In Riva

Categories: Italian, Pizza
Neighborhood: East Falls

5.0 star rating
Update - 1/21/2012
Yummy, yummy, yummy I have cheese in my tummy!  My second trip to In Riva was almost as stellar as the first.  My waitress was all smiles and professionalism, but the service was not on par with my first visit.

No matter, my cheeses were splendid, the bread toasty and fresh, and the brussel sprout pizza still has my mouth watering.  I can literally walk to this place, so I bummed it in sweats, but this someone with a bit more class would have felt out of place wearing the same.

What a great addition to East Falls!  Semi-casual atmosphere, fresh delicious food, and incredible service... I mean incredible!  I can't image how our server could have been any more attentive.

We went here on a Friday night without a reservation and were seated promptly.  They brought out seasoned pistachios and garbanzo beans while we waited--yum!

    We enjoyed:

    - tasty cheeses served with fire roasted bread
    - a crab appetizer... so good
    - spinach pizza
    - salad

Everything was splendid.  We will definitely be back.

...and we're back.  The internet that is.  I'm at the Trolley Car now, and can affirm that the internet is now fully functioning.  The coffee is also quite tasty.  Go Trolley Car Go!

I was just kicked out of this cafe.  I should point out that that hours listed on Yelp are inaccurate.  The Trolley Car website indicates that they close at 9 Monday thru Thursday, and I can dejectedly confirm that this is the case.

Nonetheless, I had another pleasant experience here with a rather important caveat...

    The internet sucks.

Neither I nor the guy next to me were able to get a connection in the patio.  On the suggestion of my (very nice) waitress I moved closer to the cafe itself, but to no avail.  Mind you, the cafe is tiny and patio area relatively  spacious, so sitting outdoors is the norm.  Besides, the problem seemed to be with the service itself and not the signal.  Who knows, I'm not computer expert.

I appreciated the yummy peach ice cream on the patio with my doggie, but unfortunately did not end up getting work done.  Oh well.    Show owner comment »

I just had a perfect breakfast at the Trolly Car Cafe!

I just moved to East Falls a few weeks ago, and have been exploring the area.  I've been twice now and this place is truly a gem.

The spinach and feta frittata with homefries was delicious, the outdoor seating was cozy and gets a great review from my dog, and the waitress elevated the experience from a good 4 to an excellent 5.  She brought me water for the dog, was very friendly, and was prompt.

I have read other complaints about price.  My meal came to twelve dollars with tea.  I mean, I won't go every day, but it seems perfectly reasonable for a Sunday breakfast.  When I went there were patrons, but it was certainly not crowded.

What is wrong with y'all?  ...or is something wrong with me?  My meal was so underwhelming that I'm still sitting here wondering what it is that everyone else ordered that was so delicious!  I may go back just to try again because I can't understand how I could have had the same french toast everyone else was talking about.

My boo and I anticipated the 30-45 minute wait, so that wasn't so much of a big deal.  In fact, they seated us early.  ...and I was SO excited about the "amazing place they've been saying such good things about on Yelp".

Dry, dry, dry!  That's the only word I can find to describe the terribe french toast I ordered.  I made my own french toast today as a point of comparison, and I'm no Rachel Ray but I'm pretty sure I'm giving Sabrina's a run for their money.  The omelette my boo ordered was perfectly fine, but not a reason to leave the house.  The highlight was definitely the order of sweet potato fries dashed with powdered sugar.

Overall, meh.

Save your money and make your own breakfast, sans wait.

I've never seen a Chinese person buying food from a Chinese carry-out, which I find highly suspicious!  ...could it be that fried chicken smothered in "General Tsa's" sauce isn't an authentic Chinese dish?  Nonsense!

The General Tsau's chicken at Hong Kong Garden was hot, greasy, and plentiful.  The bill came to $9.64... but all we had was $9, so that's what we paid.  I certainly wouldn't go out of my way to visit this restaurant, but it will suffice in a "Man, it's10:30 and I'm starved" pinch.

This place is like an episode of Jersey Shore--greasy and a low brow... and yet delightful!

Is there anything more sinfully tasty than a plate of General Tsao's chicken, fresh from the fryer?  I think not.  This is definitely cheap carry out at it's best.

I recommend the General Tsoa's and the veggie lo mein.  The crab wontons were good, but a bit creamier than what I've had in the past.

They apparently also own the laudromat next door, and are willing to shamelessly advertise for it on their Chinese food menu, "We have washing and folding service."  Love it.

I continued to frequent this barber for years after that first haircut in 2007, and was never disappointed.

Lee is a former stylist, so if you are in the market for a professional stylist type of cut on the cheap... you just hit gold.  Thank you Lee for years of great haircuts!

Maybe I was feeling adventurous. Maybe I'm just cheap.

I'm not sure what lead me to Leon's Barber Shop when I wanted to chop off inches of my hair, but that is where I went.  The gods must have been on my side, because I left with a sweet haircut.  Overpriced stylists?  Never again!

Is the mic on?  Attention:  How in the hell do you hate on a plaza?  Better yet, how do you hate on a well-landscaped plaza that hosts a ton of free events?  Seriously, is there some other plaza that I don't know about that's going to throw a Michael Jackson tribute party, have an outdoor market each week, host Questlove from the Roots, and feature a big ole screen to watch Phill's games?

Someone please tell me about this OTHER place because clearly I'm missing out.

Otherwise, the Piazza is one of the coolest places that Philly has going with or without the excess of hipsters.  Like, so what... let them be hipsters.  Shoot, you're probably a hipster yourself.  So, go pedal your little road bike over to the Piazza you hipster!  I know I will.

You know the stereotypical pushy car dealer?  Now, imagine the exact opposite of him and you will have the guy who rented me my bike.  He pretty much just waited while I pondered aloud whether or not to rent a bike despite the threatening clouds.

"I'll be here later if you want to come back," was his advice.

...and I did come back.  I had a great ride along the trail and across the city on a bike that was in great condition.  I probably would have preferred a road bike for the amount of riding I did, but it definitely served it's purpose.

When I got back he gave me a 1/2 price coupon for the next visit.  Ten bucks for an all day ride... nice!

Update:  Holy shit!  Okay, so I am updating this within an hour of writing my first review.  Why?  I just went back for DESSERT.  Oh yummy!  The pizza is your basic crap pizza, but the tiramisu is en par with tiramisu I have had in fine restaurants!  Delicious.

Even the owners of this place wouldn't give it 5 stars... but it's hard to imagine disliking it enough to give it just one.

This place is exactly what it sets out to be... a cheap spot to grab a slice of pizza.  I'm eating a slice now and I won't be calling my mom about it, but I will be eating the whole thing.

The only thing that pushes them into the solid 3 star category for me is the surprisingly diverse dessert menu.  The fridge is stocked with slices of red velvet cake, cheese cake, sweet potato pie, and a few more.  You can tell they partner with a local bakery for those, and that's pretty exciting.  In fact, I just polished off the pizza (yeah, I know, that was fast) and may walk back down for dessert.

I had a great experience at Firehouse today.  The people are nice, laid back, and willing to help anybody without any snootiness or pretension.  You can be the hipster with your road bike (aka me) or an older woman like the one in line behind me who just wanted to get from here to there on her mountain bike.  A+
