8/23/2009
Ate breakfast with Neal E and Sue H today.
Nice ambiance in the restaurant. The decorations strike me as a balance between old western (wagon wheel), outdoors wilderness (moose antler), and homey (Amish-like sayings framed on the wall). The ceiling resembles a micro-brewery or Chipotle (bare and can see the ventilation). There is a breakfast bar off to one side, inside seating in the middle, and outside seating.
Menu is fairly simple. Breakfast is standard omelets, eggs and meat, traditional sides such as hash, biscuits and gravy, etc. Picture in the menu look very good. I am interested in coming back and trying something else for lunch and dinner.
So - how was the breakfast? I ordered an omelet (the cowboy), home potatoes, wheat bread, and I asked for some jalapeño in the omelet. I received what I asked for. The presentation was pretty good. The portion of potatoes was slight (perhaps a quarter potato). The omelet was ample (guessing three-egg), and the toast was way too much (big and thick portions of wheat bread resembling french bread portions).
The jalapeño was sliced and mixed with peppers (green and red) and put in a little side cup vice inside the omelet. The touch was nice and I poured it over the top of the omelet.
While I was eating the omelet, my first impression was the meal was not hot. We did wait about 15 minutes or so for breakfast to arrive. That seems like a long time for egg-based meals as they are fairly easy to put together. The restaurant was not very crowded, so I don't think that had an impact on the wait. The bottom line is my meal was warm and not hot.
I also kept getting a hint of maple in my omelet. I thought that was weird. It was the sausage. Sorry, I don't think omelets are designed to taste like maple (unless it is on purpose). This was a meat and cheese omelet and I was not expecting maple.
Considering this is my first visit, I will return and sample again. I liked the ambiance. The food was OK, but I want to try something other than breakfast. The service was pretty good and the people working the restaurant were very nice.
A good place to go. It is new. Interesting name - along Highway 55.
Lunch was great. I can see why this restaurant holds the top position for Falls Church. This is a very nice place that serves very good food. They are efficient and the place is really clean.
Since the lunch on Tuesday, I have returned here two more times (no kidding). I have brought some other people here and they all remark at how good the food is.
What do I like the best? The menu is diverse and the food is served hot and fresh. The service is top-notch. Best of all - when you eat Thai food, you expect a little heat. My dishes (without asking) came pretty darn spicy. I like heat and the dishes I have ordered got my attention. Very nice.
This restaurant is literally down the street from where I work and I will definitely put them near the top of my lunch list whenever me and my coworkers go out for lunch.
Thanks to Don P for organizing the event and thank you to everyone for showing up. I loved Mikkela's stories. I could listen to more. :)

This is the best secret in Manassas. Don't go blabbing it around or it won't be a secret any longer. The BEST cheeseburgers in Prince William County are right here. At the bowling alley. Better than any other burger from a brand name or otherwise.
I have been coming to this bowling alley for years. Not that I like to bowl - I like the burgers and fries. My typical meal is a cheeseburger, fries and a beer. Pretty simple and always made hot and fresh.
Other new (and welcome) changes are:
1. Bowling alley is now smoke-free. Yeah! Finally!
2. They accept cards now at the restaurant bar (used to be cash only)
3. In spite of the changes - the burgers are still top-notch!
Seriously - you walk up to the bar and order. Lady will take your order and ask what you want on the burger. You pay and find a place to sit. Keep an eye on the bar as your food will be placed there when it is ready. Go get it and enjoy.

