It hurts me to be writing this review for a place that is seems so nice inside....But....when you are somewhat hypocritical on your whole "hospitality" idea it makes me a little wary....

I went to this venue for an event for a group that paid to rent it out. Granted this group had under 21 year olds in it so when events take place at bars the venue always has to be closed to the outside public. WELLLLLL Sagra said it would be closed, but regretted to inform us that people who stayed late eating or drinking at the bar could not be kicked out. Even after it was explained that there were 30 year old MEN at the bar drinking while 19 year girls were over on the other side of Sagra dancing, and how inappropriate that sort of situation could become, they merely said, they believed in "hospitality" and therefore couldn't kick people out, no matter what--not even to avoid 30 year old men checking out 19 year old girls....interesting view of hospitality. Maybe we should have told them that the word hospitality also refers to new clients!!! And the way we were treated when trying to find a resolution to this problem was no where near hospitable. I honestly don't think I could recommend this place being rented out again, especially when you combine this with a rude door man who constantly yells at you....

So Sagra, you really are pretty inside, and you are definitely a gem in the davis square for that reason, but the pizza i tried of yours combined with this whole issue around "hospitality" just really brought me down....All clients or customers should be valued, especially ones paying with a contract to rent out the space. It doesn't take brain science to figure that one out.

Kelly's Diner

Steak and eggs for $7.99 that makes my dad almost forget about his steak from Morton's??? Yes, Please!!

Honestly, this 50's style diner is worth getting up and picking your dad up from the airport at 5:30am. Because that's right folks, this place is open at 6am!!! And they only serve breakfast and lunch, so ya gotta get here early! They close by 3pm!!

Trust me though when I say, that if you like cheap diner breakfast food, and honestly I don't know how you couldn't because it is glorious, Kelly's Diner is your match made in heaven. There are even juke boxes on each table you can put a quarter in and choose a song to play! Just like the olden days!!! And the booths and floor and overall decor all inside of that old 50's style caboose looking exterior, this place just makes breakfast that much more fun and wonderful.

The service is great--our coffee cups full of some of the best diner coffee i have ever had were never empty! And the food was the perfect way to wake up our tastebuds! Their blueberry pancakes were fluffy and moist and delicious, even if you have to squirt syrup on them from what looks like a recycled ketchup bottle ha ha At least Kelly's is saving the world by doing that. And my dad was in heaven with his steak and eggs. 8 ounces of pretty darn tasty steak topped with A1 sauce made my dad almost want to fly all the way back from CA again to come and eat here again! And Matt J. got their house specialty corned beef hash, which according to the video on their website (yup, they were on diners and drive ins!! that awesome show on foodnetwork! ha ha) is a family secret recipe, and it was definitely up there in my corned beef hash book.

Three of us eating huge breakfasts with unlimited coffee all for around $25??? Yup, I hear you getting your keys right now to drive to kellys! :-)

$3.25 for good beers on tap??? Meaning not PBR! Sign me up!!!

Ya gotta toss your hat up in the air for Harvard having their own bar on campus in a somewhat unmarked location underneath what kind of resembles a church ha ha Plus they even have their own beer that they've started brewing recently here, which is maybe just another way for Harvard to be elitist, but hey, that brew is actually pretty tasty!!

This bar of course has books and random equations written on walls in order to create that whole smart sensation of harvard throughout the bar, and even in the women's bathrooms there are chalkboards on the walls which I can only see as being used by students when they have some mathematical equation aha moment and absolutely have to write it down somewhere (and I'm sure for girls that happens all the time while they're in the bathroom, right?? The funny thing is, that they don't have chalkboards in the boy's bathrooms, so I guess even though men claim the toilet is their thinking throne, they don't think enough in the bathroom at queenshead to deserve a chalkboard!!!)

You will definitely feel like a college kid here though. Even though a lot of grad students come here, overall, especially on certain nights, that typical college bump and grind music is blasted over the speakers, and if you do happen to feel a bit too old for the crowd, there is no hard alcohol here to help you get over that feeling heh.

Mashed potatoes for breakfast??? Ya....Shauna D. and I tried it, but really more of a dinner item I would say....

