Naan & Kabob

Category: Persian/Iranian

5.0 star rating

Whoever wrote "hells freakin' yeah to the max" down there is hells freakin' right. I must get at least a weekly fix of N&K. It is that addictive. I'm not claiming to be an expert on Persian food but N&K is just so GOOD, I can't imagine it gets much better than this.

The lunch specials are your best bet. The chicken barg is plump, tender chunks of chicken breast seasoned with magic. Chicken koubideh is tasty ground chicken. The soltani gives you BOTH, along with fluffy basmati rice and a roasted tomato - mix that nice and good into the rice with a squirt of lime and sprinkle that special spice thing over the whole plate. Also, it comes with salad or soup and naan with butter and half an onion.

The beef soltani is also delish. As is the fish kabob. I need to get around to trying the rest of the menu.

Cream Pan

As if this place needed anymore reviews. Oh well, here are my favorite favorites at my favorite OC bakery:

- Boston donut: Custard-filled and dipped in chocolate glaze. The custard is never too sweet or cloying. It's perfect.
- Gruyere boule: Love this for breakfast. Or lunch. Or an afternoon snack.
- Lemon poppyseed cake: They don't make this anymore, though I keep bringing it up every time I go there in hopes that they'll bring it back. It's bursting with poppyseed madness! Yum.
- Strawberry croissant: Duh.

Tip: Come early! Cream Pan in the morning is what heaven surely smells like.

Chicken Bowl Express

I really like Chicken Bowl Express, and am quite fond of the curry. The "regular" size, which is the smallest size, is actually a pretty decent-sized portion. It easily fills me up and I even have some left over. The beef curry consists of chunks of steak, carrots, peas and onions, poured over rice. It's plenty.

Another favorite is the kung pao chicken. I've also heard that the garlic chicken and orange chicken bowls are tasty, although, I usually just go for the aforementioned choices.

I agree that perhaps it needs a little livening up, but this place serves some pretty solid food, which is made to order and is very affordable.

Give it a chance! I'd love to see this place stick around, especially during these rough times. Plus the owner is super nice. He reminds me of a kind uncle.

This place just plum confuses me. And I write that with the best of intentions.

At first glance, the menu doesn't seem all that special. Basic turkey sandwich here, tuna salad there. It makes you think, "Pretty standard, simple stuff -- lunches I can make for myself at home." But don't be fooled:

This place is SO good, and I still don't really understand why.  Why does this avocado sandwich, with jack cheese and sunflower seeds, taste so damn good??? How is this chicken walnut salad, dressed with just green onions and mayo, the best chicken salad ever?? Is the egg salad laced with some secret magical drug??

I suppose it just all goes back to really fresh ingredients. Still. Mind-boggling.

Yogurtland

Ok, I must have been blind, because I completely missed the fresh fruit toppings! I'm so sad now.

Tonight was my first visit, which was long overdue. I am in love with froyo, and I very much appreciated the long list of flavors and "eco-friendlier" plastic cups.

It was hard to decide; there is the plain, tart "Pinkberry-esque" flavor, blueberry (which is also tart like the plain), mango, green tea (creamy and not tart -- not sure how Pinkberry's is), cookies and cream (really quite pleasant), NY cheesecake, strawberry, chocolate, vanilla, banana, peanut butter, sugar-free chocolate, strawberry banana, pistachio, coconut, coffee/mocha (something like that), and... I think that's it. My recommendations would be the first five, but you should get a bit of each flavor if you fancy, since you can.

I didn't get any toppings, because I failed to notice the apparent fresh fruit ones, and by the time I was through with the yogurt spigots, I had filled my cup to overflowing. You rack up ounces pretty fast... but it's worth it.

Update 4/8/08:
After sampling a multitude of froyo places over the past several months, I realized I was just a little hasty in giving so many stars. Yogurtland's still great, even if rated solely on variety, but the yogurt texture/consistency is not as creamy and fluffy as other places.