Neal E and I have been contemplating this place for a while. The signs in the window say there is 'hibachi' and 'pho'. This is a Chinese place - Korean and Vietnamese as well? Talk about a personality disorder.
I was heading to Pho 234 next door. They closed early for some reason. Then I was thinking about Super Chicken next to that, but I really wanted Pho. I remembered this place and walked over. It was 9:30 PM. There was a lady cleaning the glass door. She turned out to be my waitress.
As I walked in, I had to pause for a moment as my senses were totally assaulted. My nostrils filled with old fish and day-old crustaceans. It was a near-rancid smell that was sickly and sweet. The smell of death.
I am not being gross, cute or funny here. This place smells really bad. I sat (why?) down and talked to the waitress about the Pho. I pronounced the name correctly (Fa) and she said they did not have any. I then pronounced it 'Pho'. She said they did not have it. I said 'it is on the window'. She said 'oh, it is on the buffet'. WTF? 'On the buffet...'. I said I would check it out.
I went to the buffet. There are three or four steam tables filled with food. There is a nice selection, but I wonder about the freshness. I was looking for Pho. Did not see it. Went to the front and asked the guy working the front about the Pho - he said 'it is there in the corner...'.
OK - enough is enough. I shook my head and thanked them for their time and hoped they had a nice evening. Then left.
Sickly smelling place. Not somewhere I would ever actually eat.

OK - Sue H and I went here for lunch today. She had heard about it from some co-workers. Today we fired up the new Droid smart phone in the Google search mode, voiced the name and location, the phone returned the map data, choose navigate and away we went. Droid drove us right to the front door (I know - a shameless plug for my new Droid - oh well...).
We arrived mid-afternoon. There were only a few other people in the restaurant. Server sat us and gave us our drinks and chips and salsa. The salsa was homemade. Consisted of tomatoes, onions, cilantro, and some tomato-based sauce. It was tasty, but it was runny (although I liked it a lot). Ordered some queso to go with the chips.
Sue H ordered a chimichanga (beef) and I ordered the tacos al carbon - one chicken and one steak.
Dinners arrived on a hot plate (I just love that about good Tex-Mex places) and it smelled delicious. Our food was hot and very good. Sue loved the chimichanga. Her beef was very tender and the chimi was cooked perfectly - just a little crunchy on the outside and perfectly moist and delicious.
My tacos al carbon were excellent as well. I like to mix my beans and rice together and did so today. The beans were spicy and the rice had a wonderful flavor. This is not Rice-A-Roni - this is the real deal. The meat in my tacos was tender and well seasoned.
Overall - we enjoyed our lunch. The best part was the fried ice cream (see photo) we shared. Another good positive is the plates were not so large that you filled up totally on beans and rice. All the portions were well planned and just right for a filling meal, but not too much.
This IS our go-to Tex-Mex restaurant from now on. Woohoo!!

Jerusalem Restaurant

Coworkers and I came back for lunch. Walked in and sat down at a very large table. There were desserts and breads on one side of the dining room. That got us going. Smelled great!
Three of us ordered the Shawarma Demashkia. Took it with fries. We were expecting one sandwich, but the dish comes with three sandwiches each - wow! The Shawarma is drizzled with a sauce. Reminds me of the Gyro or Greek sauce. Tasty!
Another coworker ordered a lamb dish. Meat was an ample portion and she said it was excellent. Came with saffron rice (a lot).
The last coworker ordered something in a bowl. It was Fatteh chicken. He liked the dish except for the bread that was on the bowl. It looked excellent (the bread is pita in layers - must have been moist from the dish juices).
Overall - we all liked our meals. Service was excellent and the prices are reasonable.
We will return here for lunch many times! I am thinking of going there for lunch or dinner tomorrow (on the weekend).
My Jerusalem Haiku:

