Saigon Sandwich

I've had this place bookmarked in my phone for MONTHS, but rarely find myself in the *lovely* neighborhood known as the Tenderloin. On a particularly nice day last week, I decided to enjoy the sunshine and make the trek to Saigon Sandwich.

To get there, I had to partake in the obstacle course of avoiding homeless people asking for money, wailing prostitutes, and urine puddles. Delightful. Once I'd overcome that feat and entered the itty bitty sando shop, I was greeted by 3 super friendly woman who quickly took my order. I got the pork sandwich (for only $3.50!!!), as well as the coconut & gelatin dessert wrapped in some sort of leaf (not sure what it's called). Despite there being a handful of other folks in the shop, the staff was extremely efficient in preparing and ringing up my lunch.

There really is no where to sit at the shop, so I took my food to the Civic Center park to eat with a friend. It was DELICIOUS. Everything from the spice, to the proportions of meat/veggies to bread was perfect. I devoured the whole thing, which left me almost painfully full.

If this was in another 'hood it'd get 5 stars for sure. But for the price and quality, I'll definitely be back regardless of the location!

Beard Papa's Cream Puffs

Being so close to my office, people at work have used these cream puffs as bribery to make their project move up in my "to-do" queue. It works every time.

That light, flaky crust, smothered in chocolate, stuffed with that fluffy cream can't get in my mouth fast enough.

YUMMY!!!

Krua Thai

This is your typical Americanized-Thai food: toned down spice levels, and nothing too abnormal on the menu. Everything I tried was good, but nothing made it any different from the dozens of other Thai joints in the area.

Service was good. The staff was very attentive, and friendly. Ambiance was very chic, and open.

While it was certainly a pleasant dining experience, Krua Thai is not going in my list of favorites.

Such an enormous selection of high quality (and mostly locally made) chocolate! Pure heaven. Displayed near the front of the store, I've always been too distracted by the vast array of bars, tins, and boxes of chocolate to venture towards the back where the magazines live.

Maybe one day my sweet-tooth will take  a break and let me explore their collection of reading materials....

The Garlic shrimp burrito is DELICIOUS. So is the fried plantain & black bean burrito. And the chips/salsa. Now that I think about it, I haven't tasted anything here that I didn't happily devour.

Super nice staff, and adorable small space. But it can get crowded on the weekends, so be prepared to take the food to go. If you're not planning on eating at the restaurant, call ahead to place your order, and skip the line!

The beer-flavored ice-cream affogato I had in the early afternoon left my heart racing till 4am. Now that is some serious caffeine. I should probably go for the decaf next time.

Mojo Bicycle Café

The bike shop here is great, offering reasonable prices, and quick turnaround times. The mechanics are super friendly, and talk to you though anything that needs explaining. They're not the notorious bicycle pricks you find far too often at so many other SF bike shops.

The cafe staff however is another story. While I've had the occasional chipper barista, I'm usually giving my order to a big 'ole grumpypants instead. They take my order, and ask for the cash, but no other communication is spoken. Even if I ask how they're doing, they look annoyed, and their answer is always short. Perhaps the attitude rubs off on some of the other patrons, as I've encountered some severely rude personalities at Mojo's. Especially in the evenings, when they've had a few beers.

Despite this, I'll keep going back. Because I love their patio, lit up with little white lights at night, their late hours (not typical for cafes in my 'hood), and the close proximity to my apartment.

Biergarten

Since this city seems to have a huge lack of restaurants/bars with nice outdoor patios, this place is a little gem in my opinion. With giant tables (that are to be shared with strangers and friends alike) overlooking the small park in Hayes Valley, the Biergarten makes a perfect destination for a sunny afternoon.

After dark, they turn on the hanging lights above. This would give the place a romantic atmosphere, if it weren't for people shouting "chug, chug, chug!!!" around you.

Yes, the line to the bar can get a little long, but use that time to make a new friends with some of the folks waiting there with you. Once you order, don't forget to grab a pretzel or bratwurst basket to go with your with a tasty beverage.

City Skin and Laser Clinic

Categories: Skin Care, Laser Hair Removal
Neighborhood: Union Square

I'd been wanting to do laser hair removal for years, so have done my share of research of places that offered it in the Bay Area. When I came across City Skin on Yelp, they were by far the least expensive laser clinic I'd found, and had so many raving reviews, I figured I'd give 'em a shot.

I'm so glad I did. The staff is so professional, friendly, and quick! I'm always amazed at how fast they are. While laser hair removal certainly does not feel good, it's no worse than waxing. And the ladies here make it as painless as possible for you, always providing some distracting conversation through the entire process.

They offer free consultations if you want to chat with them prior to making a hair-removal appointment. And if you decide to go ahead with a session, they will offer you some wine while you wait - something I highly recommend accepting, as the mild buzz will definitely help with the pain!

I've been SO happy with the results. After using all of the sessions from the packages I initially purchased, I already went ahead and bought more for other areas.

Razors be gone!!! Thanks City Skin!

Sushirrito

Neighborhood: SOMA

I feel like you can't find this kind of stuff anywhere but in SF. And I love it.

Now that the "newness" novelty of Sushirrito has worn out, the line isn't bad at all. And even if there are a few folks in front of you, it moves pretty quickly.

Ingredients are SUPER fresh, and the rolls are tasty! There is no where to sit though, so be prepared to take your food to-go.

The one thing I would change would be to go back to the very first iteration of their menu, as I think the ingredient combos were better back then (Latin Ninja, I miss you so!!!). But, their current menu is mighty fine too.
