Hole in The Wall Restaurant

Hole in the Wall is right. This charming little place is tucked back in a little center behind a Starbucks. It's small just like a "hole in the wall" would typically be. But that is where the commonalities stop.

Hole in The Wall offers American food with a twist from the Dutch, French and a few more. I was surprised to find not only find terrific food, but it was something different than the regular servings in the community. Sebastopol longs for something that is dependable, delicious and inviting.

Service and Atmosphere: Service was plentiful and personable. The owner and chef Adam stopped by multiple times to recommend items and chat about them. His presence and engagement was a large part of the service and ambiance. The additional wait staff were all nice and attentive. The space is sparse of decorations. The walls are clean (white) with a few pieces of fun art. Based on seating and styles, it's definitely casual dinning. Not 5 stars yet based on ambiance/seating. It was good, but not as fitting to the food as I thought it should be.

The Food: The food was all from scratch and a bit unusual. My breakfast companions both had the dutch pancake - a dish baked in a cast iron pan and is reminiscent of a souffle. I had the fun-guy omelet and an out-of-this-world biscuit with sausage gravy. If I could of, I would of ordered a dozen of the biscuits to go. Amazing.

Overall, a good place with wonderful food. I hope business continues to grow and Hole in The Wall calls Sebastopol home for a long while.

Good stuff Adam!

Rosso Pizzeria and Wine Bar

Delicious and a real surprise!

I was in Sonoma County visiting family and looking for a fun place to eat. I wanted something other than the typical haunts I have tried so many times. Luckily a friend living in the area recommended Rosso.

Service and Atmosphere: A friend (visiting the area) and I decided to meet at Rosso on a Sunday evening. Even though they were busy, within five minutes, we had a table and a welcome from the waitress. The waitress walked us through the menu and suggested wine options. The entire evening included the same service, friendly, attentive and very knowledgeable. Note: This place does seem VERY much like Pizza Mozza in LA (owned by Mario Batali). It seems like a borrowed concept. http://www.mozza-la.co...

The Food: The wine choices were perfect for my friend and me. We sampled a red and white, both recommended by our waitress. The fresh mozzarella (made in-house) with prosciutto was the perfect appetizer. It was some of the best mozzarella that I've ever had. We then split a lemon cesar salad with Calabrian chilies. The chili was a nice touch. I had the Funghi pizza while my friend had the Motto Guzzi. She loved her choice as I did mine. My pizza had such unique mushroom flavors. All the food was oh so good.  The only negative on the menu would be unfulfilled dessert space. Rosso offers no desserts.

Location: Rosso sits in a min-mall of sorts. It seems like an off location to me. But on the plus side, there is plenty of parking and is easy to get to.

Overall, I truly enjoyed my evening at Rosso. The staff was so welcoming and the food and wine selection was superb. I will be back when visiting the area again.

Urban Eats

Urban Eats has done it. I've become a regular of this step-above sandwich and salad place.

The Food: Paninis, salads and a few other items. I am personally a fan of the chicken panini and their side order of mac and cheese. The mac is very simple; bow tie pasta in a creamy cheese sauce and it's only 2.95. Since I can have a beer with lunch and a non-typical desert, this place offers a little extra than your regular sandwich shop. In fact, this place doesn't really even fit in that category at all.

Service and Atmosphere: The service is friendly and quick. You order at the counter and the food is delivered to you. Be sure to grab your own silverware. I'd actually prefer they bring it to me. But that's not the end of the world.

Location: This part of Magnolia Blvd in Burbank is being revitalized as Magnolia Park. It is starting to feel a little like Melrose. There is a playhouse across the street, second hand stores, a cupcake place and more. Urban Eats seems to be nestled nicely on a corner with a few spots for outdoor eating. It's a good addition.

Overall, a very good place. Try it out for a Saturday lunch with a friend. Eat, have a beer and do some people watching.

So many yogurt shops in the US. The good news, one is usually close by.  The bad news, none so far. This place is not so different than the rest of the pack, with the exception of the self service portion of the visit.

At first I different love the idea of serve it myself. Once I noticed I could serve myself a wee portion vs. the standard small version at other places, I was instantly excited. The small portions have always seemed too much for my needs. I always wanted to asked for the nonexistent "mini" size. Yay for new options!

