First thing: They DO have the garage sale at this REI location. I saw a kayak for $150 that someone had returned after 4 years. You couldn't get a better deal on Craigslist--and that's awesome customer service (FOUR YEARS!)!

I've had pretty great experiences here. The informed, non-biased staff has helped me save money on purchase decisions (offering alternatives without sacrificing my quality goals). I'm not the kind of shopper who wants a lot of attention, but it was definitely offered and available whenever I was ready.

I'm new to road biking and have been able to pick up a lot of my supplies here for cheaper (and with better selection) than at the bike stores. Haven't used them for service, but I'm excited to take one of the "DIY bike maintenance classes.

That said, I haven't been to other REI locations yet. So I can't compare those.

This was the only vet I used--until recently. After reading Mel's review, I contacted this vet for information on my dog. He was due for vaccine updates and I wanted to get the list of which ones he was due for and the costs.

They recommended a list of about 7 shots and provided costs (yes, somewhat high).

In the list of 7, they included corona.  When I called other area vets, they informed me corona was no longer recommended and had not been for years. (Google "corona dog vaccine" and contact your vet for more info on this)

Additionally, a few of the shots (dep were available in one with a different medication (meaning less pokes for my pup!). The shot is "DHLPP" which protects against 5 things, including the Distemper and Leptospirosis ROVH had recommended as separate shots. Apparently, this is obvious information for most of the vet world. I'm not sure why ROVH does it like this.

I'm not mad about this place. I just think they're not on their game. I like my dog too much to accomodate that.

I switched to Gasgow and had a delightful experience. My review is here: http://www.yelp.com/bi...

After reading reviews on my current (previous) vet via Yelp, I decided to try Gasow instead--and I'm glad I did.
(The review of our previous vet and further explanation of my switch is here: http://www.yelp.com/bi...)

I took my dog there for vaccine updates. As a new patient, we were able to walk right in without an appointment.

We were quickly seen by the vet and assistant. Both were there at all times.  Both were very friendly and answered all of my questions, even anticipating ones I hadn't thought to ask!

The desk staff was extremely knowledgeable, friendly and pet-loving. Service was delightfully efficient (calling me the next day with lab results).

We have a new official vet!

Taco Tuesdays are discontinued. Sad face. Still a fan of Toast, overall.

I didn't like Bloody Mary's until trying Toast's garden version. Now I crave them.

Had one experience with a very rude host, but the rest of the staff is fine.

I've been to the Birmingham Toast twice so far:
Once for wine & tacos (Taco Tuesday!): House red and tacos of every meat
Once for breakfast: Tea & Huevos Rancheos
I love Mexican food and this place did not disappoint.

I first fell in love with the decor, but the food was great.

    Some tips:
-Be patient. There is often a wait in the morning.
-Don't accept a crappy table. It will completely change your experience. The waitress seemed a little annoyed when we requested a different table, but then we were sat in on the couches next to the fire place (probably the best seats in the place).
-Follow their theme nights. Taco Tuesday was a big hit. Tasted authentic and was cheap (for Birmingham).

Super knowledgeable staff. Jason took the time to teach me about each element of my new (used) bike, from parts to gear shifting. It was very low-pressure and I left with what I came for, comfortably.

I'd been shopping around different bike shops for a few months but never really feeling as comfortable as at this location.

and...best part...

This is one of the few places around with USED bikes!

This is, by far, the best dog park I've visited.

The dog dock is a blast and the ramps make it easy for dogs new to swimming to ease in. In the beginning, my dog needed a life jacket (yes, he sunk). But after a few visits and gained confidence, he swims with the rest of the pups.

On shore, the park is still fantastic. The play yards are huge, giving the dogs plenty of space to run. There are many shady spots with benches and picnic tables for humans. There are even clean bathrooms on site!

Tips:
-Be careful on the docks. They get pretty slippery and crowded. Leave your mobile devices on shore! (I may have fallen in once. It may have been hilarious, but that water isn't pleasant.)
-Bring water. For you and your dog. (They have some for the dog, but it's easier this way.)
-Check out the "appreciation" days for free entry.
-Pick up the annual pass. Support the park and save some money.
-You'll probably want to bathe your dog after, but don't let this detour your visit--totally worth a little dirt!
-Something to consider: Vets recommend the kennel cough vaccine for any dog visiting a dog park (or are boarded, etc).

Crust Pizza & Wine Bar

Food was fresh and fantastic, but I there a serious reason there are only two stars: The cost of the slice of bread was greater than the customer experience.

Let me explain...

My dining guest, a weekly regular at Crust, mistakenly allowed the top piece of bread from his ($9.50) sandwich to fall to the ground. No big deal--he just asked for a new one. However, this request was "too expensive".

Our server had to ask the manager to visit the table to authorize a new piece of bread. The manager sternly denied it, citing the expense of a piece of bread. I offered to pay for it, but my guest was too appalled at the customer service and ate his sandwich without a top.

It should be mentioned, however, that the server was gracious. I actually felt a little badly for him that his management was so misguided.

This is my favorite local theater--whenever it's not overrun by kids. I tend to wait until after the premier nights to catch a movie, so it's not that big of a deal.

Yes, it's a little pricier than other theaters, but relatively it's not much different.

My favorite thing about this place is the seats. They're memory foam or something and, of course, the arm rests are movable (yay snuggling or stretching out)!

I'm a huge popcorn lover, so I really appreciate the seasoning. I like the white cheddar one so much, I actually bought some for at home.

Good, cheap, fast.

Two dinners + soup ready in 10 minutes, for just under $17.

The experience:
We were looking for a place we could get relatively inexpensive Chinese to go and came across this place thanks to Yelp. We ordered sans menu and were happy with the results.

Don't dine in. There's only one table with folding chairs--not exactly a lovely dining experience.

We'll be back for yummy, cheap Chinese to go!

I enjoyed my visit overall, but I think I'd try other places before going back.

The place was overpriced for the quality and portions of the food. I had the golden dragon roll--which oddly didn't include actual eel. It was good, of course, but that struck me as odd.

I also had their "signature" long island. It tasted strong and had a little bit of a coconut flavor. Again, portions wise, overpriced.

The decor felt a little like a night club, but was perfect for our late night dinner.