First impression - big food. Big as in large portions and lots of calories. Bad... There are slices of pizza (NY style therefore big), calzones, turnovers, soups, salads, and just about anything you can do with bread. Like I said, big food.
Our first visit, so we were not totally prepared for what we were about to do. I ordered a (1) Caesar salad (2) bowl of soup (3) slice of pizza and was eye-balling the dessert section. Sue ordered (1) Chef's salad (2) slice of pizza (well... it was baked ziti in a pizza shape on pizza crust) and (3) cup of soup. Took our drinks and sat down with our number...
The bills was a little over $30. I was thinking, hmmm, seems rather expensive for a slice of pizza, side salads and soup. Wrong:
Pizza - large and enough to be a meal by itself.
Soup - mine was a bowl. It was a large bowl and I had the pasta faguilo. It was delicious. It too could have been a small lunch by itself. Sue had a cup of minestrone. It was too salty to consume. Seriously salty. The kicker is the bread that came with the soups. An entire basket of french bread toasted. OMG - did I say big food here?
Salad - Sue's was wonderful. The Chef's salad had ham rolled with cheese (probably 8 of them), salami, olives, artichokes, red peppers, salad peppers, onions, even had lettuce!. My Caesar was OK. Just OK. It was large also.
We sat and shared the meals, picking at each others salads and commenting on how big the food was. We ate most of our salads and some of the pizza. It was enough to satisfy us. That brings me back to the price - it is a little steep for two people at a pizza place. Next time, we will order a slice and a salad and quit there. That should keep it less than $20 and I don't mind that amount for lunch.
Good place. Big food. Be hungry and be prepared for a lot of bread. If you are a dieting person or someone who tries to avoid a lot of carbs, this restaurant is not for you. Otherwise, enjoy.
My Margherita Haiku:
Pizza all around
Bread comes from every angle
Eat too fast and bust
I don't agree or disagree with the other reviews. I concur with most of what has been said here.
My spin on the infamous Super Chicken (this restaurant has been on the top restaurants of Manassas for as long as I have been on Yelp):
Chicken - good. It is hot and tasty. Peruvian style with spices on a rotisserie. You can get a quarter to a whole chicken. You can choose your meat (dark/white) on the smaller portions. I went for the quarter white meat. There really was not a lot of edible chicken there. The chicken had been split down the middle and then split again cross-ways. I got the front part of a split (we need the ability to draw on Yelp). Probably 2 oz of actual meat.
Sides: The sides are on a steam table. Corn, rice, red beans, fat fries, etc. I opted for the red beans and rice (that is the redneck in my DNA). Mixed them together on the plate.
Condiments: There is a verde sauce. A little heat. Jalapeño-based sauce. Pretty runny and designed for chicken dipping. I poured one of mine over the beans and rice and the other on to my plate for chicken dipping.
Have to talk about the plate: Boo - styrofoam. No kidding - styrofoam. Plastic knives, forks and spoons. I was wrestling with pulling chicken off the bone with the plastic fork when the young lady came over and gave me a real knife and fork. She said 'that does not work well with plastic'. I did not notice... The real knife cut through the styrofoam to the table. No - I have not been drinking.
Dining room: Small and quaint. Filled with guests and a plasma TV on the long wall tuned to a hispanic soap show. Seemed to be a popular show.
Diners: The place was 1/2 full (let's say 6) diners when I arrived. I was there for about 15 minutes and another 4 guests entered through the door. Most seemed to have ordered ahead and were picking up their food.
Price: I spent around $9.00 for the quarter chicken with two sides and a bottle of water. Considering the size of the chicken meat, I found this to be on the expensive side. Not sure this is a good value for your money.
Messy: Definitely. You are eating greasy chicken with your hands. There are small napkins for wiping those hands. Takes a couple to get most of it off. I found that licking my fingers was the best approach.
Overall - OK. I have had better. I did not dislike it, but I did not really like it either. I enjoyed the sides and the verde sauce more than the chicken.
Why is this restaurant so popular then? Location, location, location. It is close to a large sprawl of apartments and right off the main drag of Manassas (business 234). It is located in a strip mall area that has an international market, Pho restaurant, a nail salon, etc. This is a popular strip mall and I think a lot of the customers are from the apartments nearby.
My Super Chicken Haiku:
Small room, bright colors
Chicken spices, rice and beans
Messy fingers good
As with any Italian deli - there is a fairly large selection of sandwiches. Hot and cold. We opted for cold.
Sue H ordered a Zap. This sandwich has pepperoni, ham, other meats and veggies. She liked the sandwich, but did say it was extra salty. I tried the sandwich and tasted the extra salt as well. We dissected the remaining sandwich half (one half is more than enough to fill you up) and determined it was the ham that was extra salty. Not very Italian-like.
I ordered the Crazy Italian. This had salami, other meats, and veggies. It was rather bland. Even with the meats on thick, I did not get a good dose of taste that I usually get from an Italian sub.
What is good:
- Italian sub sandwiches in the middle of Manassas. That is cool.
- Small store where you can sit in the corner and dine. There are two small tables outside.
What is not so good:
- Too much lettuce on sandwiches
- The tomato is not top notch. I don't take away for this as tomatoes in Manassas are not fresh. Have to go to Wegman's or Whole Foods for fresh veggies.
- Not enough meat on sandwiches.
- Salty ham.
Overall - not bad. Not great. It is a good change of pace from fast-chain sandwich shops. I appreciate his efforts and will return again.
My A-1 Deli Italian Food Haiku:
Small room jammed with goods
Cheeses, meats, and bread
Tasty subs for sell
I have been to Tandoori before with Neal E and Rebecca P (now P-B). We had dinner here and wondered about how the lunch buffet would fair. Let me tell you - this lunch buffet is the best deal in Manassas!
Having been to the Minerva's (Fairfax and Herndon), I have seen the larger operations. They are too far to go from Manassas and they are more expensive. Tandoori is much smaller, much more elegant, the food is better, and let's talk about Naan - OMG - the Naan is cooked for you as you enter the buffet. It comes out hot and covers an entire plate. It is the best Naan I have ever eaten.
This restaurant should be on the top restaurants for Manassas. I think there is a geographic problem as they are located right alongside Route 28 in the Yorkshire area and the restaurant sits down the embankment from the main road. You cannot miss the sign on the roof as you pass by. That is the problem - you will most likely pass by and not realize you are at the restaurant.
I encourage Yelpers to come and visit this restaurant. Come for dinner and better yet, come for the lunch buffet. If you can take the time to drive to Manassas, this is one of the top restaurants you should visit.
My Tandoori Village Haiku:
Warm colors and smells
Rice, curry, spices and Naan
Fill me happily

