For a chain, they do a good job at disguising the fact. The only bad is that the waitstaff is all female which seems a little Hooter's to me and their poor outfit choice should have been retired back in 1995. Cuz I was rockin the knee socks and catholic school girl skirt waaaaaay back then. How bout some cute shorts/top and some chucks? That'd be way classier.

They have a fancy hand wash station that people seem to enjoy standing in line for.
Save your money. Go to Dan's.

Izzoz Tacos

Anywho.
Ok...so I went to Izzoz Tacos the other day with my husband. We are on a budget these days so we can't always afford a sit down, tip your waitstaff kinda meal. Even though Izzoz isn't exactly in our neighborhood we decided to give something south of the river a shot. I read all about the tasty fried avocado on yelp and that was all I needed to hear - well, read.
Izzoz doesn't disappoint in the filling your belly department. Pricier than we expected but worth it. (full disclosure: we were starved so we ordered more than normal which probably lends to the higher tab) Here's what we got:
(not all names are accurate but you'll get the idea)
the fried avocado taco - good - not my fav - but different
the portabella taco - oh yummy in my tummy awesome - my fav
the del mar - the tilapia grilled taco - this was really good - tip: ask for the sauce on the side as they are heavy handed with it.
the pulled pork - holy pig this was delish
the carne guisada (I think that is what it was - my husband got this one) - it was definitely a meat product - it was good too but i liked the pork one the best
chips & guac: props for freshness, but I like mine spicy and so felt it needed a kick of serrano pepper.
Atmosphere - super cute little trailer stop. The owner (John?) is so nice and I loved that he brought our food out to the table. I wasn't sure what the plan was but he made it easy.
So there you go. Go have a taco.
You happy now?

Kyoto Japanese Restaurant
Categories: Japanese, Sushi Bars
Neighborhood: Downtown
The service was friendly and fairly prompt considering how full it was even close to 10p. You'll fine a long sushi bar with a room of scattered tables in an open area and then a few more private seating areas where you dine seated on cushions on the floor.
We had the Samurai roll (Spicy Tuna and Jalapeno, Topped with crushed red pepper) which has a great spicy kick along with the Godzilla (Salmon, Avocado and Cucumber drizzled with spicy teriyaki sauce, covered with tempura flakes ) and Alaskan (Salmon, Avocado, Cucumber inside. Rolled in Masago) rolls. Be sure to try the appetizer Chicken Gyoza - chicken dumplings - amazing!!
The price was decent - total bill including alcohol and a few other pieces of sushi was just under $60. We'll definitely be back.
A great date night restaurant - then head downstairs to the Elephant Room for jazz.

Hey, I've been busy.
This place is so awesomely awesome. First, the staff is really nice and don't seem to mind helping you like they do at some coffee places. Second, their coffee is WONderFUL especially the Pacha Latte. Unfortunately, the Pacha Latte ingredient list is under lock and key so hope you aren't allergic to anything in it because they ain't talkin!
What else? The food is actually pretty kick ass. I had a pasta salad the other day and it came with a side for the lunch special. ($6.50) I chose the tamales and damn it was good. They served the tamales with a tofu onion dip. Just say yes.
The place has real character and feels warm and inviting. Patios in the front and the rear. Only draw back is the very limited parking space but ironically we've never had a problem. We've always managed to get that very last spot.
My new favorite coffee spot. Oh and who ever took my frequent flier card, shame on you!

Our loss I guess because boy, have we been missing out. The other night a friend and I went simply because I wanted someplace close to the house. Yellow cheese be damned.
So how surprised was I to discover that the food is really good. The flavors are excellent and we learned that much is made on site from scratch.
I took my husband there for lunch today and he was practically drooling over his plate and mine. I think the words out of his mouth were "I think I'll be coming here every day."
Best picks:
The brisket tacos (my favorite)
The tinga tacos are good too as is the grilled fish taco. They'll even let you get one of each with no hassle for substituting.
The rice and charro beans are fantastic and I could eat them alone.
The pozole soup was also good.
Today I tried the pork enchiladas which are really spicy. They come with a lot of cheese (only draw back as it doesn't really add to the dish).
Salsas: they serve red and green and they are definitely oil based - more so with the green.
Staff was really nice. The place is beautiful.

I stare in awe when I meet someone who has never been to Dan's. Are you kidding me? I ask them before telling them that Dan's has the Best burger in town.
So good, so good. Cheap too.
They will make your burger to order. I always ask for grilled onions and an extra toasted bun which they happily oblige. The fries are also top notch. I'm so happy Dan's is in my hood. There are more expensive, fancier burgers in town but they do not compare in the slightest.People thought this was:

Drive through and get the veggie burger & fries with a lemonade. So good!!
We need a P. Terry's that is more centrally located. Like next door to my house.

Date

So...after a full day of beauty at Anne Kelso (they really worked their butts off - Amanda, Natalie and Danny were fantastic) we walked that runway shaking what our momma gave us. I do wish I had tried the food. And the drinks. But I was just too hot to intake anything besides water.
Best part of the night was making new yelp friends. If I had to be stuck in an oven all night again, I hope it's with you all.
I have to give a minus star for the heat. It was wretched.
I hope you all enjoyed it despite the heat!
