Busaba Eathai

Category: Thai
Neighborhood: Soho

5 star rating
 1/16/2009
This place is AWESOME. Better then any Thai food I've ever had in Thailand or the States! The service was pleasant, venue itself was very well designed - simple, clean lines and chic communal wood tables which I simply adored (both the communal part and the gorgeous tables). The scents as you walk through the door are of yummy spices and light amber... d'lish.

Another added bonus Busaba was that it wasn't insanely pricey - I'm speaking as an American having gone there when the dollar/pound conversion was nearly 2 to 1, so it was hard to find anywhere to go that didn't completely break the bank ;) At any rate, the prices were great for what they provide and we had a lovely time, as I'm sure you will.

The only drawback I can think of was that they don't take reservations, so you have to go on the early side if you don't want to wait.

Cool! I was not the most prolific Yelper last year - though I did do nice things for Yelp whenever I could :) - so I was a little surprised to get the nod... glad I did though, and this year I'll make a resolution to Yelp a whole lot more!

Thanks Connie, Jessica, Nish, Steph, Bryan, Jeremy, Jane and all my other peeps at Yelp... happy 2009!

Manila Eatery

It wasn't as bad as I expected it to be based on the location, prices and the fact that the food was served on hot trays and looked like it had been sitting out for a LONG time. (I would not normally eat at the place that looked this questionable, but I was having blood sugar issues and needed to get something in my system FAST!)

They have no vegetarian options so I had to eat tilapia that was served to me in it's entirety - head sitting on the pate next to the decapitated body. The fish was accompanied by 2 scoops of white rice, which had a soapy flavor to it... I was happy to know that they were using soap, but I'd prefer not to find out by tasting it...

Overall, I'm giving it 2 stars because I'm still alive and frankly, after traveling to some pretty sketchy parts of the world, this was far from the worst food I've ever eaten ;)

Nordstrom Rack

4 stars for the awesome shoe department, but 2 stars for the rest of the store.

Yesterday, I saw some awesome shoes at a great value! I even found a gorgeous pair of carved wood Stella McCartney wedges marked down from $1,100 to around $350... I didn't buy them, but if you're in the market for something like that, it's an amazing find.

The rest of the store is total chaos. Long lines, babies crying and children running wild though the racks. Merchandise is in complete disarray and it's nearly impossible to find what you're looking for...

The only way to shop at these stores is during the day on a weekday and only for shoes! :)

I really enjoy hiking here with Duncan because it's safe and he can go off leash - it's against the rules, but almost every dog owner does it... Duncan loves the trails and jumping in the pond and I'm loving getting out and hiking somewhere that's nearby and almost always nice weather...

Being from CA, I sometimes take this type of thing for granted, but it was a nice reminder when I was hiking with my friend, Rachel at Water Dog this morning and she turned to me and said "this is why I moved to California!" That's right, this is what CA is all about :)

Lunardi Foods

I usually shop at Lunardi's because it's not as bad as Molly Stones, but prefer to shop at Whole Foods if I'm in San Mateo because there's serious room for improvement here.

None of the fish or produce I've tried was terrible for what it is - commercial food flown in from around the world and not super fresh - but, it's certainly never been great either.

The bakery is good, but I'm surprised they don't carry any uber-healthy bread, since having options like sprouted grain has become quite mainstream.

I really love that they're one of the only supermarkets I've been to that carries Pinot Noir wines from the Willamette Vally in Oregon - these are the most amazing wines! But, I've had 3 experiences buying wines that they're selling at a deep discount being totally corked - it seems a little suspicious for it to have happened every time and definitely makes me wonder if they are doing this on purpose knowing that most people won't bother to bring it back - I haven't returned any bottles, but I do feel cheated out of the $60 or so that I've wasted on them...

I've also had issues with all of the flowers I've purchased here being old. They always fall apart within the first 2 days and recently some mums even fell apart one the drive home!

Also, I've had freshness issues with the sushi twice and don't recommend trying it... if you're there for lunch, opt for a sandwich instead, they do a good job on those.

Whether you've just biked over the mountains, or are out for Sunday drive, this is the perfect stop for all your picnic needs. Some of my personal favorites are:

Fresh baked strawberry rhubarb pie (amazing to take home and top with Strauss vanilla ice cream!)

Artichoke pesto bread with Harley Farms spreadable goat cheese

Cinnamon English muffins - take home to toast and butter!

All 'round awesome, home baked goods that really do taste just like grandma made them :)

I went to Ame for my birthday last year and had an amazing meal! I ordered the black cod, which was to die for! The decor is quite elegant, the wine was fantastic, the service was great and they definitely made it a birthday to remember. I'll be back soon.

Bank of America Headquarters

4 star rating

I've read that B of A somehow falls into both the highest & lowest  customer satisfaction ratings for banks... unfortunately, the two Yelpers who reviewed B of A HQ before me seem to have gotten the not so great end of the stick... I, on the other hand, have been banking with B of A since I was 18 and have had a fantastic experience! They always give me great customer service - even when my account balances aren't so great ;) and that goes a long way in my book.

Yesterday I set up my Socialbees businesses account (finally!) and the process was super smooth and easy. Today I had a snag with my PayPal merchant account and a B of A online banking rep helped to get everything sorted out and working perfectly in a jiffy! Now I'm ready for your credit cards, people... show me the money! ;)

Bagel Street Cafe

2 star rating

No doubt this is the best place near my new house in Boringame to get a bagel, but that's not saying much... the bagels are fine, but the toppings don't always taste quite fresh enough... they also seem to make a mistake on my order EVERY time, no matter how many times I tell them exactly what I want - this morning I told the lady making my sandwich 3 times that I didn't want mayo, trusting she'd done the right thing I took it to go and sure enough, when I bit into it... MAYO! NO!!!!!! I cannot eat mayo, it makes me really sick, so I had to chuck the sandwich and go for sushi - with no mayo.
