A swell little local business. They did a great job fixing our vacuum cleaner and cleaning and tuning up my mom's old Bernina sewing machine. I love the whole vibe of the place; it's a maze of sewing machines and vacuum cleaners, they sell thread and some other sewing notions (not easy to find in this part of town), and are nice people.

Tracey has been rockin' my hair for years now. She's a one-woman shop, which I love--I find busy salons overwhelming. She's all about communication and wants to make sure you get exactly what you hope for. I wanted a gray streak (the gray is natural, the rest not so much) and she figured out how to do it and has kept it looking wonderful. Plus, her prices are great. You don't need a fancy high-dollar salon. Try Tracey instead.

I love this dive--friendly, comfortable, creative (in terms of the stuff they book--movies and football nights and music) and in an underserved area. Oh, and great pizza.
I've lived near here for decades and this is the first place like this to venture this far south.
It's not easy to find but look for the Telstar Center across the street.

Once again, I'm going to give thumbs-up to a chain just because they are hanging in there south of the Trinity. I wanted to meet a friend who lives in De Soto for lunch and we determined that this place was an easy in-between spot for us. The restaurant was busy with what looked like local business people (and a table full of cops). We sat in the pleasant bar area and enjoyed friendly, efficient service. I liked my Asian Chicken & Shrimp Salad. It's not for food snobs but I'm sure I'll be back.
Love, love, love this place. Small enough to not be overwhelming, well stocked with local and organic products, friendly people, and it's convenient. They have a great coffee selection at a great price, a good bulk section, I love grinding my own peanut butter. I'd give it five stars if if they had a better bread selection but that's nitpicking.
I tend to go catatonic in Whole Foods--it's just too big for me (and too expensive) and I like Sprouts, but it's much farther away. Cox Farms is perfect, I don't know why it took me so long to find it.

Avoid it on weekends, when it's chaotic, but this is a great place for fresh tortillas and other Mexican baked good, inexpensive produce (though it can be hit or miss--we've got some feh fruit here) and various Mexican meats and specialties.
Kim paid more attention to my eyebrows than I ever have! She pondered them, discussed them, shaped them, and then made plans for their future, showing me how they would look (using make-up) if I let them grow in a little more. Yep, gonna do it. This was my first threading and it hurt a little more than I expected, but the precision is great. My brows look fantastic, Kim is a delightful person and I Iook forward to seeing how I'll look over time if I follow her eyebrow advice and let her care for them.
I like to go to this Macy's sometimes just to cheer up the employee.
I'm not sure why Macy's is still hanging around the poor, sad Southwest Center Mall, but as long as it's there I will patronize it. Sometimes I don't feel like dealing with NorthPark. This Macy's is a fraction of the size of it's glitzy sister to the north, but that's actually a plus to me. I tend to get overstimulated around too much merchandise and shut down, leaving the store empty-handed. This is Macy's Lite. It's easy to deal with, it's close and it carries the same merch as other Macy's, just not as much. And the employee really is happy to see you.
Whatever you do, though, don't step out into the mall if you are prone to depression.

Boykin Kennels

We've had four dogs over the years in various stages of the life cycle, young and healthy to elderly and frail, and various temperaments, from cheerful to tightly wound. All have spent many nights in the kennels in the woods at Boykin and come home cheerful. The owner Carol is a tough ol' bird, but she loves dogs and they love her and all is well.
I'd give Boykin five stars except that the hours are challenging--it's closed Thursdays and Sundays, so a four-day weekend means five nights boarding (you do the math). All other days it closes at 5 p.m. Nonetheless, we are longtime, loyal customers.
