Looking over the reviews already posted here. I note a trend: the high-rated ones tend to review the music, while the low-rated ones review the food and service. Guess what I'm reviewing...
I went to Don Quixote's recently when I was invited there to hear a band. Said band was great, but the restaurant was flat-out lousy.
We ran into our first problem when we went to get the tickets from the "Will Call" table. The guy at the table informed my friend that the tickets were Cash Only. (There had been nothing anywhere on their website when she reserved the tickets to indicate this, and she didn't happen to have $100 cash with her to cover the 5 tickets.) She was flustered at being caught off-guard, and the man handling the tickets was pretty snippy about it. Luckily, there was an ATM.
Once we were seated, it took ages for them to take our order. I understand they didn't have that much wait staff, but even allowing for that, it was still incredibly slow. Once they took our order, we waited ... and waited ... and waited. It wasn't until we flagged down a waiter - the only helpful employee we encountered all night - and inquired about our orders that our food miraculously showed up. We also had to re-order our drinks. All told, we were there for nearly an hour before we got our orders. And of course, it wasn't very good. The nachos I ordered were soggy, and the ground beef on them tasted burnt. The others reported that their food was no great shakes, either. (At least the complimentary chips and salsa were delicious.)
It was incredibly hot and stuffy. The attached bar has ceiling fans, but for some reason the main room - the one that gets packed crowds for concerts - does not. It wasn't until the band complained that they finally opened the doors and let some air circulate.
For some reason, despite the fact that this place features concerts almost every night, they've seen fit to wall off the back half of the room - which, of course, is where we were stuck, since apparently people showed up 3 hours before the concert to get the front seats. Luckily, there are two large doorways that have a view of the stage, and we were sitting by one. Unluckily, the patrons who WEREN'T sitting by a doorway pulled their chairs in front of us and blocked our view. Additionally, there aren't speakers in the back half of the room, which made it difficult to hear. (It didn't help that there was a group loudly talking behind us for half the show, whose response when we asked them to keep it down was to tell us to "get over it".)
The band I saw was wonderful, and I'll be happy to see them again. But I do not intend to ever return to Don Quixote's.

Whole Foods Market

I was looking for chocolate extract, which I've purchased there before. At first, the employee that I asked drew a blank and said they hadn't carried it for months. If she'd left it at that, I'd have been sorely disappointed. However, she offered to special-order it for me.
Two days later, she called and let me know the extract was in and on their shelf. I went in that night to get two bottles. When I checked out, the extract didn't register in their system. The cashier apologized, sent another employee to find out the price, and offered me a free bottle for my inconvenience.
After the other employee took a while, the cashier asked the woman at the Customer Service desk if he should give me both bottles for free. It was finally determined that the bottles cost $5 each, and the CS lady told the cashier that because the total was under $25, it was okay to give me both bottles for free! Just because the product hadn't been placed in their system yet! I was stunned by the offer, and happily took my free extracts.
Two more bonuses to this WF:
1) Despite their "Whole Paycheck" reputation, they do carry my favorite soup for a good $2-3 less than the same brand at other grocery stores;
2) They're the only place I've found so far that carries the amazing cookies from Tate's Bake Shop.
That plus their proximity to my home means I am a frequent WF shopper.

J T McHart's Pizza Restaurant
Category: Pizza
I grew up in Cupertino, and I've been going to McHart's pretty much since they opened. Now that I live in Campbell - 8 miles away - I don't go as often, but they're still worth the drive!
I am strictly plain cheese when it comes to pizza, and their cheese is heavenly! Great crust, great sauce, just delicious! (My mother rarely eats pizza, but she'll eat theirs! Heck, once I ran into my father there when we were picking up pizzas at the same time!) My boyfriend is from Chicago - so of course he grew up with amazing pizza - and he says I've gotten him "addicted" to McHart's.
Their service is also terrific; the owner still says hello, addresses me by name, and asks how I'm doing and how my family is whenever I come in.
I've tried pizzerias all over the Bay Area, and none of them have ever compared to McHart's. Is it nostalgia talking? Maybe a little, but nostalgia never tasted so good!

Our experience was mostly ruined by two young boys - apparently the children of employees - who chased each other around the tiny restaurant the entire time we were there, one of them shrieking at the very top of his lungs. The final straw for that one came when I was standing by my table and they barreled into me, knocking me forward. Good thing I had just put down the sodas I was holding ...

I went to this Quality Tune-Up when they first opened, simply because I found a coupon for an oil change in the paper and they weren't too far from home. This was in 2002. Since then, they have continued to earn my business. To wit:
- When my car came in with an engine problem, they diagnosed it but couldn't fix it. Since they couldn't fix it, they didn't charge me for their 30-minute diagnosis.
- I drive a PT Cruiser, which has a very unusual engine placement. (It's essentially put in sideways.) This makes repairs more difficult and it often goes over their estimated time. Nevertheless, I don't believe they have ever charged me more for a longer repair time. On one occasion, they actually cut their labor cost when a part cost more than expected, even though the repair took them an hour longer than they thought.
- My transmission just needed replacing. They had it fixed in half the time I'd expected, offered free labor if the new tranny goes out before the warranty expires (the warranty usually only covers the part), and covered the cost of a rental car for three days.
I once heard it said that a good repair shop is the one the dealers take their cars to. Well, I saw a Porsche with dealer plates in their garage.
All this, plus their always prompt and courteous service for oil changes and other basic tune-ups, are why I always recommend them to my friends and family, and why they get cookies from me at Christmas.

Heidi's Pie Restaurant
Categories: Diners, Desserts, American (Traditional)
My boyfriend, a friend and I went to Heidi's at about 3:30am Saturday morning. The restaurant was nearly empty, and we were seated right away. After that, however ... nothing. We decided what we wanted, closed our menus, and waited for our order to be taken. Were the waitresses busy helping other customers? No, they were standing behind the counter chatting. Why we didn't try to flag them down, I don't know. Chalk it up to being too tired to think clearly.
Finally, a waitress came to take our order. My boyfriend and I ordered pie slices and hot chocolate; my friend ordered steak & eggs and soda. And again, the waitress disappeared for ages. Now, my boyfriend and I expected to not receive our pie until my friend's food was cooked. We did, however, expect to get our drinks! But no, nothing. Not even water. We finally flagged down another waitress who re-took our drink orders and brought them right away.
The peach pie I ordered was pretty good (though not spectacular), and the hot chocolate was very nice. That earns this place another star. However, next time I'm looking for a late-night restaurant on a weekend, I'll hit the IHOP in Redwood City.

Gunther's Restaurant & Catering
Categories: Caterers, German, American (Traditional)
I've been there a few times, and have always found friendly staff, delicious sandwiches and cookies, and (sorry, Mom!) the best matzo ball soup I've ever tasted.
I think I'd go more often if their hours were a bit more amenable to my schedule. I do wish they didn't close at 2:00 on Saturdays, or opened at all on Sundays, but so it goes. If you just want a casual, tasty deli-style meal, Gunther's is the place to go.

I've sworn to try a different flavor every time I go (hey, having goals is important), but it's hard to not reorder the same delicious ones.
