Aladdin Restaurant
Categories: Mediterranean, Middle Eastern
Neighborhood: Clairemont
These guys used to have a location at the UTC food court before their lease was upped to $10,000 a month. Present day...Aladdin is still providing the same great salad though the quick service is no longer there.
THE Salad - Fresh romaine lettuce, Feta, Pistachios, great Moist Chicken, Tomatoes, homemade Balsamic dressing, and that pita bread! It seems so simple but the flavors are complex.
Things to know -
- Price is high ( 11.75 for the Chicken Salad), so know that before going into this experience.
- I've asked for Shawerma on top instead of Chicken and have never had a problem. It's a great variation to a classic.
- Parking SUCKS, place gets very busy for lunch. Get there before 11:30.
Major positive karma to Heather (hostess/waitress/everything).
It was pandemonium for lunch on a Friday and Heather took my to-go order, got my CC, got my food, and double checked my order before handing it over to me. BEST service I've had in long time.

Jo-Ann Fabrics & Crafts
Category: Fabric Stores
Neighborhood: Oceanside
In any case, this place is a lot smaller than the Jo-Ann in Temecula. Unfortunately, this particular shop is located in a dilapidated mall with at least 50% vacancy. Hey at least there's a lot of parking.
In all seriousness there is a lot of fabric and crafts stuff.
The best thing about Jo-Ann is the nice section of impulse buying opportunities before the cash registers. They have NECCO wafers! I'm sold.

Grocery Outlet
Category: Grocery
Neighborhood: Oceanside
Grocery Outlet is loaded with name brands, usually stuff that didn't sell well, discontinued items, or food items fast approaching spoilage dates. I would say it's very similar to 99 cent city and Big Lots because there's a bunch of diverse "stuff" to pick through. It's definitely worth an hour of your time.
Know this!
- Trippy music blasting throughout the store, circa 50 and 60's. Major head trip..
- Some of the notable brands are Harris Ranch Beef, Scharffen Berger chocolate, and Häagen-Dazs ice cream.
- CHECK expiration dates. I found a few items that expired in January.
- Not everything is a "great" deal, some items cost the same Wal Mart.
Goodbye friend.

Agrusa's Super Sandwiches
Category: Sandwiches
Neighborhood: Escondido
The place is small to say to least, it's basically a takeaway business. The sandwiches are toasted here but can always be requested cold. As for the sandwich the meat could be considered "thin" compared to other sandwich places. The trade off is that the price is right. For 5 something you get an 8 inch sub that works perfectly for lunch.
- Roast Beef is a winner here (#14 I think?). It's a great combination of flavors, and toasting it only enhances the experience.
- Avoid the #22. Agrusa's has great subs, but the Italian meats tasted funny.
- If you've had the subs at Smoke House Grills they taste very similar, only Agrusa's is a few bucks cheaper.
So why should you drive to Escondido for Chicken Soup? It's one of those food "experiences" that foodies like me drive long distance for. It's not just simple soup, it's something that you will remember and recommend to other people. Those are some of my favorite places.
At its core it's just Chicken, avocado, rice, a very flavorful chicken broth, a few wedges of lime, and those piping hot tortillas. Squeeze that lime in and dunk the tortilla and you get an instant uplifting of mood, body temperature ( if it's cold outside), and a feeling of home.
I think all of the non-soup items are better than average, I'm partial to the beaf taco.
Tip -Peterson's donuts is right in this area too ( 24 hours) so check that place out for some dessert. Highly rated on yelp.

Sandwich Emporium
Category: Sandwiches
Neighborhood: Escondido
A lot seems to have changed since my first review of the Escondido Sandwich Emporium. I still don't understand why more people don't go here. It's the same stuff as the Clairemont shop. I've now started to go there for breakfast. Good Breakfast burrito for the drive to work.
Positive changes.
- They seem to have corrected the issue with burning sandwich bread (see the posted pictures of the sandwiches when they first opened, all burnt)
- Soups can actually be requested in advance. You want tomato soup? just call the day before and they'll make it.
- They now have cookies and cupcakes.

First to Review
Sister store of the legendary Clairemont Mesa Sandwich Emporium.
This is a small sandwich shop off Auto Park Way down by the Sprinter station. Because this is new there are a few kinks to work out, but there is a lot of potential here. I'll review again in a few months. I do recommend trying this place.
Pros -
Run by the smarter, better looking Le Brother. ( okay bad joke)
Same great menu as the Clairemont shop
Cons -
As you can see from the pictures, there needs to be some tweaking when it comes to grilling the bread. Some come out burnt.
Located in the middle of Scripps Ranch this Mexican Eatery offers a wide range of fresh "California Style" dishes. The California Chicken Burrito was excellent. Just the right amount of fresh marinated chicken, cheese, fries and sauteed onions. The chicken was perfectly seasoned and there was little grease..
- They have a full "California Style" Menu. That basically means adding French Fries to your burrito/taco/torta.
- Good Salsa bar
- They do accept Credit Cards, but there is a polite message asking to pay cash if you can.
- Considering its location in a snooty community, the prices are very reasonable.
This is only a review on the "subs". Pizza may be great. The sandwiches are expensive, which wouldn't be a problem if the quality or taste justified it. Unfortunately, the bread, the sauce, and the processed chicken breast screamed 5 bucks, not 7+ bucks.
I would give Papa's a pass if it was just a Pizza place and they only sold subs as an afterthought. But when you have "Subs" in your business name, you have to be held accountable.
Soda is only available in cans.

Many years ago when they opened an Islands on Balboa Avenue it was THE place to go before going out with the guys on the weekend. It was always burgers and gooey cheese fries. Now, the franchise has expended across the west and my mature palate has taken me to new and different places. After a long hiatus, I've come back to Island.
Today I tried the "lite" turkey burger. I knew going into this that I probably wasn't going enjoy this lunch. It's usually not the turkey that gives me troubles, it's always the dry heavy wheat bread that's always paired up with Turkey burgers. To make up for high caloric condiments, the cooks rely heavily on mustard to give this burger taste . Rather than fries they give you steamed carrots and broccoli.
If you're on a reduced calorie diet this will work. If not just get a regular burger and eat half :)
- Chicken Breast Burgers might be a good middle ground if you're looking for something lighter.
- Shangri la iced tea
- Lunch Specials make it worth a visit.