I am way behind on posting this review!!
Met Neal and Rebecca for dinner at this restaurant. It is close to my house and have passed by many times. Today was the day to stop.
First impressions on entry were very positive. Clean - both physically and the air - no unsavory smells. That can sometimes happen when at a restaurant that caters to spicy foods.
As others have noticed - the decorations and theme of the restaurant are both authentic and beautiful. I wish I had a pic of the table top where we sat! It was very elaborate with wood carvings. I actually searched the Internet for Indian furniture and art to try and identify the style/meaning.
The food? It was fantastic. We had similar plates. Curry with meat (chicken and lamb). The curry was a little 'cool' in the spice category. I would have liked it to be a little more spicy.
Overall - a very nice restaurant. Staff are efficient and pleasant. Food is very good and the portions are ample.
This is a very good place for a quiet dinner. You can talk and enjoy yourself without the pressures of being rushed or bothered by noise or other diners. A very nice experience!

Falls Church Lunch Outing
December 9 11:45 AM
Date

There is change in the air. The menu is a little different (Neal's observation). After talking to the waitress, there were some changes in partners that own the restaurant.
Let's talk about the food. I ordered biscuits and gravy, two eggs medium, potatoes crispy, and some scrapple (what IS that stuff?).
Biscuits and gravy arrived first on one plate - biscuits were cold. Gravy was barely warm. Almost sent it back.
Eggs, scrapple, potatoes arrived a few minutes later on another plate. Eggs were medium, BUT they were runny on one side (how do you do that? Uneven pan over the heat? Runny as in the white raw stuff). Potatoes were not cooked all the way through (as in hard in the center). No comment on the scrapple, as I still am not sure what it really is.
Overall - service was very good. The restaurant is nice and comfortable. The food leaves a lot to be desired. I spent $15 for breakfast and left a $5 tip. For $20 dollars, I can get a much better breakfast just about anywhere else.
Talked to one of the owner's on the way out. Expressed the disappointment over some of the food items. He 'went to the kitchen' saying 'that is not good'. I agree wholeheartedly.
