On impulse one weeknight we were looking for a Thai place and found this Yelp review. All I had to read was "blah blah blah...dethrone Krungthai..." and I was all "EVERYONE GET IN THE CAR".
We used to be big fans of Krungthai North Winchester, but it started to go down hill a few years ago. It was our GOLD STANDARD for Thai food.
We got to Lanna Thai and got a table right away. We ordered a couple of dishes with chicken. Pumpkin curry, satay, and pad se ewwww.
The curries and sauces were good, but the chicken was a little over cooked and tough. Everything was tasty, but there wasn't the extra something that pushes it over the top from "Mmmmm" to "OH GOD YES!"
The only places I know that get close to that level currently are the Krung Thai location in Mountain View near the San Antonio center ( next to Trader Joe's ) and Sweet Basil in Foster City.

We went for our second trip last night. As an appetizer we had the Gnocci. It's a potato dumpling with an amazing orange creamy sauce.
I had the Farfalle and the Pear Salad, my wife had the Crab Ravioli and the Caesar Salad. My pear salad, with arugula, bleu cheese, warm toasted hazelnuts, and vinaigrette, was mind-blowing. Yes, a mind-blowing salad.
For wine I tried the Mendocino merlot for $9.
Everything was fantastic. Service was great - fast and courteous. Will definitely go again!

Had a great breakfast here one morning around Christmas time. We wanted a sit-down, full-service breakfast. We ordered your standard full on American breakfast, eggs, bacon, sausage, french toast, coffee, the works. Everything we great. They use Peerless coffee which is really good and happens to be my favorite. Wait staff was nice to us as well.
I liked this place right off the bat for its fun quirkyness. I first noticed the giant Santa painted on the windows saying "PHO PHO PHO!" That's a take on "HO HO HO". Get it? As we entered the restaurant we noticed the full bar and the Virgin Mary. Finally we got a table ( next to the aforementioned Santa ) and ordered pho and chocolate chip pancakes. No, no, you misunderstand! That's not one dish. Pho for the adults and pancakes for the kids. If you are an adult, and a pho fan, and you have kids, and they are not pho fans, you can enjoy your pho and they can have something they like to. That's what I'm tryin' to say, y'all. Finally the owner is cool and he brought our kids some awesome cheesecake.

Psycho Donuts

Have you ever had a bad donut? It does not happen very often. I decided to try Psycho Donuts recently, and had high expectations. I heard their blueberry donut got some kind of national recognition. I expected to be B L O W N A W A Y by these donuts. You probably know by now - the female employees dress as naughty nurses, there's a fun photo booth, patrons are encouraged to pop bubble wrap while they wait ( and wait and wait ) for service, and on the ceiling, gyrating gigantic mechanical eyeballs incessantly scan the parking lot forever. I had the Caribbean French Toast donut. It was...and I hesitate to use this word... "meh". It wasn't *bad*, in fact, it had good flavor, but it tasted like it had been sitting out for a while. I'm giving 4 stars for the serious creative effort that goes into making this place and their donut creations unique.

While visiting Newport News we decided to take everyone out for some Teppanyaki. We thought the kids would enjoy the show as their meal is cooked right in front of them. I refer to teppanyaki restaurants in general as "the place where the guy flings the shrimp at you". I was disappointed that no crustaceans were lobbed at our party at this time. However there was something memorable and that was the GINORMOUS EYEBROW-SINGEING FIREBALL which sent our son diving for cover. A good time was had by all. Also the food is delicious. I still don't know how they manage to impart that much flavor into the fried rice.
I like to stop in for the super size tapioca milk tea, and occasionally a snack like curry chicken. I like this place because it's very consistent, you never get some whacked out funky tapioca. Also the employees are nice and friendly even when it gets slammed with a long line. It's next door to a kickin' pho place too.
About a year ago when I needed new contact lenses, I chose to try Dr. Yap's location in Target mainly since it was close to work. I was very pleased with my eye exam and my new contacts. They are very comfortable. Dr. Yap and her staff are very nice and this is a modern office with up-to-date equipment. I recommended to my co-workers to go over here.
Nice new clean gas station with an impressive coffee bar!
