Two Words. Buttered Toast.
I have been going to the Alcove for years and there is one thing I always forget... the service is seriously hit or miss. One minute you have a super friendly person helping you and in the same visit you have the worst service ever. Not to mention, that if you aren't ordering a pastry or tea, half the time they screw up your order and aren't apologetic about it either. Which brings me back to the buttered toast.
If I learned one thing from traveling it's this, by the time room service reaches you, your toast is cold and trying to get cold butter on cold toast is is a great way to ruin your morning. So, I went to the Alcove for breakfast and asked if they could butter my toast (some places won't) and the guy behind the counter said yes, repeated my order back to me and said with your toast buttered. Food came out, toast was cold and not buttered. I brought it back to the front, dealt with a different guy who looked at me and said (very sarcastically), "You want US to BUTTER YOUR toast?" Implying that I was too lazy to do this myself and there was no way I could seriously be asking him to do this. At which point I said, "Really?". And went on to explain to him my cold toast theory and said, "Yes, I would like you to redo my toast." To be fair my toast did come out this time properly, however it was TEN MINUTES later and I had already finished my eggs.
I would totally give this place 1 star except for two reasons. The location really is nice and when they don't screw up your order (this wasn't the first time) the food is quite good. I mean I've seen my friend order a chicken salad and it was missing the chicken and when we brought it to their attention they seemed annoyed that we said anything. I guess no one told them they were a service oriented business. So if you can deal with the lines and the awful service (which I usually do)... you can actually have a good meal here.

The inventory here is rotated fairly often, so every time you walk in, you're bound to find some new thing you can't live without. If you are ever in the neighborhood, you have to stop in here. We need to support smart independent stores! And this one is as good as it gets.
