One baby onesie with his name written across the chest = $24. It's so tiny and cute! *ovary spasms*

Service was prompt and polite. I was in and out in 10 minutes. They wrap it up like a deli sandwich and add stickers-- I'm really excited to give this gift.

I'm keeping the T-Shirt Deli in my arsenal of stores that are great for gifts.

Smokey Bears BBQ House - CLOSED

I made it back for the turkey leg! It was good but a little on the dry side. A turkey leg + coleslaw + a side = your only meal for the day. Seriously, you will be full for a long time.

I hate to say the "S" word but I think the flavors are better at Smoque. On the other hand, there's no wait at Smokey Bear's and it's closer to home.

Smokey Bear has potential and we will be back, but our first visit warrants 3 stars.

It sounds like they are catching on--when we arrived they were out of beef brisket and ribs. The guy at the counter said they didn't expect so many people that day.  So, we went with the pulled pork and rib tips. Rib tips were smokey and good but the pulled pork was a little on the dry side.

I'm not a fan of sweet potato fries but these were probably some of the best I've tasted--crunchy and kind of sweet. FYI - Kevin Pang in the Tribune rated these fries really high. Mac and cheese and baked beans were okay but nothing to write home about.

As far as décor, I don't really care about what the inside of a BBQ place looks like as long as 1) it's clean and 2) I have enough elbow room. I do think Nascar was on the tv...

If you don't feel like waiting in line at Smoque, try Smokey Bear. We will be back to try the brisket and ribs (and maybe a turkey leg). I recommend not eating all day so you can really throw down.

This is my "go-to" place when picking up quick gifts. The merchandise turns over quickly, prices are reasonable, and they wrap your purchase for free.

This strip on Montrose has really got it going on.

Hazel has so....many.....cute. .....things! Usually my husband does not do so well in stores for women but he ventured off and kept himself busy (I think he really liked this store). Greeting cards were highlarious, especially the ones that had old photographs on the front with really witty messages inside. Jewelry was unique-artsy-cute (found a $90 necklace I want to go back and get).

Tons of potential gifts in here.

Damn, everything was good. I feel I need to visit one more time before I give 5 stars...

Bright space with a lot of seating. Like another Yelper stated, I wouldn't recommend this as a place to take a new date--unless you want to see him/her eat copious amounts of food in a near daylight setting.

The veggie samosas had a spicy kick to them but I wouldn't mind trying the beef ones next time. Frontier chicken, Pasanda kabab, Sabri Nihari (be sure to dip your nan in the sauce), and Bhindi Ghost, were all really, really good. Regular nan is $1.99 and can easily be split between 2 people.

Sabri Nihari made a Pakistani food lover out of me!

Magnolia Cafe

I've wanted to try Magnolia Café for several years now. I've driven past it probably a thousand times. New Year's Eve was the perfect opportunity to finally pull the trigger.

First, this restaurant is super cozy....and a little cramped. Navigating through the main dining room, to the other room, involves trying to get past at least 2 servers and another patron.

Our server was bubbly and helpful with providing recommendations. We had high expectations for the food and everything was good but nothing too memorable. To start we had the crab cakes and for his entree my husband had the short ribs with mac and cheese, spinach, and onion rings. I had a special with king crab, risotto with peas, and calamari in a tomato bisque & wine reduction sauce. For dessert we tried the flourless chocolate cake with ice cream and caramelized banana. Again, everything was good but left something to be desired.

I don't think we would return for dinner but we would definitely give brunch a try.

Cat & Mouse Game Store

How have I not known about this place?

I come from a "big board game playing" family. When we get together, 90% of the time, a board game is pulled out. Cat & Mouse Game Store is now a must when buying gifts for the fam.

The selection is much, much better than at Target. You can read game reviews on Cat & Mouse's website and compare those to reviews on Amazon. Also, the worker when I went in was knowledgeable on the games. For Christmas gifts I picked up Wits & Wagers, Dixit and Spot It! You could probably find the games cheaper on Amazon but why not support a neighborhood store?

Every Tuesday is game night here which might be fun to meet some new people.

Margie's Candies

Update - 12/23/2010
I'm cooling it on my sugar intake. Like, majorly cooling it on my sugar intake. And just in time for the holidays too!

For my last hurrah, the husband on a whim said "let's go to Margie's for your last brownie sundae!" No twisting of my arm here, I was down.

We sat inside and while I tentatively thought about getting the turtle sundae we went with our first instinct and got the brownie sundae. It's huge and easily "splitable" between two people. And God Bless America I love the gravy boat of fudge on the side. In my opinion, fudge should always be served in large gravy boats. All of it was good--the vanilla ice cream, wafers, fudge---the only let down was the warm brownie got kinda hard after a few minutes.

FYI- There are boxes and boxes of candies here ready to be given as gifts (what female in your life wouldn't enjoy a box of turtles?).

I had no idea that you wait to be seated and someone takes your order at Margie's. What kind of ice cream parlor is this?

The menu was quite large although I was disappointed that there was only one item with a brownie (although I'm sure you can ask to have it added to any sundae).

I need to get some of those clamshell bowls for sharing sundaes--it was quite practical. And your own gravy boat of fudge? Excellent idea, whoever came up with that. My piece of dutch apple pie was the best I've ever had.

We were there late and I couldn't believe how many little kids I saw. Since when do parents let kids stay up past 10? (Okay kids, who wants to go to Margie's before bedtime?)

Jewell Animal Hospital

Yep, not changing vets anytime soon. Still love Jewell Animal Hospital, the staff, the parking lot, and the Pet Portal. The Pet Portal is an online system where you can log in and see appointment history, upcoming needed shots, and schedule appointments.

We were having a kitty issue. I had researched the problem but for good measure decided to take her in to make sure there were no medical issues going on. This was my first time meeting Dr. Mitchell and I liked him. And as always, watching male vets "baby talk" to my cat brings a smile to my face.

$60 later we got a clean bill of health from the vet and some good advice on dealing with the problem. And we received some comic relief when we watched a hyper pug attempt to get weighed.

We've had our adopted cat for a year and decided it was time to take her to the vet.

I opted for Jewell because of the rave reviews and because of the parking lot. Everything went smoothly and I especially  like how you can print  the forms from their website and fill them out before the appointment.

The vet assistant (blonde woman) was truly the kitty whisperer. My cat is not good around new people but you never would have known. I mean, heck, my cat was very calm even with a thermometer up her butt.

While waiting for Dr. Jewell to administer the shots, I heard him on the phone with someone who had recently lost a pet. It was very touching to hear how he consoled the person by saying not to be embarrassed about grieving and recounted his personal experience with losing a pet. The people at Jewell really care about animals.

The icing on the cake? Dr. Jewell even kissed my cat on the head AND after giving her shots, picked her up and cradled her like a baby (complete with baby talk).

So these boots previously referenced in the original review are AMAZING.  I wear them several times a week and they are super comfortable. I recently walked through ankle-deep wet cement in them (in my defense, it had just been poured and was not roped off). The construction worker offered me a hose to wash them off and my socks got neither wet nor cement-y. These boots are well-made--Nocona is the brand and I believe I paid $75 for them.

I remember visiting a similar store in Houston that was lined with used cowboy boots. To my delight, the prices at Horse Feathers were more reasonable than the store in Houston.

I bought a pair of cowboy boots and on my way out, spotted a pair of randomly placed Tony Lama's in my size, for cheaper than I had just spent. I think I still like the ones I walked out with better but let me be a lesson to you--look over the whole store if on the hunt for boots.

The funny handmade signs displayed in the window lured us in. A real cowboy owns this store and is very friendly.
