Kwan Downtown Chinese Restaurant
Category: Chinese
I've eyeballed this place a few times while out running errands and finally took the plunge. I ordered General Tso's chicken and some chicken Lo Mein; they were a little pricey, but when considering the size of the portions it's pretty reasonable. I ate about half of each and will definitely have some good leftovers.
The only bad thing about the Lo Mein was that there was mushrooms in it, but they were big enough chunks that I could easily eschew the fungus. I really liked the flavor of the lo mein, all too often lo mein is very bland and this had some nice full-flavoredness to it. The General Tso's chicken wasn't very spicey, but just enough to let you know what was going on. The combo of the two dishes worked really well, in my opinion.
The service was pretty good, too. I was helped at the counter very quickly and told that my order would take 10-15 minutes. When I was told that I thought it was a bit excessive, but barely 5 minutes later I had my food and was on my way to walking the 3 blocks home.

The ambiance alone is reason enough to go to this boutique Mexican restaurant. I was there for a light lunch and got the taco salad, which was probably the best I'd ever had. The chicken was amazing, and a little cilantro goes a long way.
Even before we ordered I knew it was going to be a quality meal as the salsa was really good. I assume it was "homemade," but I'm not sure.

Big City Soup

This is a great soup & sandwich joint right in the heart of downtown Salt Lake. They have several vegetarian, gluten-free and other choices. The ingredients are definitely high quality. Both the sandwiches and the soups are very good. They are a little pricey, but you do get what you pay for at Big City Soup!

Little World Chinese Restaurant

I went to this place with my friend Nathan on his suggestion that it was a great dive Chinese restaurant. A dive it is, and the food is good, too. Very inexpensive, and very entertaining.
When we walked in, one of the women simply pointed to a table and said "sit!" I busted out in laughter. When she came to take our order I asked a question and she either didn't understand me or didn't know I was talking to her, so Nathan answered me instead.
The food came out very quickly, and just after we finished our soup. The combos are super cheap for the mound of food they brought out.
The service isn't top notch, but with a place like this you can't really expect 5-star service. I loved their display case that had several of what looked like cooked ducks (may have been some other fowl), so I had to take a picture.

Great place to grab a quick and inexpensive lunch. The quality matches the price, but it isn't bad by any stretch. They have some great lunch combos that include several of their dishes. I had their yellow curry and was pleasantly surprised at how good it was for the price.
As others have said, it can be a bit busy for lunch, but the wait typically isn't very long and the service doesn't seem to suffer much even at the peak of their lunch rush.

This is a great place to catch a movie and a beer. They don't typically have movies on their opening weekend, but they aren't as far behind as the dollar theater, either. Some really excellent beers on tap and with the different specialty nights they have, there are great drink specials all the time.
In the theaters themselves are some couches in the back and in the theater seats are small bars to set your drinks on. It's a great concept that works really well.
I haven't had any of the food at Brewvies, but I understand it's good bar fare.

This is one of my favorite fast food restaurants. The Crispy Burritos are to die for. The Soft Taco Supreme is another excellent menu item. Get the Stuffed Mexi Fries if you're feeling a frisky!
It's nice to have a Taco Time at the mall that I most frequent. If you're at the Gateway and feel a little hungry, swing by the food court and stop by Taco Time.

I've had the pleasure of eating at Takashi a few times and it has been high quality every time. For the amazing quality of food and drink at Takashi, it is surprisingly affordable. I was recently there on a date, we had 2 bottles of Sake, 3 rolls and an order of Seared Sablefish, and the bill was barely over $40. I was really amazed at the bill as I had expected to pay more.

Hagermann's Bakehouse Cafe
Category: Bakeries
Wow. It was quite an adventure in Hagermann's.
The girl taking my food order didn't seem to have any idea what she was doing. She had to ask 3 different times what soups they had, this after actually looking into each soup cauldron. I was finally able to order a cup of potato & bacon soup and a ham, egg and cheese breakfast sandwich.
The food was fantastic. It really was good. But the service was so sketchy that it left a bad taste in my mouth. I'll give it a month or so and wait for the staff to figure everything out and give it another try.

When I got to the door the lights were out and it was clear that the business was closed. It's unfortunate that the incorrect time is plastered everywhere because i would like to try this spot.
