Gansevoort South

Category: Hotels

Love, love, love the Gansevoort in all of its incarnations.  We got married at the Gansevoort in Turks&Caicos so the Gansevoort in South Beach seemed like the natural spot for us to take our very last trip for awhile, also known as the babymoon.

The hotel is gorgeous, awesome rooms, phenomenal bathrooms.  We loved the infinity pool.  We checked out the rooftop pool but it was their Sunday pool party and it was a little too hopping for us.  We loved chilling out on the roof with some friends at night though.  Very mellow and beautiful space.

Frankly, this hotel is just a little too hip for us, especially when one of us is 6 months pregnant, but what it overdoes in coolness it makes up in luxury.  We had a great time!

The Red Cat

Yummmmmmmmm.  Red Cat was so good!  We weren't wowed by their menu (seemed boring and typical, salmon, chicken, duck, steak) but having been to their sister restaurant, the Harrison, we thought we'd give it a shot.  Some standouts: the bacon tempura, the curried sweet potato soup and the grilled pork tenderloin are the dishes not to miss.  A really great meal.

Chef Vola's

Chef Vola's is extremely impressive.  To be frank, my husband and I were unsure about going there (despite the hype, the reviews and the fact that we would have to drop a name to get in) because well, how good could a red sauce joint be?  But OMG, it's sooooo good.

We had the pasta tasting to start, my husband loved the clam sauce, I love the blush.  Then I got their veal on the bone parm style (out of this world delicious, best veal I've ever had, husband doesn't even like veal and made me wrap it and take it home--we live in NY, restaurant is in Atlantic City, seriously) and he had a snapper with crab in a pesto, champagne, cognac, cream sauce.  I had never tasted a sauce like it.

The place has such character too.  Can't wait to go back.

Taim Falafel & Smoothie Bar

This place just rocks.  I'm not the world's biggest falafel fan but the ones from here and just insanely good and tasty (taim means tasty in Hebrew, btw).  I can't believe the long lines, even during the day.  I guess it got hip in a hurry.  I hope it stays on point even with the celeb attention.

I was really surprised at the sheer averageness of this place after reading all the fawning reviews.  We had brunch here 2 weeks ago and I can't even remember what we had, it was that unmemorable.  When we left we agreed we didn't see a reason to ever return.  Not bad, exactly, just not even mentionable.

I LOVED this place.  While the seating is kind of awkward (works best for 2 couples dining together across from each other), the food was really fantastic and different.  Italian food made by a Japanese chef, it really met all of our expectations. Would definitely return.

I am obsessed with the idea of bacon+chocolate and this place has that unusual taste ready for me.  I have now tried the bacon milk chocolate bar (whoa) and the bacon caramel crunch (delish).  If you're into different types of flavors, give Vosges a shot.

This place is just a-ok.  Very average, typical new American cuisine.  You won't be disappointed but you won't be wowed either.  Oh, and don't make the mistake of forgetting your credit card here, it will be a saga and a half to get it back (especially if you want someone else to pick it up for you).

Of the 3 Gari Sushi spots, this is the ugliest.  The food is still quite delicious but it looks just like any other random midtown sushi spot.  If you're looking for ambiance to match the good food, look elsewhere.

My recommended pieces list for all Gari restaurants:

Miso marinated codfish
Seabass with fried seaweed
Tuna with tofu
Sea eel seared with eel sauce
Yellowtail with jalapeno sauce
Fried oyster
Red snapper with baby greens, pine nuts and fried lotus
Seared kingfish
Salmon with roasted tomato
Kingfish with mushroom

Enjoy!

PO Restaurant

Po is a great restaurant, with delicious food and good service.  But really, what makes it stand out, is the price.  It's sooooo well-priced for a great NYC restaurant.  Very cute place, definitely recommended.
