Dos Toros Taqueria

Category: Mexican
Neighborhoods: Greenwich Village, Union Square, East Village

I've had Dos Toros Taqueria on my Yelp bookmarks for a bit now and finally got around to trying it yesterday. Initially, I was very impressed with the prices. I got the steak burrito with added guac (Only .92 extra? Take that, Chipotle!) while my girlfriend got the plain quesadilla. We also got chips and salsa and two $2.50 cans of Tecate. All for a total of $21! Not bad.

As for the taste...Wow. It was a pleasant surprise that the steak was so rich in flavor and so tasty. I've had a lot of burritos in NY and this really hit the spot. The whole vibe of the place and the food is definitely very West Coast. The beans were rich and plentiful and I loved that they melted cheese on the tortilla.

By the time we left, the line was practically out the door. I really can't wait to go back.

Gahm Mi Oak Restaurant

I'm not going to lie. This place was awful from start to finish.  It's actually tough for me to write this review, even.

Quick summary:

*There were 5 things on the 'picture book,' gross feeling menu.

*Food was awful, bland, and boring.

*My tiny water glass remained empty for the entire meal.

*Waited 20 minutes for our check.

*After finally stopping a waiter, he had no idea what I meant by asking where our "waitress" was. "Server?" No. "Check?" He vaguely got that. Native language aside, you don't know the word "waitress" and you're working in midtown Manhattan? Come on.

*After that incident, I really didn't expect this, but I think there's an understood rule in restaurant hospitality where if all the dishes you present to a customer go uneaten, you should ask if everything was alright with the food.
Plenty of places, that would have happened...Not "Gahm Mi Oak."

Lime Jungle

Why, oh why, has it taken me so long to write a review on the magical world that is Lime Jungle?

Ordered from them for so long when I lived near Lincoln Center. A few months ago, I moved to Hell's Kitchen so now I actually go there all the time.

The food is amazingly fresh and quite divine. My old staple is the Alba Salad. It's a healthy salad with shredded lettuce, which is always a treat, topped with avocado. I usually get it with chicken. It's filing and uber good. The margaritas at Lime Jungle are also so, so tasty. Burritos are great. Chips and Salsa are good but the salsa is just pico de gallo...No worries about that, though, because Lime Jungle has a full, and amazing, salsa bar. You MUST try the jalapeño cilantro Salsa. Seriously, I never knew it was made with jalapeños, and probably would have scoffed at the thought, as they are not my favorite of things, but damn. It is truly amazing. Salsa-wise, the chipotle salsa has a great smokey flavor. You really can't go wrong with any of these choices.

The ambiance of the place is great. Dim and tiny. It can certainly get cramped. I can see their vision working much better in a larger space.

So what's the bad? The only reason why Lime Jungle gets 4 stars instead of 5 is the service. It can be painfully slow and tedious to work with. I won't go so far as to say it's "bad," it's just not what you expect when you seat down to eat. I say that after eating their in person dozens of times.

The issue with the service is always one of two things. Either there is ONE person waiting on EVERY table in the joint (no exaggeration) or there are like 5 people waiting on EVERY table in the place, and not individually. One is not enough, the other is complete overkill with a huge lack of communication. With five'ish people waiting on all the tables, instead of them each taking a few, communication goes out the window and you keep asking a different person for the same thing twice. When there is just one server, they can barely keep up and are running around the place frantically. There have been MULTIPLE times when I've not been served my drink, usually a water so NOT a big deal, until I get my food. Completely unacceptable.

So yeah, that's an issue, a large one, that's been proven over and over again in my experiences but I keep coming back. The fresh Mex style food can't be beat in this area and the prices are great.

Check out Lime Jungle. You won't be disappointed with the food, but maybe the service.

Room Service

Room Service was a pleasant treat in the mixed bag world of restaurants that is 9th Avenue. Friends and I wanted Thai, which this street has plenty of, and so, using on my sweet Yelp'ing skills, we settled on Room Service.

First, the ambiance is great. We were seated near the front, which I didn't care much for, especially due to the drizzling evening, but that was a small detail. Everything is themed as if you were in a hotel. From the menus to the check, that is the goal of the place. It works well, but as myself and my party remarked, it was as if this place could have been serving any type of dish. Wouldn't have surprised me if they were a Mexican or Hamburger place.

