Yaku

The decor is very urban, chic and modern as is the music.  It is set up for dining, drinks or lounging.  I focused mainly on the Peruvian menu items and enjoyed every one.  The waitress was very friendly, which made up for any gaps in service.  It can mature easily into 4 stars, if they work hard,  because the space and the concept will probably work in Arlington.  The drinks were good, the desert was uneventful.  Really enjoyed the appetizers and entrees.  Casual attire was accepted but it has a dressy feel.

Sea Pearl

Category: Restaurants

4 star rating

Sea Pearl, like the name suggests is a gem of a restaurant.  The interior has an air of upscale urban sophistication which is surprising given its suburban location.  The oceanic name of the restaurant gives a hint as to the restaurant's strong seafood selection.  On our most recent visit we enjoyed the superb Sea Pearl Platter, a delightful medley of lobster, raw oysters, raw clams, mussels and shrimp served with four highly tempting sauces on a bed of ice.  The mussels were perfectly prepared and seasoned.  The Sea Pearl Platter is a first course item and is quite large and is best shared with 3-5 people.  The fish selection is extensive and inventive.  Pan Seared Tilapia is dusted with Moroccan spices and served over winter root vegetables.  If you don't prefer spicy, try the Baked Alaskan Cod Fish which is topped with lump crab meat and yuzu butter sauce, a rich melt-in-your-mouth dish.  Coconut Creme caramel with summer fruits ambrosia was a pleasurable finish to a terrific meal.  Like any young restaurant, the servers are still learning the ropes. [Hilarious moment: we asked the server about the desert item and he told us it came with a "fruit compost"]  The restaurant is located just off the beltway at the intersection of Gallows Road and Strawberry Lane in Falls Church Virginia and has ample free parking.  Easier than diving for pearls, enjoy this restaurant soon.

PS: Super cool bathroom area, the door handles glow red when occupied.

Had lunch here before a movie on Saturday.  So for this function the price and the rapidly available food fit well.  However, I was not real impressed.  I have had much better BBQ at Rocklands.

The sauce was fairly good but the rib and brisket were just ok.  The collard greens were uneventful and the cole slaw was decent.

So if you want a quick bite in Chinatown it is ok, but if you actually want tasty BBQ I would try Rocklands instead.

Flavors Soul Food

This place has been listed for Cheap Eats in some publication that I don't recall.  The ribs were very disappointing, kind of gross in fact.  The fried chicken which is one of their strong points is made to order, so it takes about 20 minutes.  The corn bread was decent.  The collard greens were tasty and the cole slaw was good.  The potato salad was even better.

Why not more stars?  Minus one star for a roach on the floor.  Minus one for the ribs, they were just gross.  Also I don't dig 5 TVs on when there are 2 people in the restaurant.

If they would give the place a thorough cleaning and sprucing up it might be worth a trip but right now I call it cheap and dirty but very good fried chicken.

Unity Woods offers instruction in Iyengar Yoga.  Classes are fairly large and usually full.  Classes range from introductory to fairly advanced.  The studio is bright and well-lit by natural light.  Props and mats are provided.  Class sessions are 12 weeks long and are sold at the studio and online.  I've had positive experience with all instructors.

Outstanding therapist.  Experienced and professional.  Offers treatment for a wide variety of psychiatric or behavioral disorders.  She has special expertise in group therapy and eating disorders.  She offers treatment for individuals as well as couples.

One draw back of GW MFA is that they don't accept assignment on insurance.  This means you have to pay out of pocket (and it is quite expensive) and then submit your receipt to your insurance and hope for reimbursement.  This arrangement will not work for most HMO's.

The Italian Store

I don't have much to add to the loads of positive reviews on this place.  I go here when I want a sub to go as their Italian subs are hard to beat.  I've ordered take out Pizza as well and was very pleased.  They also have a nice store for picking up Italian items and wine.

On the down side, there is always a line, but that is the price to pay to have your sub made right in front of you--and so much better than Subway.

Dr. Daniel Lieberman, MD

Category: Psychiatrists

5 star rating

Writing a review on a psychiatrist is kind of strange thing to do, but if it helps others looking for a doctor I'm all for it.

Dr. Lieberman is courteous, professional and highly competent.  He is qualified to treat virtually any psychiatric disease and seems to have special expertise in treating Bi Polar (Manic-Depressive) Disorder.  I believe he is also certified in treating addictions.  I have a text-book on Bi Polar Disorder and his name appears in the credits, so I think he is accomplished in the academic world as well.

One major drawback of the GW MFA Department of Psychiatry is that they operate on a cash only basis.  So visits are expensive, you have to pay out of pocket and then submit the receipt to your insurance on your own.  This effectively shuts out most HMO patients but your PPO might give you some kind of reimbursement for your visit.

He is prompt, but has limited office hours, the other time presumably for research/teaching as he is on the faculty staff.

Each year One In Ten puts on Reel Affirmations, a week long film festival showcasing film enjoyed by the gay and lesbian community and their supporters and friends.  Covering a wide-range of programming, films range greatly in topic.  Whether gay, bisexual, lesbian, transgendered, transsexual or some other permutation of sexual or gender identity, this film festival usually has something for everyone.  Several first-run productions are often shown during the festival.  VIP passes with reserved seating are the best way to enjoy the films as lines can be long and popular films on popular nights are quite packed.  A film festival wouldn't be a festival without parties and this film festival usually offers several outdoor parties.

I say if you already are maxing out your cholesterol dose for the week, go ahead and add the cheese and bacon to the burger.  Seriously, good burgers at this place though it is a grease palace.  Fries are good with Cajun and plain versions.  I always order the junior burger because one patty of meat is plenty.  You can customize your burger anyway you like with condiments that range from mushrooms to barbecue sauce.  It is hard to go wrong with this place, unless you are a vegetarian or you don't like back yard barbecue food.
