This is a great spot to take the kids for some fun public ice skating! Watch all the kids spin and do tricks ... they have NO FEAR! It's so much fun to ice skate ... and make a fool of yourself. But the best part, in my opinion, is people watching. Check out all the old DUDES who are on the ice doing the moves. Slick, dude, so slick.

I can't believe how incredibly yummy this corn is. I was born and raised in Pennsylvania, out in the sticks, where everyone grew their own corn and had the corn stand on the corner, but this is so good ... so sweet. So much flavor ... so well-worth the line!

We buy ours at the Binford Farmers Market on Saturdays ... and are sad when the market ends in October. I'm glad we're seeing this stuff around even more ...

I agree with others that I almost don't feel "grungy" enough to shop here. You know, I feel too "mainstream" to even enter, though I have, and was quite pleased with the service. Nobody was frowning when I bought a Peter Gabriel CD, but I noticed that almost everything in the store is for bands I had never heard of. Maybe I'm too old already. Maybe I'm just too clueless. But in all, I like to shop local, and from the amount of LUNA bumper stickers I've noticed in this city, shopping local is catching on.

Broad Ripple Vintage

Just went here this past week for the first time. I have to admit I don't usually shop at vintage stores, but now I'm asking myself WHY??
I found at least 15 things I wanted. I ended up buying only a couple, promising myself I'll head back soon.
Bought my sister a great black shirt that looks like something a painter would wear (I don't know how else to explain it, but it's got some buttons on the front and is long, like a frock?) and I got a really cool silver and turqoise ring for my other sister. Great place to shop for gifts! I am heading back soon with some girlfriends...we could spend hours here!

Dick's Bodacious BBQ

Dick's is a good place to get some good ole Texas barbecue, but it's not as good as the real deal. But then, nothing is!

I like the pulled pork platter with corn muffins and potato salad and beans. I'm sorry to say that one of my favorite parts about Dick's has always been that they serve SWEET ICED TEA ... just like when I used to live in North Carolina. Yum! In my opinion, you can't have iced tea unless it's sweet, and you can't have bbq unless it's Texas-style.

Dick's is a close second to Dave's Famous ... even though that's a chain, I favor their sauce.

My kids go to Mary Castle Elementary, and so far, we have enjoyed everything about it ... and are glad we decided to shop around the school districts before moving into a house.

Why do we love it? We get to know the teachers very well through Web sites, newsletters home, e-mails back and forth, and Open Houses and similar school events. The school is small enough that it already feels like everyone knows everyone, or at least has the opportunity to get to know each other. We have Back to School Nights, Movie "Knights," holiday events, end-of-school music shows, etc. The kids love it!

If you are shopping around for a school district, look at Mary Castle. You won't be let down!

Castleton Square

Neighborhood: Fishers

The Castleton Mall is on the upswing, with a brand-new outdoor shopping area with such fun finds as Spicy Pickle, Johnny Rockets, H&M, and Borders. The new movie theater anchors this new outdoor area, and is huge, clean (it's new....give it time) and a great place to catch a movie. Beats the old movie theater that closed down the road. Yikes!

Castleton is still a huge step down from The Fashion Mall, but it's come a long way just in the past few years. I love The Loft, Fossil, Auntie Annies pretzels, Macy's and Dick's.

In the end, it's still a mall. But it's getting better.

Marco's Restaurant & Lounge

An old friend took me to Marco's for the first time, because apparently I was the only person in the entire city who had no idea what "Cheap Meat Night" was all about.

I went. I saw. I ate. I agree. It's worth it.

Tuesday nights are the night to enjoy the filet, potato and salad for $10. Very filing and a lot of fun. Very busy, though. And for some reason, very dark and very loud.

I was surprised where the restaurant is ... you'd miss it if you didn't know it was there. It's a bit of a dive.

Bonefish Grill

Category: Restaurants
Neighborhoods: Indy Metro, Castleton

4 star rating

Bonefish is still one of our favorite seafood places, even if it's a chain.
Here's why:

It doesn't have a chain feel to it. The food is presented nicer than most restaurants, the service is good, the restaurant is pretty inside, and the fish is fresh and yummy every time.

The Bang Bang shrimp appetizer and Key lime pie dessert are worth making the trip for alone.

We've even been lucky enough to get free meal coupons in the mail that we've used. Can't beat that!

For the price, which is so reasonable, Bonefish beats any of the more expensive spots any day ... just as good and cheaper!

Bd's Mongolian Barbecue

Category: Barbeque
Neighborhood: Indy Metro

5 star rating

I just have to review BD's--even if it is a chain. The biggest reason being it's one of the only places we can go as a family and actually have a good time.

It's difficult--if not impossible--to take three young boys out to dinner without fighting, someone under the table, someone spilling something, etc. But at BD's, the fun is in the making of your dinner. And the kids get a huge kick out of the entire experience.

It's fun to pick all your ingredients and stack them in the bowl, then get your sauces ready to head to the grill. There, you get to watch the sweaty grillmasters take over ... flipping and smoking your food till it's a perfect blend of yumminess. Boy, is it hot! Did I mention the grillmasters are SWEATY? Um, yeah. Best is when they crack an egg with their long, silver flippers. Quite impressive!