They had a pretty extensive drink selection, ranging from about 10-15 cocktails, as well as a whole separate 10ish versions of a Mojito. I ended up getting a Cherry Mojitio, I believe. For the $13, it was was vastly underwhelming in terms of taste and alcohol content. Surprise, Surprise.

The menu had a large and extensive selection, as well, which is always a pretty good thing. The appetizers all seemed fresh and original. I got the dumpling soup that was in a clear broth and for the $3 or so, it was very tasty and worthwhile. For an entree, I settled on the Peanut Sauce Fried Rice And Big Shrimps Satay. This was a mountain of amazing rice with a great peanut sauce that was filled with, my favorite, raisins. The shrimps, all 4 of them, were tasty but a tad overcooked. Overall, a great and creative dish. Very filling but, then again, it was a mountain of rice.

So would I go back? It's around the corner, has great ambiance, and I'll probably end up at a place where my drinks cost the same as my entree anyway, so, yeah, sure...I'll be back.

FSC Barber

After countless years of searching Manhattan for a solid place to get my hair cut, my urn-religious prayers have been answered. My experience was amazing. Just amazing. Great environment with laid back attitude.

The wait was pretty short, even at 7:15pm. I had read they closed at 8 and the last appointments must be taken before 7:30pm. This was true and something to keep in mind. I was finally paired up with Carlos who was very welcoming and attentive about what exactly I wanted my hair to look when I left...That is the the idea, correct? He paid attention and made sure it was looking good to me along the way. He spent a nice amount of time making sure the sides of my head didn't have any stray hairs, something your RARELY ever find someone actually do so diligently.
He knew exactly what he was doing and did it with such precision you'd usually have to pay twice as much for.

You see, that's the beauty of FSC. It's for guys who are savvy enough to not accept a random "Supercuts" as a real haircut or get duped by that "Jean Louis David" shit. FSC is for guys that can appreciate the old fashioned barber shop style (jokes, finesse, shaving, stories, and liquor), yet care enough to want to get that "salon effect" that the women in our life are always after.

I will definitely be back. In fact, I actually look forward to it. I will ask for Carlos again, but oddly enough, walked away with a strange confidence in trust in probably any member of their staff, so I wouldn't mind someone else's service.

Check it out, for sure, but just don't tell too many of your friends, okay?

Meze Grill

I'd wanted to try Meze Grill for a few weeks and I don't know what clicked tonight but I stopped in after a workout and, boy, am I glad I did. I'll admit that I'm a relatively new in accepting this type of food into my life. I've always shunned away from it with an "Ew" feeling. I know, ridiculous, right? Not until recently have I started to slowly embrace it and realize it's not so complex and upset-stomach-inducing as, just an example, Indian food. I don't know why I thought this way, I just did, okay? Maybe it was the word "falafel." Typically, in Manhattan, this food is served on a cart that also serves hot dogs, so it's just been something I've stayed away from. Anyway, as you have read you can either get your chicken, steak, or falafel in a pita, on two different kinds of rice, or on lettuce, which this genre of food loves to call a "salad." I went with the bulgar wheat rice bowl option with chicken. The chicken was very pink (the good kind of pink chicken, I suppose) and was being cut off a skewer in the back. It looked really good. I wish I could have gotten a look at the steak. I got onions, tomatoes, and lettuce on top with tahini drizzled on it. I was informed it came with pita chips or pita bread, and I got pita bread. I asked for some of "that" which was the SPICY Hummus. For once, something I ordered that was "spicy" was actually spicy, and good, as well. They were very open about any kind of additional sauce on the side, at no extra charge, something that's very rare these days and they should try to maintain.

Overall, my bowl was very delicious. The only thing I had wished is that there was a bit more chicken. The pieces were small, and because of that, I felt there should have been more. Maybe it was just because it was towards the end of the night? Not sure.

Will I come back? Well, it's close, good, fast, friendly, flavorful, and might be a really nice change every once in a while.

I'd recommend you give it a shot. At least when it's finally a huge chain you can either tell everyone that you ate at the original one years ago and LOVED or HATED it, right?
