Hollywood Wigs

Wow. I never thought I could get addicted to WIGS but thanks to Hollywood Wigs, I might just start picking some up.

I came here to find the perfect Lady Gaga wig (i.e. short platinum bob that didn't look fake) and read through a lot of Yelp reviews... finally settling on this shop.

Everyone in the store is so helpful, and I found the perfect wig in under 10 minutes. I also know how to expertly put my wig on without my black hair peeking through or goofy bumps underneath.

And the price was so reasonable! Unbelievable. They also custom-make wigs for a decent price relatively quickly.

You can also find eyelashes here, a great variety and starting at $3?

I used to buy wigs on eBay, but it's now so much more worth it to come into Hollywood Wigs and peruse the selection and see if the wig actually fits the frame of your face.

But most importantly, this wig (and my fake eyelashes dotted with Swarovski crystals) stayed intact and looked great the whole night I was shoved around West Hollywood on Halloween.

I'll definitely be returning to Hollywood Wigs, even if my boyfriend said my wig made me look like an Asian stripper.

Aroma Bakery Cafe

Category: Bakeries
Neighborhood: Hollywood

2 star rating

Hm. Would you rather have a beautiful menu with lush photographs of food or a simple sheet with text?

Only if the former resulted in equally appetizing food, of course.

Unfortunately this is not the case with Aroma Bakery Cafe. Despite its great location, ample patio and indoor seating, the food isn't up to par with these other characteristics.

I came here for brunch the first time and I had the spirella (sp?) which was decently good although I couldn't quite figure out what the cream sauce was... it was a bit oily. My boyfriend had a tuna salad and we found a bug in it.

The second time we came for dinner and I was craving soup. Specifically, I was craving soup in a bread bowl, and I didn't want The Farm's corn chowder, so I ordered the French Onion with the puff pastry sheet (which took an extra 15 minutes to bake, by the way) ,and when it arrived, I found it too salty. Too, too salty and there was too much cornstarch in it? The texture wasn't quite right. Moreover, the waitress said there would be a lot of cheese and a lot of onions, but in reality, there was a lot of cornstarch and a lot of salt. My boyfriend had the chicken pesto which was mediocre and also too salty.

The dessert menu is intense, and being a big advocate of the final course aka dessert, my mouth wouldn't stop salivating as I flipped through their Coffee & Dessert menu. The only dessert I tried last time was the caramel cheesecake, which was too sweet, even for me.

Such a shame because I really wanted to like Aroma. But you know what, they're open until 4am, so I probably need to come here buzzed or close to drunk. Doesn't food usually taste better at that time anyways?

Capitol City

Why in the world would I be yelping a sports bar?? Long story short I came here for a TV show premiere. I've had my doubts about a sports bar named "Capitol City", situated across the Velvet Margarita, Citizen Smith, next to the Hotel Cafe, the "Capitol City" text a very generic Arial Black.

The bar/restaurant is wide open, posh couches and sexy waitresses wandering about, and seemingly very fancy for a "sports bar".

Needless to say I didn't come to watch MNF or the like. I was here for a TV show premiere. And what a great decision, whoever made it, to do the showing here. The restaurant is littered with TVs, everywhere, speakers slightly obscured yet effective in pumping sound throughout the atmosphere. The booths were comfortable and extremely spacious (generous leg room), plus were suitable for at least 8-10 people per table.

The menu was surprising for a sports bar... appetizers including bruschetta (not so good) and tuna tartare on crispy rice (wtf? not bad though..). I had the veggie burger (rather tasteless although the salad was good) and a couple raspberry mojitos (good). Maybe I had too many raspberry mojitos. I was belting Katy Perry in the car on the way home...

So perhaps my expectations of Capitol City were very low prior to my visit, hence my pleasant surprise. I will probably return as I've been roaming around the Cahuenga area more and more lately, and this "niche" that Capitol City fits into (classy sports bar type) might work, after all.

