I stayed at the Vendue Inn for New Years Eve, where we had a King Suite with jacuzzi. The building(s) are beautiful and the location can't be beat. But I found our room pretty dated and in need of an update. I was especially disappointed with the bathroom, which looked as though it was remodeled in the mid-80s.
They got the big things (bed, tv) right, but still need to work on other upgrades before I'd stay here again.

What a strange, strange place. It's like Disney meets Vegas meets the Hampton Inn. I stayed here in December, and the entire first floor was transformed to a holiday extravaganza with everything from Santa to Shrek (seriously).
I liked the two bottles of free water in my room each day, but the hotel restaurants were just horrendous (with no healthy options). The beds were comfy enough, but the advertised wifi was down the entire trip. Since I was here for work, that made my stay challenging.
Overall, I found this place too big and impersonal, lacking any sort of charm or personality.

A delightful little sushi restaurant with lots of energy in a charming part of town. We ordered family-style and finished everything, ordering more until they closed the kitchen.

Haute cuisine with fantastic service. I had the homemade pasta with truffle and espresso powder. I was pleased by the uniqueness (and frankly size) of the dish.
But the atmosphere and decor was dreadfully tacky and dated. Not in a cute, forgivable way... but it's like it was designed by the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
My review would be a 3.5, but they do have free valet (a rarity), so Tristan earns a 4 in my books!

Kitschy little italian restaurant in a strip mall in a Charleston suburb.
I've eaten here twice. Both times we had great service, and were seated right away. But neither time did I walk away excited about the food.

I love this place for three things:
(1) the lobster roll, which has a roll as delicious as the lobster
(2) the fresh cucumber salad, a refreshing treat on a hot day
(3) butter, and the corn on the cob to which it accompanies
And they also allow dogs on the porch, which is great for dog owners and fans alike!

I wasn't expecting much from this strip-mall take out restaurant with rental magazines stuffed near the doorway.
But this was some of the best Chinese I've had in a long time. And I work in San Francisco's Chinatown neighborhood!
I had the moo shu veggies and chow fun -- both vegetarian. They were better than most take-out places, and far cheaper. I'll be back!

As if the fluffy rolls topped with sea-salt were not enough, they paired it with a soft honey-and-duck-fat-butter. I don't usually eat meat, but I could eat that butter with a spoon. Or better yet, with their dinner rolls.
Everything we ordered -- from appetizer to dessert -- was excellent. I'll spare you the dish details; these guys change their menu daily.
In a renovated Queen Anne home, the interior is upscale yet cozy. Our waitress was kind and attentive, modifying our orders with a smile.
My review is actually 4.5 stars, however. My one gripe is the dearth of vegetarian options.

It's in a charming house on a charming street. And the outdoor patio is the definition of charming. But our server could've used a course in charm school. I expected warm, southern charm with a smile... and instead got a slow, impersonal transaction.

Find Me Ina party dress
We made the reservations a few days before, showed up, but it didn't work out. Apparently their online system is not synced with their front desk, and they overbooked.
And while it still blows my mind that this can happen in 2011, they did the right thing. They were kind and apologetic. And they booked (and paid for) us to stay at another nearby hotel.
I'd still like to stay here someday.
