Quaker, Steak, and Lube
Category: American (Traditional)
I've eaten at this location twice. The first time I had a lunch special of mild wings and slaw. I was pleased with the food and thought it represented a decent value. When I returned at dinner time with my husband, it wasn't as good an experience. His fried pickle spears were tasty, but his burger was very low quality. Possibly his mistake for trying a burger served with wing sauce, but the vinegary taste of the sauce is not a good combination with mushrooms and swiss on a burger. The wings I had at dinner were quite a bit smaller and more pricy than the ones I had earlier for lunch. We racked up a pretty pricy check, and definitely won't be back.

Half Day Cafe
Category: Breakfast & Brunch
Neighborhood: Wyoming
I can't believe I'd overlooked reviewing Half Day until I saw the latest review. A friend and I've been meeting there at least once a month for several years. Everything about it is outstanding, from the tasteful, comfortable furnishings to the cheerful, efficient servers, to the friendly, personable owner, to the ample breakfast and lunch menu which should have something to satisfy every taste. The only down side is its popularity, which can lead to a wait for a table if you don't time your arrival carefully.

Taz Restaurant
Categories: Middle Eastern, Hookah Bars
I've been to Taz several times, always when the restaurant was not busy. Haven't encountered any problems with service. The menu now states that grilled items take 15-20 minutes to prepare. As another reviewer noted, they have the best gyro in town. It's huge, cheap, and is loaded with tasty toppings.

Wow, seven reviews, all within a few minutes of each other, all by "satisfied customers" from whom Mr. Lawrence is the only review. Personally I'd be worried about having an attorney with multiple personality disorder if I got this guy to represent me.

Blue Gibbon Chinese
Category: Chinese
Neighborhood: Avondale
Afrer some less than stellar experiences over the years, hubby and I had avoided the Gibbon for some time. However, we were looking for a place open on Christmas Day, so we gave it another try. They really seem to have stepped up their game. Service was quick, efficient and courteous. As other reviewers have noted, they serve mostly Americanized Chinese food, but on this visit everything was carefully prepared with good-quality ingredients. Prices were reasonable. We're going to put them back on our regular rotation.

Goodwill Industries
Category: Department Stores
I shop at this store regularly and consider it pretty much the Holy Grail of thrift shopping. Careful searching will often yield the kind of women's clothing sold at places like Dillard's and Macy's for a typical price of $4 or $5. Everything is always freshly laundered (which also provides jobs for the disabled). The store is well-organized, well-lighted and has wide aisles.

VCA College Hill Animal Hospital
Category: Veterinarians
Neighborhood: North College Hill
A top-of-the-line vet business, don't be discourated by the older suburb where it's located. Although I've never needed them for a serious illness of a pet, I can vouch for the quality of their routine care for cats. All the employees are efficient and very professional in their demeanor. The facility is well maintained and extremely clean. As usual, you get what you pay for--their services are pricy. Note that they do offer a 10 percent discount for the Golden Buckeye card, something which amounted to real $$$ when we had kittens spayed and neutered.
Hubby and I had not been here for several years, but were looking for a nice place for Thanksgiving dinner, perferably one with alternatives to the traditional fixings. Overall we were satisfied, especially given some of the problems that confront restaurants on holidays. Service was good. Unfortunately we always forget that smoking is still permitted in Kentucky, until we're confronted with the unpleasant smell wafting over our food. We're not militant or anything, just really prefer a smoke-free atmosphere while we're eating.
Our crab-stuffed mushroom appetizer and chopped spinach salad were tasty and well-prepared. Hubby reported being happy with his grilled salmon. I had a pasta dish prepared with lumps of crab and several large shrimp. I didn't notice when I ordered that the shrimp would be breaded and fried. The breading was extremely thick and tasted like the oil had been used a few times too often. Probably a cost-cutting measure to make the shrimp look extra-jumbo on the plate.
Chart House is pricy, given that it's somewhat upscale but not really what you'd call "fine dining." Two cocktails, an iced tea, one appetizer, one salad and two entrees ended us up with a total tab including tax and tip of $130.
We were VERY ANNOYED that they basically force you into valet parking, having closed off their entire parking lot to the public. It's not so much the tip we mind, we just don't like turning over our car and keys to someone else.

Jungle Jim's International Market
Categories: Grocery, Department Stores
The Jungle has a lot of things going for it, but I suggest caution when purchasing seafood. I just bought the $30 a pound cooked lobster and when I got it home discovered it was just this side of completely spoiled. When I phoned to see what I needed to do to get a refund, the seafood manager argued with me, saying it had been cooked fresh just hours ago. He did agree to a refund, but it's disgraceful they were selling the stuff in the first place.
Incidentally, several months ago an employee in that department told me they got their shipments of the cooked lobster on Tuesdays. Product a week old would be a lot more consistent with what I ended up with than "cooked this morning."

Mike is right--Big Art's has some of the finest barbecue around. Check the hours because it's not open all the time, and go early, because the place is small, somewhat crowded and it can be hard to get a table.
Art serves a chicken dish--Chicken Colerain--that's not even smoked or barbecued that's actually my favorite thing on the menu. It's an enormous piece of white meat smothered in mushrooms and a sauce that's to die for. The soft, salty rolls are another favorite of mine.