That would really be my only real negative aspect for this small, local breakfast joint. We went here on a Thursday morning  and there were only a couple other tables with people at them, so we got to sit right away. The beverages are self serve, which you don't see every day, but hey I guess it makes the job easier for the servers? This place is pretty small, so not sure why the servers need extra help, especially when they don't find the time at the end of your meal to pick up your credit card to pay!! ha ha

BUT food wise, my corned beef hash was pretty darn tasty. And after I started eating it, complete with my eggs over hard on top, I saw that almost every person around me had some version of the corned beef hash as well! I almost felt like I was part of a secret corned beef hash cult!! It was some of the freshest tasting corned beef hash I've had, and for only bout $8-9 it was a steal for how full I felt the rest of the day! Oh and get your english muffin grilled if you get one here. Never actually thought about doing that before, but it was awesome!! Definitely stealing that trick for home :-)

Shauna D. got the Western Omelette, which we thought was funny because it really was like a denver omelette, but maybe now that I live all the way over in Boston, anything Denver distance and over is considered Western ha ha The eggs were not overcooked, which is always a plus for me, but that brick of grilled and there were plenty of peppers inside, so definitely an egg party!!

All in all, skip the brick, even though I guess if you come here for the first time someone in your group should order it, but you should all share it because the garlic in that bad boy will definitely attract some attention!!!

SURF AND TURF EGGS BENEDICT WITH LOBSTER AND STEAK

That is really all that anyone should need to write about anywhere in order to get you to go somewhere, so I really should stop writing now, but again, let me remind you what they have here...surf and turf eggs benedict special or just lobster benedict and a seafood lobster bisque style soup!! And coffee while you wait to get your table, since you know a place that has lobster, steak and eggs will make you wait a little while until you are seated. But they say there is joy in anticipation, and trust me when I say that it is so so so so worth it to wait and try their delicious seafood brunch options here.

The one thing to avoid, which we were actually somewhat disappointed in was their granola encrusted french toast, which sounds awesome I know, especially when paired with fresh maple syrup which yes you have to market price for, just like the lobster ha ha but the french toast was a tad bit dry and just not too flavorful overall. It was not the best choice. I mean how could one even choose to order bread over lobster anyway??

This is a great brunch spot, but definitely come early because the wait can get VERY long here on Sundays especially. It is in an old style house with a couple tables on the first floor, but the rest upstairs in an overall very quaint, very brunch appropriate atmosphere. And I mean really, in case I haven't said this enough yet, any place that serves lobster eggs benedict naturally makes that venue way way better in my book!!! Lobster all day long would be my motto if I could afford it!!

Ya gotta love bars that when you walk past them you would never know it was a bar from the outside. There is something about walking into what you feel like is an invite only party, when really all it is, is a small bar, but a small bar with lots of character!!

The drinks here could be made a bit stronger in my book, but once you have a couple there are all kinds of things on the walls and especially in the tiny tiny bathrooms for you to entertain yourself with! All kinds of posters and art....

BUT the food is where Matt J. were a little disappointed. It was pretty pricey for a dive bar. We took our waitress's advice and got their special carne asada steak tacos since she said they were amazing and we had been craving steak earlier that day, but when she brought them (about an hour later it felt) those tacos were really the size of my pinky!! And there was nothing on the side either!! Just two tiny tiny tacos....and it was a $13 meal too!! I mean come on...I lived in LA for two years and had my fair share of overpriced mexican food, but Delux...there is NO WAY you should have charged that much for those tiny little tacos unless you actually had them flown in from mexico and had to pay their non-stop airfare!

So Delux, you are lucky that Matt and I thought the vibe and ambiance and the fact that you look so darn secretive pushed you back up to three stars, because disappointing tacos just hurt my heart and my wallet in this case!!

Black Horse Inn

4 star rating

This place literally has a black horse statue out in front of it! How perfect for its name!! I love it when places do things like that!!

This inn is the perfect place to stay for anyone looking to take a trip up to Maine as a way to take a break from the busy city life. The prices for the rooms are around $100 a night, but it includes breakfast which definitely has more options of cereal and toast and bagels than I am used to! And fresh squeezed oj too!! And your room is huge. It even has a small fridge and counter space and things like that in case you want to stay a while and want to have some of your own food in your room.