Their tofu scramble is the best I've had (even compared to Blu Jam and Real Food Daily) so far, their breakfast selections pretty tasty (I've had the french toast and garden benedict). The food comes out quickly and service is fairly attentive. The red velvet cupcake is very yummy. The coffee has been burnt both times I've been, though I'm not sure if that's just the flavor of the beans or if it's just burnt.

I haven't come for happy hour, usually breakfast/brunch or last-minute dinner options, but it isn't ever very crowded when I'm here, and it's a great place to grab a quick, filling meal that won't cost you an arm and leg.

It's heaps nicer than the competing 24 hour diners (Kitchen 24 is more of a restaurant) but it's far too casual for a date. Unless you took your date to watch a concert that ended late. Then it's acceptable to bring her here.

I'm biased on the parking situation only because my boyfriend works across the street so we don't pay for valet at the lot on Selma/Cahuenga. The lot on Selma/Cahuenga is between $6-10 depending on the night you're around.

And even though Fred62 has pages upon pages of menu items and is also only 2 blocks from where I live, the quality of food is vastly different. But then again everything tastes good after 3am. Show owner comment »

Figaro Bistrot

Ever since I moved a few blocks over, closer to Vermont St., I find myself walking to Figaro every Sunday afternoon. Almost every Sunday. It's just too convenient.

I love sitting outside on the sidewalk, crammed next to another couple, inhaling their second-hand smoke. Smokers congregate outside. My policy is: if there is outdoor seating and the weather is fabulous, we're sitting outside.

I've always had great service here, and the food is served especially quickly. I strongly recommend the Eggs Florentine if you're addicted to Eggs Benedict like I am. The crepes are quite good, as well as their omelettes. But really, the Eggs Florentine is memorable; comes with a side of potatoes and salad... perfect.

What I enjoy most about Figaro, as opposed to other brunch places, is how LAISSEZ-FAIRE it is. If you're shopping up and down Vermont and you're a bit hungry, or even starving, it's easy to pop into Figaro, order something, eat and be happy. The prices are good for the amount of food you are served, and the waiters will come out with a dessert tray if you request dessert. For me that would be a bad idea as I would want the entire tray.

Unfortunately I'm not a huge fan of the coffee here so I always have to mix creamer into it. I'd stick with the cappuccino or an espresso. The bread they serve you is also quite delicious.

Figaro is easy, casual, quaint and perfect for lazy weekend afternoons. Oh... and I think I should add that street parking is actually not difficult around this part of town.

Rage

Rage was the first gay club I had ever been to; my friends and I came here after they stopped admitting guestlisted people at Myhouse... I don't even really like clubs too much but wow, I had so much fun at Rage!

My two straight guy friends had a lot of fun too, and we're thinking of going back maybe next week...

We went Thursday around 11:30pm and only paid a $5 cover charge. Drinks were moderately priced, I think I paid around $33 for 3 shots of Patron. I paid more at Area the weekend before.

The music is insanely loud but most of the songs are top 40's (mostly pop, not so much r&b/rap) and some random Britney, Spice Girls... 90's pop, all of which we all know the lyrics to, so it's fun to sing/dance after a couple drinks.

The gay boys really put my friends to shame with their dance moves, and even the girls seemed less sexy compared to the gay boys' antics.

There were more straight people than I thought, both guys and girls, and my friends and I actually made a few friends throughout the night.

Great place to come and dance after a loooooong week of work or stress or drama.

This is a brunch review. Have not been here for dinner or lunch ... yet.

Brunch: 4 words: CREME BRULEE FRENCH TOAST

I'm sure that's what they serve in heaven, because that is just a decadent and divine creation. Ingenious. Unbelievable. I'm still raving about it and it was weeks ago.

My friend ordered that. I had the craving for eggs, so I ordered the eggs benedict w/ lox. The eggs were perfectly soft on the outside and gooey on the inside; not too salty, as the lox provided the salty flavor. The English muffin perfectly toasted and carried the flavors of the egg and salmon. The only drawback was it was not served with sides. My plate looked quite empty, and I felt compelled to order something on the side (we started w/ the bread/jam platter, which was a great way to kick off the brunch).

