as I would have liked it though, so good thing they had that super tasty and addicting hot pepper sauce for me to toss in :-) And Kelly D. ordered these fried taro root fries that were also pretty tasty too. All in all, looking to save money but need to eat out, King Thai is that kind of royalty.

And who said healthy vegetarian food can't be tasty???

Life Alive, not only did I have trouble not staring at your huge collection of fresh ginger root stacked on top of each other in your refrigerated fresh veggies section (seriously, I have never seen so much ginger, even at whole foods!!) but your inventive menu actually made it so so difficult for me to even choose what to order! Matt J. always has trouble deciding, but I usually can pretty easily, and here with all of the fresh salad and wrap  and bowl options, my brain just couldn't decide!

Oh ya, the names of your dishes are awesome too. I got the Swami (how cool is that?) which was a miso curry sauce on top of roasted almonds, raisins, onions, greens, broccoli flowers, shredded carrots all served over tasty tasty brown rice. It was so so good! So much flavor, served warm, and it came in such a cool looking bowl too when you each there. There are tables upstairs and downstairs, and for Cambridge that is hard to find! Semi affordable fast healthy food with seating! Hooray! Okay, it isn't as cheap as I would like it to be--on average you are going to spend $10-12 and it is an order at the counter place--BUT it is mostly local organic stuff all made to order. Plus just eating in here feels almost like you are eating in mini forest--so colorful everywhere, you just have to feel happy here. So glad this id down the street from me!!