I enjoyed a plain tart flavor with blueberries and strawberries. The flavor was similar to Pinkberry. It was the texture that was just slightly different. All in all, a good yogurt. Just a little pricey. Not enough to keep me away. I will be back.

Yummy Cupcakes

A local cupcake place that compares to Sprinkles of Beverly Hills and Magnolia of NYC.

This place is all about take out. You can come in and find a standard set of flavors and original flavors daily. Of course, the Red Velvet is the local favorite.  Yummy also offers a spoonful of frosting, capsules of sprinkles and other add-ons. Just recently, they added an option to order a cupcake decorating kit. Fun for parties.

If you get a chance, try this place. it's a great treat that is a little different than a stop at an ice cream place or Starbucks.

The Waffle

I barely need to write a review for The Waffle since my thoughts are so similar to previous reviews. This place is so mediocre.

I found a good variety in the menu. It appears variety comes at a high price. The food (priced much too high), is nothing more than average. None of my four companions enjoyed their meal much. All of us tried different waffles with sides of eggs, hashbrowns and bacon. Truthfully, I would of rather spent my $42 (for 2 at breakfast) at Eat Well or The Griddle.

How about that service? The staff just like the food, is merely mediocre. It was clear that these people did not want to work there nor help us enjoy a meal. My table mates and l couldn't help laugh at the lack of smiles, acknowledgement, or even a plain "you're welcome", "thank you" from the wait staff.

With the lack of great food and any real customer service, I find no reason to come back to The Waffle.

Tokyo Yakitori

Yakitori is a great local hole in the wall place. It's small, funny shaped and prices are great. I saw someone mention that Yoshinoya was a better option. Personally, I find Yoshinoya horrible. It has a funny taste. But that goes in a different review.

I do not order many other the varied items at Yakitori. I just like the chicken teriyaki too much. You can even ask for no skin on the chicken if you are looking for a healthier version of the dish. I also like the tempura (chicken combo meal). Probably not so healthy.

This is a place for a quick bite or to take home. Don't go for fine dining. It's just simple and easy Japanese food.

Eat Well

Eat Well ... a funky diner of sorts. This location in Glendale is really out of place. The vibe seem to fit the Silverlake area better. Don't get me wrong, I really like the vibe. It has the hipster, non traditional family unit, the gays, and the whoever showed up vibe. This is not Denny's. It fits me well.

My experiences here are only with breakfast. The little coffee cake appetizer they serve with coffee really keeps me coming back. I love it. You will find the breakfast basics plus other unusual items. I love the "Everything but the kitchen sink" dish.

If coming here on the weekend, expect a wait if around the 10am hour. But still, its only about 10 minutes. Well worth it.

Exotic Thai

This is a my local haunt. I am literally a couple blocks away. Don't let this fool you. The food is great.

What will your experience be? You will walk in to find an mix of interior designs. Think, old Thai with Ikea lighting and 80's neon. I know, not really pretty.

But what about the food? The food and service is great. I have tried many dishes and all have been fresh, hot and worthwhile. The wait staff is very attentive and pleasant. The prices are really decent.

With all of this said, I usually get take out. Partly, because it so close to me The other part, it's not super comfy inside.

This place is great for lunch or dinner. Lunch is far busier with work crowds than dinner time. Dinner time, there is never really a wait.

This place has won a few Burbank best Thai place awards for a few years. Overall, you will really enjoy the food.

Sushi Nishi-ya

A friend recommended this hide-away. The location is hilarious. A sushi joint in a small strip mall out of the normal path in Glendale.

This place is very small in size. Especially for LA. It only has a few booths and a small bar. I chose the booth.

The menu is not large. It offers basics....sushi, sashimi, and hand rolls. Cut rolls or anything specialized is not served here. I had various pieces of sushi from the menu. They do offer a chef's special that includes his choices sent to your table until your full. Sounds fun. I will have to try that next time.

The fish was so fresh. It had a great texture and a smooth finish. I really loved that the waitress would indicate where the fish was from as it was served. It added a bit of fresh international flair to the food. In addition to the sushi, I had the miso soup. It was the standard fair. What can you really do with miso soup?

I will definitely come back here. The price was decent and the fish was delicious. This is a very simple place and not trendy at all. Come for the food, not the ambiance.
