Normally consistency is a good thing.  Unless you're consistently disappointing.

I want to like this place.  It's right across the street from my office.  It's got mexican food and tequila.  I was hoping for big things when they dropped the "Agaves" from their name.  Like I said, consistently disappointing.

FOOD: This place has solid margaritas, but everything else is fairly mediocre.  I've tried the tacos, the enchiladas and even the torta.  The dishes are always haphazardly strewn together.

AMBIANCE: The acoustics of the place are noticeably strange.  For some reason it can be hard to hear the person across from you.  2 seats down... forget it, they weren't saying anything interesting anyway.

SERVICE: The servers have been trained to do an awkward upsell every chance they get.  I understand why they do it, though.  If the food is good, you normally have to stop me from ordering too much... I don't think they have that problem here.

The best meal I've had here is brunch.  If you're going to come here to eat, that's definitely your best bet.

Primo Patio Cafe

Good thing they put the word "patio" in the name because looking in from the street, you'd never be able to tell that the super narrow hallway with the funky decorations opens up into an awesome, sunny outdoor seating area.

The thing about this part of SOMA is that its generally uncomfortably windy.  Sure, its sunnier than other parts of the city, but you can't enjoy  a meal in the sun if your napkin is going to blow away.  But the fine folks at Primo Patio solved this dilemma by shielding their outdoor seating with a building on all four sides... genius!

I've been here for lunch many times and always have a great experience.  I'm normally all for trying new things, but the Jerk Chicken plate is such a perfect combination that I rarely even look at the menu.  And their sauce is so delicious that I'm convinced its bad for you (the good news for you health-conscious masochists is that the food is really tasty even without it).

The service is really friendly and you can enjoy your water or soda in a plastic cup that is bigger than your head (unless you have a really big head).

I used to get takeout from here at least once a week.  It's generally incredibly fast except for some days when the line can get long.  I stopped doing the takeout thing because I got tired of the lecture that accompanies trying to use a credit card at the front.  I'll definitely be back when I've got the time to sit down though! I love this place.  I've never had lunch here, but I've had dinner many times.  It's in the running for my incredibly prestigious "Best Dinner in SOMA" award.

The food is consistently good.  It's not too greasy (like the Indian places in the Tenderloin) but it still tastes good.  My favorites: Fish Tikka, Butter Chicken and Mixed Vegetable.

There never seems to be a wait.  Seems odd to me, but I hate waiting, so no complaints here.

The price isn't a steal but its reasonable and the portions are sensible.  (Do you really want lots of leftover Indian food anyway?)

Since its fun to be a critic, I will say that the service is a little strange.  It's not bad, and even though you're never quite sure who your waiter is, the food still comes and the water gets refilled.

Overall, 4.5 stars.

I used to come here almost every day when I worked nearby.  They make a mean bean and cheese burrito.

This is a solid go-to place.

The food isn't anything special but that's the point.  There's a lot of it and its not super expensive.

Its the kind of January night when all your friends want to get take out and watch movies.  But I don't do take out, so they were all dragged here because of my Yelp search skills.

The pitzas were definitely the highlight, very tasty.

Everyone was happy.
