The Breakfast Club

On a Friday morning I was craving a real diner breakfast, and being from New Jersey, I'm a little picky.  I was pleasantly surprised by The Breakfast Club A) because it really is a good breakfast spot and B) I love pop culture from the late 80's.  So walking in with Ah-Ha's "Take on Me" on the radio and Ghostbuster's and The Breakfast Club (obviously) posters on the walls and ceilings made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

Taking a seat at the counter, I was able to watch everyone's breakfasts being made because the griddle is right out front.  I had "The Criminal" (all the specials are named after characters from The Breakfast Club and other 80's classics) which was two eggs, homefries, toast, and meat (I had sausage).

The red skin potato homefries were excellent - seasoned and spiced extremely well without onions or peppers (I'm a minimalist).  The sausage was also excellent, with the crispy skin I'm looking for in a breakfast sausage.

Overall I had a really great experience, but I had to take off a star because I ordered the free-refill coffee, yet was never offered a refill!!!  I was at the counter and my waitress passed me at least 10 times and I had only one cup of coffee with breakfast.  If I'm not shaking when I leave, I haven't had enough coffee and The Breakfast Club just didn't cut it in that department.

With 350+ reviews, Drink definitely doesn't need little old me to pat it on its back.  Yet, seeing that ti was not rated at 5 stars yet made me want to throw my two cents in anyway.

My boyfriend and I went to Drink around 8pm last Thursday.  In a place this small, we were expecting a wait, but miraculously got right up to a bar seat before we finished our first glass of water.

We decided to order some food to go along with our cocktails including the Salmon Rillettes, Grilled Cheese, and Warm Olive plates.

The Salmon Rillettes came with  perfectly toasted pumpernickel slices, vinegar marinated onions (we guessed apple cider vinegar) and super fresh salmon chopped with horseradish mayo.  I was ready to swim in the bowl after we had scooped out the last fresh bits of salmon.

The Grilled Cheese were what I thought was a perfectly deconstructed french onion soup.  There were crisp flatbreads spread with gruyere cheese and mustard marinated onions that were wonderfully reminiscent of cheesy, rich french onion soup.  The flatbreads were nice and salty and equally peppery, much to my delight.

The Warm Olives were delicious and swimming in olive oil, but were really overshadowed by the two main dishes.

You don't go to a place called Drink just for food, though, and we had some excellent cocktails.  For my first, I ordered a pick-me-up because I was a bit worn out from the week and feeling a little tired.  I got a delicious coffee creme liqueur on the rocks that the bartender said should remind me of my morning coffee, just punched up a little (which it did).

Next I ordered a mint julep which was served in an icy metal goblet with shaved ice to the top and literally 6 or 7 sprigs of fresh mint.  The mint was meant to flood my nose while sipping to really infuse the mint flavor in all my senses.  The taste of bourbon and mint with the fresh mint smell was really perfect.

My last cocktail was called Pim's Cup which had lemonade, ginger ale, cucumber, and pims.  There was an ice cube and cucumber slice stack in the tall glass and the cocktail itself was delicious and light.  It did not tip me over the edge despite my already full stomach.

I knew this would be a long review because of my own gluttony, but I have to mention one of my boyfriend's drinks.  He asked the bartender for something she would serve only to a friend who she was sure would still be her friend after drinking something so strange (he's a glutton for punishment).  What he ended up with was a strawberry and tabasco slushy.  It was insanely good and I was glad she didn't tell us what was in it before I tried it because the combination sounded a bit weird for me.

OH, lastly (I promise)!  A fellow Drink-er had ordered their special punch and gave us a taste and it was incredible.  They use the whey from milk and infused it with God knows what, but I'd strongly recommend it.  Very smooth.

Dorado Tacos & Cemitas

I've been to Dorado a few times and am just writing a review now.  The previous few trips have been good, but not great.  My latest trip there, however, has bumped Dorado up to a 5 star establishment for me.

I did a meal deal with a cup of soup (gazpacho for the summer season) and a taco (their "Dorado"- fried fish, cabbage, spicy sauce, radishes) for $5.99.  The gazpacho tasted like a Mexican garden took root in my mouth.  The cucumber and tomato were punchy and the cilantro really woke all the flavors up.  This gazpacho was a pureed form, which is not what I grew up eating, but still delicious.