Being an avid and loyal coffee drinker, I strongly suggest NOT to order the coffee here, it is so disgusting it actually wakes you up. And I drink coffee for the flavor.... not so much its effects.

The service was decent for Sunday afternoon, the restaurant wasn't very busy.

The interior is exactly as Max M. describes it: Think Ralph Lauren Home meets an East Hamptons brasserie. Country sophistication with a big open dining room that is gorgeous on a sunny weekend afternoon.

It would be fun to come here on a casual date as well, if you are willing to shell out a little more than average for Sunday brunch in LA.

El Rey Theatre

Wow.

The El Rey  is absolute live music perfection.

Comparable to the Nokia Theatre in NYC, the El Rey has a low stage, a great acoustics, generous standing room, decent drinks and a second-level balcony for those that just want to sit and chill from above.

I came here to see the ethereal Bat For Lashes aka Natasha Khan, and was blown away. I could not fathom seeing Bat For Lashes at the Music Box/Henry Fonda... the acoustics are so terrible there.

There isn't much for me to elaborate on as there are already 130 reviews before mine, but out of all the places in LA to catch live music, the El Rey is most definitely at the top of my list, and I'll be back in August to see Emiliana Torrini.

Madame Matisse

I unknowingly became one of those people who has to go to Sunday brunch religiously. Not church, but brunch. At a different spot, every Sunday. Let's blame it on the fact that I live in Los Feliz and there are so many irresistible and mysterious cafes beckoning for a taste. Yummy for my tummy but not so yummy for my wallet.

Madame Matisse is one of the tiniest brunch/breakfast joints I had been to among all the breakfast places I've been, and I ended up sitting at the counter w/ my 2 friends. We were at the counter staring awkwardly at the patrons seated on the sidewalk area. Yeup, those seats.

The menu is not too extensive, but eggs seem to be their emphasis here; featuring omelettes and scrambles and eggs with just about everything. I didn't feel like having an omelette so I just ordered the french toast (w/ the cinnamon swirl bread) with a side of scrambled eggs and fruit. One of my friends ordered the Bagel and Lox Platter; the other ordered a large waffle. It was a mighty huge waffle.

My french toast was most definitely VERY cinnamon-y, but not too sweet. The texture was good and this was served with an orange marmalade-ish syrup. The eggs were OK, but they were a bit too yellow for me to believe they were really, real eggs.

My friend's Bagel and Lox Platter looked like it could have been an appetizer, and my friend complained that it was not enough food. Anyway he's a fat kid (he says that himself) but I thought the portions were just right. I secretly wanted some of my friend's waffle; it looked so crispy and delicious. He said it was quite good.

Our waitress served us quickly and another waiter helped us when we needed water or napkins or anything else, even though they were packed on Sunday.

I would probably come back to try one of their omelettes, as in my awkward counter seat I was semi-staring at the omelette the woman was in eating in front of me and it looked tasty.

Dusty's Bistro

I drive by everyday on Sunset Blvd on my way to work and never noticed this place.. until I searched Yelp for places to brunch. Quite unassuming from the outside, but extremely cozy yet elegant inside.

They have a ton of great options for brunch; I'm not the wishy-washy indecisive type but at Dusty's I couldn't choose between the stuffed french toast... the crepes... or the omelettes.... everything looked so tasty!

My friend ordered a mimosa which she said was quite delicious; I just had plain old cranberry juice. Our food came out very quickly, and while I wasn't too crazy about my stuffed french toast (the toast itself was nice and chunky, but I wasn't digging the cheese filling...), the food was very fresh and I was ready to come back and try the crepes next time.

The prices are reasonable and the portions are good. I don't like to eat until I have to unbutton any buttons, but I'm not one to pay $40 for an egg with toast....

I will definitely be back and update my review the second time!
