Mojo Coffee

Neighborhood: West Village

4.0 star rating

It's the place I don't want to tell you about but liked so much that I had to.  After going to several Village coffee shops (including Starbucks) this Wednesday evening, I finally found a place to sit--at the smallest one!

Decor is great, though I suppose one of the posts was right about the table space not being very functional for laptops.  Doesn't matter.  Inconspicuous, cozy, and alive but not crowded.  It's the type of city find that brightens your mood on an ordinary New York day.  I feel like a child on Easter that found the plastic egg with a dollar inside!

(Note: It doesn't get a 5 because I didn't try much here but a plain coffee.  Don't worry, Mojo, you still have a chance for an upgrade upon a future visit).

B&T without the B&T clientele. Have been swindled for bday parties before in NYC buy this place is up there. For a place in TriBeCa with 0 to no competition, M15 takes itself too seriously. Employees spill drinks on you and don't seem to care. The bouncers are generally considerate, but bartenders are high and security just tosses people out without even a Judge Judy type inquiry.

The Johnny Utah of Boston but better.  The entrance and first bar make you think it might be nicer than it is, but at any rate, a Liquor Store is a fun time.

I loved the number of bars and easy access to drinks.  The bartenders didn't hurt either.

Overall, good music (though repetitive) with a lot of mashups.  A bit trashy, but how can you say no to bachelorettes gyrating on stipper poles and enthusiastic bull riders?

Le Souk - CLOSED

Even though I don't hookah, I really like this place. The door is a bit annoying for guys after midnight, but one of the bouncers can be persuaded. It helped that on one night a girl came out of the bar with a full-sized baseball bat hanging out of her bag. My two guy friends and I looked at the doorman and said dumbfounded, "Really? You let her in? Alright, we're done here." Of course, he had to chuckle and let us in.

Anyway, the music is different with a blend of Middle-Eastern/East Asian, Dance and Hip-Hop. The crowd's relatively diverse and not B&T. Best part might be that even on a Sunday and Monday night (went there on my last bday on a Monday) the place is bumping.

Great for after work drinks.  Downstairs you still get the after-work social crowd without the suffocation of typical after-work midtown bars.  Go upstairs for a quieter, more intimate round of drinks.  Good selection of beer.  Bar food was very good.  Can't comment on the real food/meals.  Unremarkable but pleasant decor.  I definitely recommend as a place to go with coworkers.

Glass - CLOSED

Glass is like the uncool younger brother of Marquee, which is okay because in the grand scheme of things, they're both pretty uncool underneath their pretentious exteriors (think, "O'Doyle Rules!").  I've sadly been to Glass twice.  Both times empty.  Both times a bust, except that I had friends with me, and we made the best of it.

Don't go here.  There are plenty of better bars nearby.  As you can see from the reviews, it's the meatpacking district/chelsea rejects' bar.  And doesn't imply anything negative about the 'rejects.'  No, it just means that in Meatpacking/Chelsea, bouncers don't appreciate the other side of the pillow.

Canal Room

I remember once reading a review for Canal Room off Yelp's grandma, City Search, that read, "one of the darkest crowds I've ever seen."  I naively didn't get this comment at first, but after going there, I'd agree.  And it was fine.  The reason this place gets two stars is the cover and the fact that it's just one big room - like celebrating New Year's at Roseland Ballroom, which I have had the misfortune of doing.

Admittedly, it was fun to see people trying to rap the lyrics of underground hip-hop that they had never heard and to watch the humanly impossible 1970s dance moves on "Soul Train" as it was projected onto a screen.  I guess in some ways, this place is just trying to bring back the style and class of a golden age in this country:

Comic Strip Live

Definitely top 3 or 4 standup comedy clubs in New York.  I've been several times, and though, I probably prefer Gotham and Comedy Cellar in terms of decor, this place is just as intimate and still nice enough.  The real draw, of course, is the talent.  It's about the same as the other two places I mentioned, but I think you do get better surprise acts here.  Most places wind up sticking to the schedule on their websites, but 2 of the 3 times I've been to the Strip, a surprise guest has come on.  Granted, they're no Chris Rock or Jerry Seinfeld, but still, it's nice to see a well-known face.

Tip:  Buy discount tickets to reduce your "cover."  Also, this place is easier to reserve than the downtown spaces, yet it still fills up for a good atmosphere.

Really a 3.5, but I rounded up.

I don't think the big club experience is ever very good.  Over time I've realized that the smaller venues with a good DJ are incredibly better.  That said, I thought this place was actually decent.  I think it's horrendously overpriced, but it had great variety in everything.  People:  gorgeous model-like girls from abroad mixed with cute girls next door from jersey and queens suburbs.  Music:  solid house/trance on the large floor and good mix of old and new hip-hop on the top floor.

All reviews, especially ones for clubs, are highly influenced by particulars on the night of a given visit.  If you went home with someone, you're probably going to be all about this place.  I can say that the night of my visit, I didn't have an exceptional time, but I objectively liked the venue overall.

Abbondanza's - CLOSED

I was told this is the best sandwich place in NYC so my expectations were high when I visited.  I went in and looked confused for a bit.  Luckily, it wasn't crowded so the guy behind the counter asked me what kind of meat.  After I told him, he asked, "I make it nice?"  To which there really only is one response, "Sure."

He really did make it nice.  Truly one of the best sandwiches I ever had.  I recommended the place like a fiend thereafter.  Friends have since told me the pizza is also amazing.

Unfortunately, it does only get 4 out of 5 stars because sometimes the guys behind the counter refuse to "make it nice" and require you to come up with your own mix of toppings.  The one time I did that, I really felt as if I wasted my $8 on the sandwich.
