The Counter

I like The Counter. I like the whole modern diner concept. On that point, it is executed beautifully. I've been to a lot of burger joints the past few years. I would agree that it wouldn't crack the top 10 in my book but hey I'm not really a burger snob. The decor is clean, sleek and modern, the servers are friendly. Prices are in the gastropub range $10-15. I did notice though that if you build your own 1/2 pound burger it would be about the same price as the 1/3 version. My gf ordered a banana milkshake (which was excellent) and the 3 cheese grilled cheese sandwich which wasn't very good on several points, the cheese didn't melt evenly so we sent it back. Second time around they STILL didn't get it sraight. Only inside the car on a hot Houston day would the cheese melt perfectly. I ordered a 1/2 pound burger with fried egg, blue cheese and sprouts (not a good choice). It came out ooozy and perfectly medium. I was pleased with my creation. I'll be back for happy hour and report more!!!

Pho 24 Cafe

Maybe it was the cold night. Maybe it was the fact that I was hungry as heck. But this was the best pho I've had in years. The broth was excellent. You know I always try the broth before I defile it with sriracha and hoisin sauce. I got the pho tai nam sach which is the flank steak and fatty brisket. I loved it. The fatty brisket seem to impart its flavor to the soup. Little bits of fat clung to the meet making it even more yummy. Decor was nice. I cam here with two non-asian friends and they loved it as well. Service was spotty. The waitress was young and impatient and rolled her eyes at us when we were'nt ready to order the first time. Prices aren't the cheapest in town. I got the XL bowl and it set me back about $7. I am so stoked that I have found a place that is open late so whenever I get cravings for late night Pho or viet food there is an alternative to TAN TAN so I can get MY PHO ON!!! I'll be back!!!

Ginger Thai & Sushi

Came here for lunch with a old friend of mine, she recommended this place. The place has a light airy feel with lots of natural light streaming in and vaulted ceilings. The place was packed at 11 am but still didn't have problems finding a seat. The best part about this whole experience has to be the salad bar/appetizer station. It wrapped around what was the bar and had all kinds of goodies in the offing from sushi rolls and spring rolls. It had quite a decent array of delights. After the fabulous beginning, came the main course lunch special. I ordered some peanut chicken with rice. It was fabulous! Nice mild curry and quite a generous portion. It wasn't cheap around $9 but if you factor the salad bar and the generous portions and friendly atmosphere I would say you could easily justify the amount. I would gladly return again.

Pappas Seafood House - CLOSED

This review is strictly for the sushi served in Pappa's seafood House.

This is a new concept for them and I think they are experimenting at this location to see if this will fly and then roll out to other locations.

The best value on the menu is the Shrimp roll ($5.95) only because Pappas must have some hookup on the shrimp cuz they were huge.

I also tried the hamachi roll. It was good but not worth the ($8.95).

The sashimi sucked. Some of the rolls that had raw fish was not fresh.

Service was painfully slow as usual for a chain. Order all at once since our first order took 30 minutes and our second order 45.

The lowdown: come during the day if you want a better experience since the Korean lady is working days. You don't want the guy working nights making your sushi.

Came here for a Xmas get together with some friends. I've been to the other locations before (Midtown and Shepherd).

The decor was ok and kitsche (think Lucho Libre meets Ikea) with vintage pics of the grand wrestler lining the walls. We proceeded to order some appetizers such as chile con carne and my friend had some ceviche trying to beat the happy hour.

For my entree I ordered the summer special which consisted of a chalupa, taco and beef enchilada and the requisite rice and beans. The experience was less than memorable. It was rather bland tasting. Meh, not impressed especially for the price ($12), I could've went to Taqueria Aranda's and had a better experience for my quickly devaluing dollar.

The only thing decent to report is the margaritas are still kick-ass strong and served in a huge fish-bowl style glass. Yum.

I'm sure I'll be back for someone's birthday or such but you won't find me here voluntarily.

Masala Wok

I would say this is the Pei-Wei of Indian food. Prices were reasonable around $8-10 range. I ordered the Southern Curry and asked for medium heat (didn't want to get carried away on my first try). The entree came with two thin naan and some basmati rice. The heat was nice and even and after about ten bites I found myself sweating it up. I just loved the curry and sopped it all up with my naan. I wish I had more naan though. I can't wait to go back and try the chicken tikka masala because the waitress said it was their most popular dish. This place definitely satisfied my curry cravings!!!!

Man, what a find! Tucked away in a non-descript strip center on the Northwest side of the metropolis this little gem was quite quite good. The fam and I came famished. The place has a buffet ( for $8.95) which looked tasty too. My brother who was familiar with this place preferred the sit down, family style version. We got 6 dishes from pan-fried noodle, seasame chicken, beef and brocolli and it was ALL GOOD!!! Every cell in my body was screaming delight and without the familiar greasy feeling. Strangely, we were the only Asian patrons there. Apparently, this place hit a sweet spot with the Islamic clientelle in the area.I would come back to this place.

If you want a quick, cheap bite to eat and are tired of your typical burger and fries variety then this place may be up your alley. Came here with my pops for a quick lunch and ordered the $4.99 grand opening special. Got the chicken teriyaki bowl. Comes with choice of beef, chcken, tofu, for your protein and white or brown rice. Order came pretty quickly and they serve it fresh to order which is a plus. Nice, clean atmoshpere, decent portions. Nice different sauces, like spicy schescwan and pineappple. Ok its not gourmet food but reminds me of all those beef bowl places in LA but now I'm glad its near me. I'll be back soon!

I tried to find this place a few years ago and got lost. Well, the other day I made a wrong turn on Westpark and literally ran into this place. What luck!!! This place has the best BUFFALO BURGERS in town. Period. Hands Down. Forget about your pre-conceptions about what you may have heard about Buffalo meat. Yes, they can be dry if not cooked right (I've had a few of those) but believe you me this was one juicy delectable burger. It took about 15 minutes from grill to my table which is pretty good in my book considering it was lunch time. They had a steady stream of customers which goes to show you how popular this joint was. The only drawbacks to this place was the limited seating space but since I was riding solo it wasn't a big deal. I dove into my mushroom swiss buffalo and wasn't dissapointed. The price was reasonable too. The best part has to be the American Flag on top of the bun. The jalapeno potato salad was scrumptious too. Overall, a great experience that I can see me coming back time and again. I can't wait for my next burger adventure here!!

Smashburger

Dear Smashburger,

Like the decor and friendly staff. Not so thrilled about your burger. Believe me, my friends have built up the hype of this place and sadly it didn't live up to my expectations. I will concede that the burger was flavorful almost to the point of too salty but it kind of reminded me of the old McDLT which is ok if you are selling a $2-3 burger but not a $6 burger. The portion size was big enough but it just didn't fit the bill of a $6 burger. I'm not saying this is a bad place and I would go back again to test out the other stuff on their menu like their chicken burgers but it didn't do it for me that day. I can think of a dozen other hole-in-the wall burger dives that make a respectable, delectable burger for under $6. Oh and the fries were a minor disappointment as well yeah I get the whole rosemary thing but I just couldn't taste any of it. I was trying my best to like this place and I did find some redemption, the sauces were pretty good. Keep working on it Smashburger. I will be watching.