Granted the walls in some of the rooms here can be pretty pink and girly, but we all thought that it added to the overall charm of this country style place. It is owned and run by a cute little  old couple who you can tell just loves the inn business. They also have free wifi here! And free parking! And a pool for when it is warmer!!! Plus they are right up next to camden hill state park and some other hiking trails, so for those of you who like hiking or snowshoeing this is an awesome place to stay!! There are huge, grassy meadows lined by forests of trees all around this inn, and right up the road are a couple restaurants and the waterfront!!

You kind of just feel at home when you stay here, and we wish we had stayed there for longer than just one night, but the joys of weekend getaways only last so long! But Black Horse Inn, if I am ever up near Camden or Lincolnville again, I will definitely be staying with you!!

TATER TOTS! TATER TOTS! TATER TOTS! TATER TOTS! TATER TOTS! TATER TOTS! TATER TOTS! TATER TOTS! TATER TOTS!

Yes, that is the reason you come to Lower Depths. Their beers may be a bit on the pricey side, their bar is not the biggest of them all, and their music may be a playlist on some random server's ipod for the night (yes, that means you hear some way random and not always good throw backs here!!), BUT they serve tater tots on the side of their sandwiches here, and a MOUNTAIN of tater tots as an app to share. And my god, that is the highest amount of tater tots I have ever seen in life pretty much. I don't know if Costco would even make that many at one time to hand out in their free samples! Especially topped with all of the various toppings here!! Mexican style looks so so good....

I must go back to try and tackle one of their mountains o' fun, but at a minimum get tater tots on the side of your burger (which are fine, but nothing too amazing), and just ignore the desire entirely if you want the fish wrap--it is not as much food, and there is hardly any fish in it, and what there is has no flavor at all, so thank god for the tater tots in that combo!!!

And watch out for $7 pints of beer too....we weren't expecting that one on our bill, but at least we had the happiness still running around in our bodies because we got to relive our glory days as kids and eat tater tots!!!! (which means we almost ignored how pricey the beers were....but not quite ha ha)

Any place that lets you play uno, battleship, monopoly or any other amazing board game while drinking, deserves three stars. That is just awesome. Plus, this place supplies the games too!

Definitely a big typical English pub--really nothing too special other than how big it is for being on the street across from the Kenmore stop. There are pool tables and a big bar and darts...

BUT this place when you first walk in just smells badly. And by badly I mean kind of like pee....ya....not so great for putting you in the mood to kick some butt on uno!! Just get a drink (their mixed drinks come in pint glasses here which is a total plus) and then soon enough you won't smell that pee smell too much longer....that is if your wait staff person ever brings you your drink--service is a bit on the slow side, but maybe that is because they were smelling that urine smell all night--that would make me operate more slowly too!

But the smell aside, the drinks are strong, the beers are always from fresh taps and I hear that the food is actually pretty tasty here. It is a laid back pub to stumble into after a game or while you kill time until that last T train of the night (dumb boston for having the T close so early in the first place!!) and at least with the strength of the drinks here  you will end on a high note!! And you will end on a double high note if you manage to beat me at Uno, because yes, I just am that good at that game. :-)

Yelp Elite Brunch at Rattlesnake Bar

Category: Local Flavor
Neighborhood: Back Bay

5 star rating
 11/9/2009
I was tempted to give 4 stars as well, since I think that the Rattlesnake wasn't quite prepared for the storm that is Boston Yelpers to take over their lovely establishment, but those bar tenders were working so so so so hard, that they were almost sweating!! And that dedication along to making all of us those free drinks is worth a 5 star rating.

There were three types of drinks and the eastern persuasion with that kiwi mixture of heaven was the best by far!! That delicious drink was almost too easy to drink for an early brunch event! ha ha And the Procesco Sparkling Wine with some OJ is just the perfect way to start off any Sunday in my book. Yelpers, can we do this every sunday?? ha ha

So thanks to Leighann and her awesome team of fellow yelpers arranging this event! It is obvious that their new chef here at Rattlesnake, Chef Brian Poe, has a great new menu for this bar!! So I have high hopes in Rattlesnake becoming one of the classier options for brunch in the near future!!

That green chili corn bread was phenomenal. I could pretty much eat that all day long. Especially if I could alternate those bites with those spoonfuls of crab goodnees!!! Crab at brunch is a must, and Rattlesnake you delivered!

And breakfast tacos??? You know how to sing to a CA girl's heart in Boston!!!