And the dorado taco was outstanding.  The fish is fried, but not oily or heavy at all.  The cabbage and radishes added a really fresh crunch to the whole taco.

My boyfriend got the two taco platter with a grilled fish taco and their special grilled calamari taco.  I had a taste of the calamari taco and can say it is definitely worth a trip if you enjoy squid.  It had a smoky, grilled flavor yet wasn't tough or rubbery.  It definitely kept its quintessential squid-y texture, however.  It also came with a delicious avocado salsa that was fresh and not overwhelming.

Hurry to Dorado before the summer ingredients are gone!!

Lord Hobo

Lord Hobo was good, but not worth traveling from Brighton to Cambridge for.  Yes, the beer selection was good, particularly the draughts.  The menu was kind of sparse (1 page), but seemed to cover a lot of palate pleasers from the more refined halibut and quinoa to the burgers and mac-n-cheese.

I was quite disappointed in our cheese plate, however.  For $10, we got three slices (literally, slices) of cheese with two sauces.  The food runner brought it over, named the cheeses, and left us to figure out what the sauces were.  One was a truffle honey which was divine, but again, sparse.  Hardly enough for four people who had been waiting to get their order taken for at least 20 minutes.

I think the experience wasn't helped by the waitress who forgot about us for long stretches of time.  A member of my party ordered a beer and she hadn't put it in until she came back to take another member's beer order and suddenly remembered.

All in all, it's a good place for decent food and beer, but I wouldn't go out of my way for it.

The Publick House

If this was based on the beer alone, I'd give it four stars.

My boyfriend and I went on a Thursday night to start celebrating the weekend a bit early.  We're recent Philly expats and had a local place where we'd go for exactly the same thing- good dinner, great beer, and a chill vibe.

The Publick House is the closest we've come to our former local place.  The beer selection was great and I was excited to see a bunch of New England breweries that I hadn't tried before, as well as some old favorites.  The food was underwhelming.  The Caesar salad was a little over-dressed for my taste (but came with fresh anchovies on top- yum!), and my muscles came in a tiny pot with little room to reach the delicious broth below.  Also, a couple of my muscles had grit in them.

I'll probably go back to The Publick House, but just for beer and maybe more bar-food-type snacks.

I ate here a few weeks ago, so pardon my memory being a little cloudy.

When my boyfriend and I went, we were only the second table occupied in the place.  The waiter was incredibly attentive, knowledgeable, and professional.  It may have been easier for him to be attentive since it was basically empty, but his professionalism was unmatched by any other restaurant in this price range that I've eaten in.

Each table gets complementary flatbread (think like Indian naan) with three dipping sauces.  I am one of those people who cannot stand the taste of cilantro, yet after eating their green cilantro/parsley sauce, I can't get enough cilantro.  It's like I had never really tasted cilantro correctly until I had this sauce.  My boyfriend commented on how much he liked the roasted red pepper (also spicy pepper) sauce, and the waiter gave him some to take home.

Both of our entrees were delicious.  I am foggy on the details, but I had a steak with greens, rice, and lentils on the side, and my boyfriend had salad with grilled chicken and roasted veggies on top.  I couldn't help but get dessert because 1) everything was so reasonably priced, 2) everything was so delicious, and 3) I really want this restaurant to stick around so I wanted to give them more business.

If you have any inkling towards delicious vegetarian or meat based dish with rice on the side and amazing sauces, definitely go to Ariana.  I don't want them to disappear!!

Supercuts

I recently moved to Boston and also recently cut my hair short (longer than a pixie, but short enough that it doesn't touch my shoulders).  So I was nervous to find a place up here to cut my hair so I wouldn't end up looking like a 9 year old boy.  I called ahead to SuperCuts (they don't take appointments further than the day of) and got matched up miraculously with Robert.  I asked for a Carey Mulligan haircut, and he looked at a picture on my phone.  The whole time he was cutting, he explained exactly what he was doing and why he was doing it (i.e. layering diagonally instead of straight across because of my super fine hair).  I picked up a new product to style my hair, and the entire thing (plus shampoo) was like $33 (I think the product was around $12).  I'm so lucky to live near here and have definitely found my go-to hair place!!
